Because people like you have google on your side :D

- Myriad Small Creature - 03-11-2004 10:53 PM

Syd walked in when they were recording Shine On to announce that it was time for Pink Floyd to reunite. Read Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Oddysey by Nicholas Schaffner, it's really interesting. My attention span's only long enough to zip through a comic book, and I was so hooked I read it in a couple of days.

- sydbarrett15 - 03-13-2004 10:54 AM

Excuse me? I read it too quick... If you continue to fill this thread with hate I will be forced to do absolutely nothing about it!

- Ignis Fatuus - 03-14-2004 02:19 PM

Oh and one more thing: I was more dead on than you'd let yourself believe. OBVIOUSLY SOYCD is on WYWH... Therefore, you're a meanie beanie baby.

Sorry. I just felt your questions were too easy. I apologize if I offended you in any way.

- ILOVEPF - 03-16-2004 03:16 PM

im saying who ever made this thread had good intentions and it is a nice idea.

but people are acting catty and ruining the fun of it by stewing over stupid details for post after post and no one cares to watch one quarrel between two members unfold. its boring and pointless.

so to sum up, good thread idea, bad thread in the end.

like is said on another one about how people on this board used to be nice. but now it turns into a war of words. it didnt use to be like that. someone could come on here and call the song money "dollar and cents" in a thread they started, and someone would correct them, move on, and answer thier question. now that isnt the case. someone would freak out on them. and they would retort with something about how they made a typo and that everyone should jump up their a$$.

- Ignis Fatuus - 03-17-2004 12:10 AM

In what song does Syd describe what he's wearing?

- psychadelicMINDenhancer - 03-17-2004 01:50 AM

"Stoned Alone", also an interesting song from the time period...
The answer to your ? Ignis is Vegetable Man ...What a wonderful experience for the ears 'tis a pity it never ended up on a released album....for financial purposes I mean...nice
to listen to now and again ***thinking**** still drawing a

its not a direct quote. its an analogy.

but i wont complain anymore. i have put my 12 cents in, so i will let things be. i no longer feel compelled to cry about issues that dont need crying over. i had a thought. but its glimmer is gone, and its not well recieved.

moving on.

a question in 3 parts:
1 which is the song played at the beginning of the wall live (is there anybody out there?)before in the flesh ?
2 whose is that song?
3why is it there?

- Wourm - 03-18-2004 05:05 PM

i dont know the name but the singer is Vera Lynn "i think i spelled the last name right" and i dont know exactly why its there but i have to take a stab at it, because of the song "Vera" and i think waters lost his dad in WWII and she sang to the troops, thats my stab so im probably wrong but meh oh well

- Kimbers Sheep - 03-18-2004 09:30 PM

TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond, correct, Paintbox Cool

- TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond - 03-19-2004 08:39 AM

the song is 'we'll meet again' of vera lynn.
you can hear 'we'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when, but i know we'll meet again some sunny day'.
this song was sung by lot of soldiers during the second WW, because they hoped to return home alive.

- wowser - 03-19-2004 08:44 AM

my question:
Why do some kids sing "Ring a Ring a Roses" during Take It Back (I know the song its meaning, i just wondered why that's in there"

- TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond - 03-19-2004 08:58 AM

Take it back speaks about nature: if man abuses of it, nature can have its revenge.
ring-a-ring-a-roses is said to be referred to an europe plague in 1600...nature had had its revenge.....!!

- TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond - 03-19-2004 09:11 AM

I don't think that...maybe david thinks so, maybe not...

while we're on WYWH, what was the theme for that album ???

- wowser - 03-21-2004 02:43 PM

i dunno if there always is a theme for PF albums (like the divison bell's crappy ' separation' theme) Maybe WYWH is about loss, though, but obviously not all the tracks fit this. THERE IS NO OVERALL THEME, MAN!!!!

