I love Syd but I also love what the band did afterwards, what strikes me about his "solo" stuff is the emotion he evokes from such simple lyrics and melodies, it seems that in the later works the band took alot more effort to portray thoughts, as did like everyone else, but Syd just seemed to have a knack for deep impression with very little effort
Syd acrried on doing what he was good at. The band moved on and experimented for a number of years. Whether Syd's music would have been quite so well received now is as much up for debate as whether any of the remaining floyd's work would. I personally think that syd would have stood less of a chance today, but that's mainly because he captured a mood, a moment in time and immortalised it. If Nirvana had been playing what they did in the 60's, they would have almost certainly been ignored, criticised and faded away, but they also captured a moment in time, a feeling that the youth had and turned it into something that will be forever remembered as brilliant.

i think syd's music can also get quite doomy aswell but for the most part its quite uplifting and his solo lyrics blow all the other members out of the water.

Yeah, Syd is an excellent songwriter. Many of his words are so simple, yet mean so much.
You said it. :)
I always wonder what Syd Barrett would have done if PF hadnt been in the studio with him. Sometimes it seems like they kept him down and sometimes it seems they tried to help him. I dont know. But Syd's music is just so crazy... just try and play it with a band .. it is insane.
That is why when I do our local Syd Tribute it is me and a Guitarist.
We do at least one Syd song per set at or shows.. basic rule.
MY 8 year old knows the lyrics to LOVE YOU and it is scary how good she does it...lol.

I like both. Syd has a unique voice none like anyone else in the music business. But he was awesome.

I like every lp/cd of Syd-Floyd. I even like his solo lps. There is a very slight difference between the Syd-Floyd and than everything that followed after.
But it's hard to determine what the Floyd would of sounded like if Syd had stayed. We can only speculate here because as each lp was being made the social surroundings of Floyd were changing. Also as each lp was being created each member of the Floyd were maturing in age. We can only dream about it. My big picture is if Syd stayed in the band we would of had two powerful songwriters (Syd & Roger). Can you imagine what the Wall would of been like if Syd and Roger merged together as a team? One can only imagine how crazier that lp would of turned out......: )

i agree 100%
i hear syd references in every album i've heard so far.
and i hear things that i could almost thing were directed to the floyd in syd's work too.
I only listen to Syd's Floyd & solo stuff & when I DO listen to PF it's "More","Obscured","Ummagumma" &"Echoes. "Saucerful"as well. The rest is overkilled on the radio, especially DSOTM,WYWH & The Wall. Same songs, same albums.....I live in Chicago and cannot TELL you the last time I heard Syd on the radio; maybe late '80's, early 90's. Quite sad & typical of how good radio is now!!!(Put in your sarcasm here!!) All mainstream music is bad, like all "Middle men" per Syd in '67.
