:Oo:
Exactly. ???
Quote:And I'm not saying it's entirely wrong for the band members to push the fact they used to be in Pink Floyd on the covers of their solo albums. They do have every right to, of course. But it does still seem to me to be a bit of a copout to maximise profits. And my word, is it ever irritating to see people fall for it. I was in HMV the other day near the On An Island display area. I overheard the conversation held between two of the guys in front of it. The one said, "Hey, this is the new Pink Floyd album!" and the other said "Oh, let's get it," then promptly marched off to the till with it. And I felt like tearing my hair out right there and screaming to tell them that On An Island is a David Gilmour album, not a Pink Floyd album. I didn't, of course, as that would have been terribly rude. Still, it's that gullible nature of people out there that really gets to me. That people could buy a David Gilmour album thinking that they're buying a Pink Floyd album. And all because of that little sticker...

No, it's not because of a little sticker, it's because of extreme stupidity and/or poor reading skills. If I knew little about Floyd and stumbled on Roger's website, I would not conclude that the "Creative Genius of Pink Floyd" label meant that Roger Waters WAS Pink Floyd, or that I was looking at a PF website, and I would not come to the same conclusion if I saw the same sticker on one of his solo albums. After all, if it was meant to be a PF record, it would just say "Pink Floyd" on it, not "David Gilmour," "Roger Waters," etc. Anyone who can't figure that out is beyond help. You have to laugh at people like that, instead of getting annoyed about it.

Anyway, fortunately, I don't think that there are enough people who are that dimwitted to make much of a difference in record sales at all. When the packaging comes off the album, then the world "Pink Floyd" will not exist anywhere on it, and presumably the guy will figure it out sooner or later and feel ripped-off. Is that David's fault for having a sticker proclaiming something perfectly true on it (being the guitarist and dominant vocalist on most of the PF albums he appeared on)? Or is it the buyer's fault for having the intelligence of a sackful of hammers? I vote for the latter.

I also vote for Roger having a sticker saying "The creative genius of Pink Floyd" on his next solo album, and I'll shed no tears for anyone stupid enough to mistake it for an actual PF record, nor blame Roger for associating himself with a band he made a huge contribution to.

Different strokes.

Well said. And, may I add, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander." Unless my memory is really messed up, I distinctlly remember Roger billing himself as "the lead singer of Pink Floyd" in the 80's... at any rate, his solo career certainly does lack the recognition is deserves. but it certainly hasn't been because Roger has pretended that he wasn't an essential member of one of the most influential bands of all time... becausee, truth be told, he hasn't exactly been shy about using the PF time to promote his own solo career. More power to him... and to Dave and Rick as well, I say.

That's not Roger! Roger was the drummer on Division Bell.

Mabewa, the wonderful thing about opinions is that we're allowed to have different ones. :) There's no need to be condescending. It's obvious that we're not going to agree, so why not drop it?
I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to be condescending. My bad.

I think that your opinion (Pink Floyd members shouldn't promote themselves as members of PF) is perfectly valid. The only thing I really disagree with is the statement that Roger has avoided billing himself as things like "the creative genius of PF" or "the lead singer of PF." After we started this discussion, I remembered Roger billing himself as "the lead singer of Pink Floyd" in the 80's, and I remember some of my friends assuming that Roger did all of the singing on albums like Wish You were Here," "Dark Side of the Moon," etc, and having to explain to them otherwise. So, I understand why you'd be annoyed at hearing people assume that a Dave solo album was a Floyd album. I just think that... there is definitely more than one side to this story.

Also, I guess that I always get sad when it seems that PF members always have to be compared to each other... I really want to support ALL of them. I think that Roger's lack of solo success is really wrong, and I am looking at the success of On an Island as a hopeful sign for Roger's next album.
"Perfect Sense" live during the ITF tour was one of the best live songs I've ever heard.....in my opinion. I was not too familiar with Waters' solo stuff prior to seeing him during that tour.