- Wourm - 03-21-2004 02:51 PM

wowser Wrote:THERE IS NO OVERALL THEME, MAN!!!!
according to storm the overall theme is absence, maybe he meant the pictures like the diver, there is no splash when he is in the water, the red and white sash thingys, there is nobady wearing them, the man with no face, the man swimming in the ocean that isnt there, the empty handshake of a man on fire, he might of meant the pictures and not the album but the song wish you were here, SOYCD, those tie in with the supposed them but i dunno

Wasn't it from a some kind of book? I can't remember the title, though. I would cheat but you don't see the contestants of Jeopardy reaching for their cell phones everytime they're stumped.

here's the first verse that was dropped...is this what you mean...?

Planets singing face to face
Bound to the air of life, how sweet!
If purposely we might embrace
The perfect union deep in space

Ever might this once relent
And give us leave to shine as one
Our two lights singing better
Than one light can

And in that longing to be one
The parting suns shine as one
I'll see you've got to travel on
And on and on, around the sun

In the early 1960's there was a small serial killing spree in the area of London near the river Thames. After three or four
murders, a suspect was caught. That suspect's name was Eugene Craft. He was tried and found guilty. Hence, "Careful" might be a reference to that incident.

- Kimbers Sheep - 10-26-2004 10:15 PM

awesome job Steve, totally correct.....
next question.... what songs were planned as Pink Floyd's third single to be released on 45?

- Lumiere - 10-27-2004 03:33 AM

I'm guessing

Vegetable Man/Scream Thy Last Scream

- Steve Hill - 10-28-2004 11:07 AM

Ditto that and also add Jugband Blues.

- Kimbers Sheep - 10-28-2004 12:35 PM

Right, okay, i seem to remember reading something about Millionaire or Sunshine for the third single too. Am I close?

- Kimbers Sheep - 10-29-2004 06:47 PM

you guys have all the right songs , now what were the two to be released, remember back then a single was a 45, with A side and B side...so two songs...

- Steve Hill - 10-31-2004 11:13 AM

Assuming you mean what was planned by the record company for release rather than recorded and immediately dismissed, was it Jugband Blues and Millionaire?

- Steve Hill - 10-31-2004 11:35 AM

Kimbers Sheep Wrote:you guys have all the right songs , now what were the two to be released, remember back then a single was a 45, with A side and B side...so two songs...
I do know what 45 refers to, 45's are 7" singles and obviously have both an A and B side to them. I was stating random songs hoping you would just except it as an answer rather than a more specific answer.

- Kimbers Sheep - 10-31-2004 12:28 PM

now Steve..of course I want the exact two songs, and sorry if I offended you, wasn't my intent, most poeple here probably don't remember 45's at all, so I was simply stating fact that there were two songs, A & B

I wasn't offended in any way and you'll have to try harder in future to do so. :;):

Am I close with Jugband Blues/Millionaire or am I going to have to try another combination.

- Kimbers Sheep - 10-31-2004 07:40 PM

I'll go to the original suggestion by Lumiere and say Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream.

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-03-2004 08:07 PM

half right

- Steve Hill - 11-04-2004 12:38 PM

Right, since my orignal guess of Jugband Blues and Millionaire was close and this one of Vegetable Man/Scream Thy Last Scream was half right, I will attempt Jugband Blues/Scream Thy Last Scream this time.

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-05-2004 11:06 AM

hehehehe, also half right

- Steve Hill - 11-05-2004 02:38 PM

So it must surely be Scream thy last scream/Millionaire. If it isn't, i'll have to see what other combinations are left. glare

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-05-2004 10:50 PM

CONGRATS!!

- Steve Hill - 11-11-2004 08:35 AM

At last, another, another. I am determined to keep this game going even if remains just myself and kimbers involved.

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-11-2004 11:23 AM

OK, what song features a soundbite from "On the Waterfront" and "Casablanca"?

- forksinatoaster - 11-11-2004 09:37 PM

something from the wall i'm guessing

'In The Flesh?' ?

Yet Another Movie? Was about to say Marooned, but then I seemed to remember the answer, or at least I think it is the answer.

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-21-2004 01:26 PM

YOU ARE CORRECT SIR :)

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-24-2004 10:35 PM

ok, a toughie...when was the first time Quadrophonic Sound Equipment was used?

