i agree with carefulwiththataxeEugene. still i recommend buying Atom Heart Mother or even Relics first. to be honest, i luv em all and i think they all showcase pf's originality. however, imo, Ummagumma is more experimental. don't get me wrong it's a brilliant album but i think u should get the other ones first.

Yeah, Several Species is great.
I think the reason the band doesn't like Atom Heart Mother is that they regard it as a failed experiment; they don't like much from this period between Syd's departure and Dark Side of the Moon. They see those albums as kind of stepping stones that ultimately led to Dark Side. Roger has been quoted as saying about Atom Heart Mother and Meddle: "I like Atom Heart Mother [Suite] and Echoes, but we made a right mess of the other sides." Dave has said that they should have spent more time on it than they did...they were really consciously trying to do something different, and he thinks they failed. I disagree, but there you have their feelings in a nutshell.

I wasn't a PF fan when I was dragged along to the Rainbow Theatre on February 20 1972 when I was a young teenager. But I was an instant convert, and next day I went out & bought Ummagumma.
Basically, if you're a bit of a space cadet (and no, you don't have to take drugs to be one), then get Ummagumma. If you're one of the many who has nothing even vaguely hippie-ish about you--if you're more gold curb chains than silver mystical symbols, then Dark Side of course. That said, I fail to see how anyone cannot appreciate Dark Side, which is deeply moving and not too demanding.
