See, if you get the bootleg of the concert that was filmed for PULSE (October 20th, 1994) and the string of shows that were recorded for DSOT (August 1988, Nassau), you might change your opinion on those two albums. DSOT was tinkered with in the studio quite a bit, by David's own admission, but I rather like the rawness of the boots from the same shows. As for PULSE......that was one of the best damn shows they put on in the post-Roger era. That Comfortably Numb solo? Get out. The boot has the full unedited solo, where as the DVD/live CD has the edited version -- David had about a minute and a half cut out. Divine.

It may sound weird, but I've never thought Pink Floyd sounded very good live, except for The Wall and Live 8... Maybe some other exceptions. I've never heard Ummagumma's live part, and I'm honestly not really interested in it...

Pink Floyd were better live, at least IMO. Their studio albums were fan-freakin'-tastic, but their live shows were even better. I suppose you'd have to listen to a lot of their live shows over a good chunk of their performing career to come to that conclusion, but with certain tours, it's obvious. The Animals material sounded 10x better live than in the studio. The Dark Side of the Moon came alive in concert in a way that it couldn't on vinyl.
When they could improvise parts, especially David's guitars and Rick's keyboards/organ/synths, it was really magical. Especially SOYCD (VI - IX).

I'm curious, where do you get all your bootlegs? What is a bootleg by the way?

The Internet, specifically various blogs and message boards that have bootleg forums or sections for acquiring them. I don't buy boots, I think people who sell them are ridiculously stupid. A lot of them were found by going to http://pf-db.com and going under the tour I was interested in and finding the name of a boot that had a really good rating and then Google searching for it. You basically type in "Pink Floyd [name of bootleg] [year of bootleg]" minus the quotes and brackets and then hit search and see what comes up. I'm always looking for either shows I don't have, or dates I don't have. Shows in this case meaning the recordings themselves, the dates being the date the concert took place.
A bootleg, in this instance, is a recording of a live concert. I've got close to 200 PF boots now, spanning the years 1968-1994 and then their set at Live 8 in 2005. I also have close to 20 boots from David's two solo tours in 1984 and 2006. When David does his guest performance of Comfortably Numb during one of Roger's shows on his Wall tour next year, I will be definitely getting that one.
If a person was interesting in starting a collection of Pink Floyd boots and was looking for the best ones to get first, before delving deeper into their tours for other shows, I would recommend this list of 10 dates to start with:
May 9th, 1977
June 27th, 1977
April 26th, 1975
November 16th, 1974
February 13th, 1980
August 6th, 1980
June 17th, 1981 (last full PF concert w/Roger)
March 14th, 1973
September 22nd, 1972
April 29th, 1970
Those aren't in any particular order.

Dogs from Animal Instincts is a particular favorite of mine. That extra guitar solo near the end is incredible.

Heh, that's weird. I thought the improvisation was where they're lacking. David's solos are certainly not improvised, as far as I've heard, so I'm not sure where this comes from...

It comes from listening to close to 200 bootlegs of them in concert, and then comparing how and what they played to what it sounded like on the album. Some songs they played straight, many others they didn't. Take Comfortably Numb for example. The only solo David played straight to the record was the 1st solo. The 2nd one he'd start the same and end the same, but then you'd have 4 to 4 1/2 minutes that was different from night to night.
Also, I've been listening to SOYCD (VI - IX) from the WYWH tour, and the section where David and Rick are bouncing off each other, much like they did on Echoes, sounded much more spontaneous and different than what they recorded on the album.

I'm not that much into boots, mainly because I get disturbed by the audience.
But there's a huge difference between the album AMLOR and the way those songs were played live on DSOT. The album really comes to life.
Same with On an Island, the live renditions are great and the old songs on both DVDs are very different.
@Arno, you should definately listen to Ummagumma live. Best versions of those songs IMO.