- Interstellar_Overdrive - 11-25-2004 12:47 PM

What are you asking for? Year? Album? ???

- Steve Hill - 11-25-2004 01:52 PM

Well the first floyd album to be released in the format was Atom Heat Mother, but it was around before then and was used by the band too, I say 1968 as a guess.

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-26-2004 07:06 PM

no and what I am looking for is the eact date and/or concert when they first used it

- Steve Hill - 11-27-2004 02:26 PM

Right, I need to look around for the answer to this one. I'll see what I can find.

- Steve Hill - 11-28-2004 09:06 AM

Okay so I cheated a bit, google took all of 5 seconds to give me the answer though. Wikipedia states it was:

# May 12 1967 - Pink Floyd stages the first ever rock concert with quadraphonic sound at Queen Elizabeth Hall, England

So I assume this is correct my good sir.

- Kimbers Sheep - 11-28-2004 07:24 PM

hehehehe, correct for extra credit...what was the song list....lol...for everyone else....what was the song Hollywood recorded for?

- Steve Hill - 12-01-2004 12:08 PM

Okay, so I cheated again, it was:
1) Tape Dawn
2) Matilda Mother
3) Flaming
4) Scarecrow
5) Jugband Blues
6) Games for May
7) Bike
8) Arnold Layne
9) Candy And a Currant Bun
10) Pow R Toc H
11) Interstellar Overdrive
12) Tape Bubbles
13) Tape Ending
14) Encore: Lucifer Sam

I'll leave the other question for now in hope that someone else enters what is fast becoming the Steve and Kimbers show.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-01-2004 11:20 PM

true...but at least we have fun huh Steve...c'mon..anyone else feel brave?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-06-2004 04:34 PM

Here's a question: what is the only song in the Roger Waters era accredited to just David Gilmour and Rick Wright?

- Steve Hill - 12-07-2004 01:49 AM

Mudmen from Obscured By Clouds. Unless of course you have a different definition of the waters era, lots of gilmour, wright, even one gilmour/wright/mason credit, but can't recall any other with just rick and Dave.

- Steve Hill - 12-07-2004 01:50 AM

Here's one now we have some more willing to participate:

What was the last studio recording to feature Mason vocals?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-07-2004 07:43 AM

It wouldn't be "One of These Days," would it? That's the only one I can think of where he sang...

- Steve Hill - 12-07-2004 10:11 AM

Could well be, but I am thinking of a later track where he appeared, whether it could be classed as vocals though is up for debate I guess. I say yes as it was something worked into the track.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-08-2004 09:17 AM

I give up...what are you thinking of?

- Steve Hill - 12-08-2004 11:03 AM

Bit of a con question I must admit but I believe it was Learning To Fly. The discussion between the pilot and the air traffic controller is actually between Dave and Nick.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-08-2004 01:32 PM

Didn't know...

How's this: What is (are) the only track(s) from The Dark Side of the Moon that have never been performed by either Waters or Gilmour during their solo tours?

- Steve Hill - 12-08-2004 03:40 PM

Well, they have all been performed by Dave Floyd, but just going by my gut instinct for the solo tours, I have to say Speak To Me, On The Run and Great Gig In The Sky.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-08-2004 04:25 PM

Dave Floyd...I like that.

Speak to Me is one, but the other one is in fact Any Colour You Like.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-09-2004 12:36 AM

very interesting stuff there carefulwiththataxeEugene....ok, a new one, I hope anyhow, so many not rel sure what I have asked and what I haven't, lol...so...what song was first played on July 26, 1967 at the UFO Club as a protest against their forced conformity to "modern radio singles"

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-09-2004 07:09 AM

I was going to say "Interstellar Overdrive," but then I had a gut feeling that it just might be...

"Scream Thy Last Scream"?

Granted I've never heard it but from all accounts it doesn't sound like single material...

