I'm surprised no one has posted here yet today. So who participated in Dyolf's memorial event?

While we eagerly await Roger Waters' Live Earth performance, let's not forget to take a moment to remember Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett and celebrate his life and work. I wonder if Roger will be giving any special comments about this day.

Shine on you crazy diamond!

- monkey.choker - 07-07-2007 12:48 PM

God bless you Syd.

Shine On, dude, Shine On.

- Never Fear 33 Is Here - 07-07-2007 06:33 PM

R.I.P. Syd. I participated yesterday as it was the 7th here yesterday. A sad day, but one to celebrate his life in.

Next year Jonathon promises to have it set up so that it will be linked around the world. rocker

I know what you mean J, but honestly speaking, I'm not...in much of the world he has attained what he sought...solitude

- Dyolf - 07-08-2007 03:43 AM

Well, I took part :;): I sat silently for 2 minutes and played the whole of Shine On....

The clock is ticking for 7/7/08, I still need to make some changes to the page for the 2008 event, but I have reset the clock.

- BOOOSH - 07-08-2007 05:47 AM

I took part as well. Listening to the whole of Shine On was an awesome idea.

Though it was listening to Dark Globe that made me really sad :(

RIP Syd. Shine On rocker

I've always like to think that this lyric is about syd
I've got a little black book with my poems in.
Got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb in.
When I'm a good dog, they sometimes throw me a bone in.

I got elastic bands keepin my shoes on.
Got those swollen hand blues.
Got thirteen channels of shit on the T.V. to choose from.
I've got electric light.
And I've got second sight.
And amazing powers of observation.
And that is how I know
When I try to get through
On the telephone to you
There'll be nobody home.

I've got the obligatory Hendrix perm.
And the inevitable pinhole burns
All down the front of my favorite satin shirt.
I've got nicotine stains on my fingers.
I've got a silver spoon on a chain.
I've got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains.

shine on.....

R.I.P. Syd

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - shockwave6668 - 07-07-2010 09:46 PM

Syd..which was the inspiration for Nobody's Home!

Floyd's music and albums are basically the band's history..which makes it so much more compelling! The band itself was never about commercial status. It was about them making music that THEY think was good, with a little bit of influence from their producers and record companies. For instance, many people think Piper was a gem. It was ok IMO. But that influence led to the heyday of the band.

So yeah, Syd was not given enough credit for what he did in Floyd as he was in the goth movement. I know RObert Smith was inspired by him, as I think in some ways Burton. Shame LSD and the early drugs movement definitely caught up with Syd too early!

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - Lady Floydian - 07-09-2010 08:20 PM

I think Syd gets a ton of credit for what he brought to the band and what he later inspired in them through their subsequent works. If there's anyone in the band who has gotten the shaft when it comes to credit, it's Rick. Shame that it took his death for fans to understand just how important he was to the group.

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - shockwave6668 - 07-09-2010 08:27 PM

Yeah. I was listening to the soundtrack to La Carrera Panamericana today and could definitely see Wright's contributions! Shame that album isn't released as a soundtrack. The last few tracks were just simply amazing!!

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - blue_ember - 02-12-2011 07:45 PM

Is the memorial day annual?

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - itsagas - 08-13-2011 03:59 PM

Rest in peace, Mr. Barrett. I hope so much that you were at peace while still alive. You were a true, one-in-a-million piper. I would have followed you anywhere, but alas, I was only eleven. I like to picture you having quite a time in heaven. You are riding a bike "with a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good". You are surrounded by clouds and sunlight. Your eyes are sparklely bright, your smile is mischeivious. There are thousands behind you, so happy to be near. When I die, I'lll be looking for that light and I will happily join the crowd.

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - blue_ember - 08-13-2011 04:58 PM

This is coincidental because I just finished reading Inside Out by Nick Mason a few hours ago and at the end of the chonology it says '2006 - death of Syd Barrett' and I got sad :(

That is a coincidence. It is sad. Sad Do you know if it is true that the title for Shine On was intended to be as this: Shine on You Crazy Diamond..?

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - Joe - 08-13-2011 05:45 PM

I don't think so, but it's still nice to think so Smile

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - itsagas - 08-13-2011 06:36 PM

Thanks! You're right, it is nice to think it anyway.

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - blue_ember - 08-13-2011 07:09 PM

haha i never noticed that. in the novel, when he mentions Syds drop in visit to Abbey Road studios, he says that 'as the myth goes, that was the day of recording for shine on' It wasnt for certain that thats what they were recorded but somewhat like your S-Y-D in the title thing, its nice to think so (isnt it?)

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - itsagas - 08-13-2011 07:45 PM

What an emotional day that must have been for the band. I also like to think they were recording Shine On at the time. I can't imagine the depth of emotion they all must have felt. That has to be the most poignant story in rock history.

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - blue_ember - 08-14-2011 06:54 PM

ya. If a band were to be feeling such intensity when they were recording, (hopefully) it would have been expressed in their playing and been apparent on the final mix of the songs. Well as emotional as the album wish you were here is, even if it wasn't the song Shine On, it could still have been wish you were here (which is also about Syd)

RE: Syd Barrett Memorial Day - itsagas - 08-14-2011 07:58 PM

Oh certainly, in fact I've read more often that it was Wish You Were Here. I guess the thought of it being that song is just too sad. He was there, but he wasn't. David Gilmour said in an interview (I'm sorry I can't remember at this time which one) that none of them were there, not like they were when they were recording Dark Side, and that he they wished they had been. I can feel the emotion in both songs, that and love. A lot of folks have found this odd, but I feel Shine On and Wish You Were Here are the band's greatest love songs. Women come and go, but that was their mate.
