Was it ever uncovered who wrote that? Sorry if this has already been posted before...
to my knowledge the author is still unknown, sorry :(
It's an anonymous fake.

I thought that was unmistakably a Syd song (at least thats what it said on a bootleg). Why is it thought to be a fake?

Among the clues that the song is a fake:
The title itself is unlikely: Syd would probably not have use the firstname "Stanley" which sounds more american than English. The word "Simpleton" seems also far for Syd's vocabulary field.
Syd's unreleased track listing is well known for years. It is rather impossible that totally a new title appears out of the blue. For example, the unreleased "Bob Dylan Blues" has not been published yet, but its existence has been common knoledge for more than 20 years.

This song defeanitely sounds like an unreleased Syd Barrett song from the Pink Floyd period, but it is most likely a quite talented fake. The song has circulated as an mp3 file on the web. Original source unknown.

Stanley the simpleton
He's not to blame
Never be a genius
And it's quite a shame
Stanley the simpleton
Simpleton ways
Simpleton mind and
Simpleton brain

just some reading material about the tune, although alot of people still think it is a previously unreleased (and recently found) Syd song...
Interesting! Thanks for the info. I'll add this to one of the many things I've learned on this board. :D
I'm sure there would be documentation somewhere about this song if Syd really did record it. I mean, we knew about quite a few other unreleased songs before they were leaked onto the internet. I don't see what makes this one any different.
I've heard it. Whoever did the voice really ought to be donating his talents to a Floyd cover band instead of doing stuff like this!

It probably is a fake, I guess, but I have 2 points to raise. Stanley could equally be an English or American name. Bob Dylan Blues the song has been published since c. 2000 when it was released on Wouldn't You Miss Me (The Best of Syd Barrett). It's true that it was known about before that official release. Incidentally, Dylan is thought to be the most bootlegged artist of all time, so it's not surprising a song about him was a popular favourite with the bootleggers for 20 years before the record company spoiled their fun and made it official.
good points simps...wonder if we'll ever know, btw I've read that David has some unreleased Syd material...hmmmm, what ya think?