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-09-2004 12:04 PM

man. this thread has entertained me all day at work. and I thought pink floyd was one of those bands I knew a bit about. you guys are insane.

so for the rest of us...

during the 'animals' tour, roger would randomly shout a number occasionally during shows. what did the numbers correspond to?

what is the effect unit dave uses to get the underwater sound in the opening of 'breathe'?

a.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-09-2004 02:25 PM

Can I answer one?

According to Nick Mason, Roger shouted the numbers during "Pigs" to identify the individual bootleg recordings of the concerts.

InTheFlesh2 CORRECT

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-09-2004 02:44 PM

Here's a freebie:

Previous to Pink Floyd, what band released an album called The Dark Side of the Moon?
Bonus: Before deciding to call their album DSOTM anyway, what was the alternate title considered by the Floyd?

And a slightly harder one:

The line in Time, "hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way," was inspired by/partially copied from what line in what novel by what famous 19th-century author?

- Interstellar_Overdrive - 12-09-2004 03:09 PM

What was the name of the band that Syd Barrett and David Gilmour played together in before the formation of Pink Floyd?

I believe that would be Chris Ian and the Newcomers. I think the other two in the band were Chris Ian (obviously) and Ken Waterson.

Chapter 24 of the book "I Ching" or Book of changes and many of the lines are directly taken from the chapter.

Can I request that someone only posts a new question when the previous one has been answered. It's nice to see this topic finally getting some interest again, but even if you don't know the answer to the current question, have a go and we can still keep it going without having four different questions left unanswered at any time.

Who is the only member of Pink Floyd to play on every one of their albums?

And another one, slightly harder:

What is the only song on The Wall to feature a Waters/Wright duet?

- InTheFlesh2 - 12-10-2004 08:50 PM

The answer to your first question is Nick Mason.

- InTheFlesh2 - 12-10-2004 09:09 PM

The answer to your second question is Goodbye Cruel World.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-10-2004 11:27 PM

CORRECT

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-11-2004 11:09 PM

ok, here's an interesting on, one member of PF appeared on a very popular late night TV show here in the US...who was it and what was the show?

- Steve Hill - 12-12-2004 01:09 AM

Music from the body was actually as good as I was expecting it to be, not great but considering how it could have been, I was pleasantly surprised.

Answer to your question, even though I don't live in the US and don't have a clue to the real answer, I guess David Gilmour and the show was The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Unless it was more recent and then it could have been Nick, but take my first answer only please.

Assuming the answer to that question was right...

I'm feeling generous, so here's a couple of give-aways.

What are the only two albums in music history to have sold more copies than "The Wall"?

What is the only Floyd album to reach #1 on both sides of the Atlantic? (US and UK, just to avoid confusion.)

#2 is Atom Heart Mother.

#1 is wrong for a start, there are about 40 albums above The Wall in worldwide sales according to RIAA, when you consider each sale as singular and not each disc, (only now counts as double album eligible for each disc when over 100 minutes I believe). But if you are only considering US sales and want to count each disc seperately as was done previously, it's Eagles' Greatest Hits and Michael Jackson's Thriller. Those figures are also out of date though and I did post the top 100 list a few months back.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-12-2004 02:00 PM

It is not Atom Heart Mother. That only got to #55 in the US.

- Steve Hill - 12-12-2004 02:01 PM

Just to clear it up as well, The Wall has sold about 21 million copies, (using single album rather than disc figures), worldwide to date and DSOTM has sold over 35 million.

The Division Bell.

Right, that has confused me now, I though I had them all sorted out in my head. The highest one pre-darkside in the US though must have been Obscured By Clouds because I know that even up to Meddle there were still doubts stateside that any album would match AHM. It wasn't by much though.

You are correct sir, Obscured by Clouds peaked in the US at #46, the first Floyd album to crack the top fifty.

Conversely: What are the ONLY two Pink Floyd albums (excluding live albums) to fail to reach the top 10 in the UK?

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-15-2004 12:15 AM

a collection of great dance songs or zabriskie point(if that counts)

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-15-2004 01:22 PM

It is indeed A Collection of Great Dance Songs, without a doubt the most un-Floydian album title they ever came up with.

