Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz

Dark Side of the MoonThe Wizard of Oz

Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz, commonly referred to as “Dark Side of the Rainbow”, is by far the most rumored and talked about Synchronization theory. Many websites have been devoted just to this synch. Pink Floyd band members themselves have been asked if they purposely synched the two together. (Which they deny.) We think this synchronization is most likely a coincidence, but there are many things that match up that make it seem like “too big of a coincidence”. You can make up your own mind about that!

Here you will find information on how to set up the synch yourself, what synch’s have been found and what to look for, the entire video already synched up, quotes regarding whether it might have been done on purpose, and the Dark Side of the Moon lyrics.

How to set it up:
Start the album right when the MGM lion roars for the third time. To make sure you have the album synched up properly, the credit for the producer Mervyn LeRoy appears right as the transition from “Speak to Me” to “Breathe” takes place. Dark Side of the Moon isn’t a long enough album to play through the entire movie, so be sure to put the album on repeat.

What to look for – The synch’s:

  • The lyric ‘Balanced on the biggest wave’ coincides with Dorothy’s balancing act on the fence
  • ‘On the Run’ starts as Dorothy falls off the fence
  • Chimes and Bells start ringing as the Wicked Witch appears riding her bicycle
  • During the ‘Time’ guitar solo, the fortune teller’s sign is shown with the words “Past Present and Future”
  • The tornado is shown in the background as the words ‘I’m am not frightened of dying’ are said
  • The drums start right as the wind really picks up and blows the trees from their roots
  • The singer calms down right as Dorothy is knocked unconsious by the window
  • ‘Great Gig in the Sky’ is still playing as the house flies in the tornado
  • Side 1 of the album (vinyl) is exactly as long as the black & white portion of the film
  • The cash register in Money is heard right as color is seen in Oz (money = color)
  • The ballerinas enter on ‘Us, us, us, us’
  • One ballerina seems to lip sync ‘ordinary men’
  • Three men enter on ‘Me, me, me’
  • One kid’s jerking motions are in sync with the music
  • ‘Forward he cried’ is sung as Dorothy looks turns to face forward
  • The Wicked Witch appears on ‘Black, black’
  • On ‘Blue, blue, blue,’ the camera switches to Dorothy (in her blue dress)
  • ‘And who knows which is which and who is who’ is sung right when the Wicked Witch of the West looks at the recently killed Wicked Witch of the East. Note the play on words “Which is Which” vs “Witch is Witch”
  • The Witch is up a the platform on ‘Up, up’ and then walks down on ‘Down, down, down’
  • As ‘And in the End’ is sung, the Wicked Witch of the East disappears
  • On ‘Out, out, out,’ the good Witch of the North leaves
  • ‘Brain Damage’ plays as the Scarecrow sings ‘If I Only Had a Brain’
  • Heartbeat heard at the end of the album is heard as Dorothy listens at the Tin Man’s chest
  • Watch the video – already synched up:
Here it is in all it’s glory. The entire album synched up to the movie. All 43 minutes of it.

So was it done on purpose?
Pink Floyd band members have repeatedly insisted that the reputed phenomenon is coincidence. In an interview for the 25th anniversary of the album, guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour denied that the album was intentionally written to be synchronized with Oz, saying “Some guy with too much time on his hands had this idea of combining Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon.”

On an MTV special about Pink Floyd in 2002, the band dismissed any relationship between the album and the movie, saying that there were no means of reproducing the film in the studio at the time they recorded the album.

In a 2003 interview with Rolling Stone, Dark Side of the Moon engineer Alan Parsons said of the supposed effect:

“It was an American radio guy who pointed it out to me. It’s such a non-starter, a complete load of eyewash. I tried it for the first time about two years ago. One of my fiancee’s kids had a copy of the video, and I thought I had see what it was all about. I was very disappointed. The only thing I noticed was that the line “balanced on the biggest wave” came up when Dorothy was kind of tightrope walking along a fence. One of the things any audio professional will tell you is that the scope for the drift between the video and the record is enormous; it could be anything up to twenty seconds by the time the record’s finished. And anyway, if you play any record with the sound turned down on the TV, you will find things that work.”

On the cover of the band’s 1995 live album Pulse, in the background, can be seen a bike with a basket on it and a girl with ruby slippers, both references to The Wizard of Oz. Some fans have construed this as the band subtly confirming the theory.

Dark Side of the Moon Lyrics:
    Speak to Me/Breathe:
    Breathe, breathe in the air
    don’t be afraid to care
    leave but don’t leave me
look around, choose your own ground
for long you live and high you fly
and smiles you’ll give and tears you’ll cry
and all your touch and all you see
is all your life will ever be
    Run rabbit run
dig that hole, forget the sun
and when at last the work is done
don’t sit down, it’s time to dig another one
for long you live and high you fly
but only if you ride the tide
and balanced on the biggest wave
you race towards an early grave

    Time:
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
    You missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
    Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
    The time is gone
    The song is over
Thought I’d something more to say

    Breathe Reprise:
    Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
when I come home cold and tired
it’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
    far away across the field
the tolling of the iron bell
calls the faithful to their knees
to hear the softly spoken magic spells

    Money:
    Money, get away
get a good job with more pay and you’re O.K.
    Money, it’s a gas
grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
new car, caviar, four star daydream
think I’ll buy me a football team
    Money, get back
I’m all right, Jack, keep your hands off my stack
    money, it’s a hit
don’t give me that do goody good bullshit
I’m in the hi-fidelity first class travelling set
and I think I need a Lear jet
    Money, it’s a crime
share it fairly but don’t take a slice of my pie
    money, so they say
is the root of all evil today
but if you ask for a rise it’s no surprise that they’re
    giving none away, away, away

    Us and Them:
    Us and them
and after all we’re only ordinary men
    me and you
God only knows it’s not what we would choose to do
forward he cried from the rear
    and the front rank died
and the General sat, and the lines on the map
    moved from side to side
    Black and blue
and who knows which is which and who is who
    up and down
and in the end it’s only round and round and round
haven’t you heard it’s a battle of words
    the poster bearer cried
listen, son, said the man with the gun
    there’s room for you inside
    Down and out
it can’t be helped but there’s a lot of it about
    with, without
and who’ll deny it’s what the fighting’s all about
out of the way, it’s a busy day
I’ve got things on my mind
for want of the price of tea and a slice
    the old man died

    Brain Damage:
The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
got to keep the loonies on the path
The lunatic is in the hall
the lunatics are in the hall
the paper holds their folded faces to the floor
and every day the paper boy brings more
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
and if there is no room upon the hill
and if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
you raise the blade, you make the change
you rearrange me ā€? till I’m sane
    you lock the door
    and throw away the key
there’s someone in my head but it’s not me
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
you shout and no one seems to hear
and if the band you’re in starts playing different tunes
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon

    Eclipse:
All that you touch and all that you see
all that you taste, all you feel
and all that you love and all that you hate
all you distrust, all you save
and all that you give and all that you deal
and all that you buy, beg, borrow or steal
and all you create and all you destroy
and all that you do and all that you say
and all that you eat and everyone you meet
and all that you slight and everyone you fight
and all that is now and all that is gone
and all that’s to come and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon
