Depends on which recording you listen to, (the clearest two to decipher the lyrics from are the 5th and 20th June 1971). The earlier of the two is sitting, (some suggest singing, but it is more widely considered to be sitting), but since the song was constantly undergoing change, switching from one set of lyrics to another, and occasionally even switching some back, was not uncommon.