- Steve Hill - 12-15-2004 01:38 PM

It was not thought up by the band, but the record company, not surprisingly.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-15-2004 02:34 PM

It gave me an idea:

What is (are) the only album cover(s) not designed by Storm Thorgerson?

- Steve Hill - 12-15-2004 02:38 PM

Vic Singh, (sp?) did Piper, Gerald Scarfe did the wall, i think roger did the final cut himself effectively, but there is also works, zabriskie point and a few other lesser releases that Storm didn't oversee.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-15-2004 04:19 PM

That sums it up pretty well.

You've all heard of the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game, right? You know, "this person was in this film with this person, who was in this other film with this person, who was..." etc., etc.

Well, who can make the following link, using movies, in the fewest steps:

David Gilmour to Bruce Willis.

There ya go...a little different trivia question than we're used to.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-15-2004 11:47 PM

Great question Eugene, just too tough for me, lol, OK, Which Pink Floyd album can be seen in a Stanley Kubrick movie?

I can never remember this exactly, but since Kubrick wanted to use Atom Heart Mother in the film, I guess it was that. I have seen the film recently and read about this numerous times, but the answer always seems to escape me. Once the answer has been posted here though, I guarantee you I will be able to remember it then, it's always the way with me, I learn from mistakes.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 07:58 AM

Yeah, it was Atom Heart Mother, seen in the record store in the film "A Clockwork Orange" (which was indeed the one in which he wanted to use the album).

As a side note, you can also see Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush," the Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour," and Kubrick's soundtrack to "2001: A Space Odyssey." It was a real record store and those albums just happened to be on display, although Kubrick seemed to make sure that we all saw "2001" displayed prominently...

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-19-2004 11:26 AM

CORRECT, and good point Eugene, he certainly wanted us to see 2001, lol

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 01:38 PM

How many Floyd albums feature an image of the band on the cover, and which are they?

- InTheFlesh2 - 12-19-2004 01:42 PM

Without really thinking about it, there are 2, Piper and Ummagumma

- Steve Hill - 12-19-2004 01:43 PM

Including the lesser releases:

Piper
Saucerful
Ummagumma
Masters of Rock

- InTheFlesh2 - 12-19-2004 01:52 PM

Damn't I forgot Saucerful

- Steve Hill - 12-19-2004 01:53 PM

Sorry, I forgot the football team picture is also on the front of A Nice Pair, so that is included in that list too.

Edited By Steve Hill on 1103493216

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 02:53 PM

All right so far, but you're forgetting a couple...

- Steve Hill - 12-19-2004 03:02 PM

Like what, I really can't think of any more except maybe my copy of "Pink Floyd and Friends - Interstellar Overdrive" and the such.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 03:06 PM

There's "The Early Singles" and "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd."

- Steve Hill - 12-19-2004 03:15 PM

But that's only their life masks on Echoes and Early singles wasn't a major release, so I ignored both of them, (even if I did forget about early singles).

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 03:16 PM

Not true...on Echoes there is a picture of them on the left side, and in the background (third room back), Piper hangs on the wall.

- Steve Hill - 12-19-2004 03:22 PM

Sneaky, saying that reminded me of the picture you talk about, it was the aviator one that is in saucerful cd booklet and inside a nice pair. Looking at the cover, (got up just after the last sentence to check the cover), I now also see the life masks are on the other side anyway. :(

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 05:49 PM

This question will require a knowledge of Pink Floyd that borders on esoterica:

Which two people delivered the lines "There is no dark side of the moon really...matter of fact it's all dark" and "I don't know, I was really drunk at the time," respectively, on Dark Side of the Moon, and who were they (i.e., what did they do)?

- Steph - 12-19-2004 06:18 PM

Thats easy.......Irish doorman Gerry from Abbey Road Studios and guitar player Henry McCullough of Wings....

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-19-2004 07:05 PM

Huh...okay, not as difficult as I thought...I could always go back to the movie links, but you wouldn't want THAT, would you?

Well, I'll let someone else ask a question now while I bask in the triumph of my DSOTM query...

Edited By carefulwiththataxeEugene on 1103512061

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-20-2004 12:35 AM

OK, some good ones...I'll throw one out...what is The Elfin Oak?

- Steph - 12-20-2004 09:14 AM

Don't know that one....

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-20-2004 10:06 AM

I think it was Ivor Innes who carved it, making an oak tree look as though gnomes, elves, etc. lived in it. It's in Kensington Gardens, right?

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-20-2004 11:03 AM

All of that is true, but let me rephrase...what is it (answered) and what is it's relation to Floyd?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-20-2004 11:29 AM

Dave is posing in front of it on the inside cover of Ummagumma.

- Steve Hill - 12-20-2004 01:53 PM

I think the man is right too.

By the way, the DSOTM question was quite easy for most regulars here as there have been so many topics based on the speaking in the background that we pretty much know all that needs to be known.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-20-2004 01:57 PM

Okay, point taken, no more "Dark Side" questions; or if I do, I won't give it a build-up like I did the last one...

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-20-2004 09:24 PM

Okay, I got one:

Which Pink Floyd song has the most words in its lyrics?

- Steph - 12-21-2004 06:35 PM

Dogs....

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-21-2004 09:45 PM

Sorry, no. Had I not asked the question and thus known the answer, however, I would have guessed that at some point.

Edited By carefulwiththataxeEugene on 1103694355

woowoo, I finally know the answer to a question Eugene asked.....but I'll wait....anyone?

- InTheFlesh2 - 12-22-2004 06:43 AM

Not Now John

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-22-2004 07:16 AM

You are correct; last I checked it contained in the vicinity of 459 words.

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 08:00 AM

That largely depends on what constitutes a word too.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-23-2004 08:04 AM

Steve Hill Wrote:That largely depends on what constitutes a word too.
Well, I didn't have the time nor the inclination to count them (and every other Floyd song) myself; for this question I took MOJO magazine's word for it that Not Now John was the answer.

- Steph - 12-23-2004 09:23 AM

I didn't know we were imcluding Roger's solo works......

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 09:30 AM

Not Now John was on The Final Cut and although many consider it a Roger solo album, it definately says Pink Floyd on the cover. Also, since Not Now John is largely sung by David, it can hardly be considered a Roger solo.

Edit: Doing a copy and paste job in word, it looks like closer to 294 words, Dogs on the other hand is almost 400. So I am a little confused. ???

Like I said, I didn't count every word in every Floyd song. I saw this question in MOJO magazine, and their answer was Not Now John, and they said it has 459 words. So there.

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 10:01 AM

Hey Eugene, (this is Henry McLean), I am not doubting what you said, all I am saying is I copiued and pasted each of the songs lyrics into word and selected word count and it came up with 294 and 390-something respectively. I am confused with what was printed in Mojo, and even worse is I think they got their information from the Pink Floyd encylopedia. I am just wondering if I am looking at the wrong information.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-23-2004 10:32 AM

I know you're not doubting anything, I myself was puzzled that they said what they said...when I wrote into MOJO's Floyd contest my guess was Dogs. The "so there" bit was a joke, not a pissed-off rebuke; you'd have to do far worse than that to get my dander up. I guess this is an unresolvable issue.

So here's another question; I'm feeling lazy so it's another chart one: Following Dark Side of the Moon, what is the lowest chart position of a non-live and non-compilation Floyd album in the US? In the UK?

Edited By carefulwiththataxeEugene on 1103827331

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 12:09 PM

I know it wasn't a rebuke, just saying my disgust that if I can find the number of words in 3 seconds and it is a different answer to that in Mojo, there must be something wrong somewhere, puzzled as to what they were going on though. I'm just saying don't take Q or Mojo as bible, they are very often wrong, (according to them, dsotm has sold less than the 20 million sales of the wall).

In answer to your question though, and assuming you mean studio album post darkside AND the album with the lowest highest position, it was final cut, (6), in us and wall/momentary lapse, (3) in uk.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-23-2004 12:14 PM

Very true. I'll try to get at least two sources next time.

As far as the current question goes, those were the criteria I was thinking of, and you are correct.

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 12:16 PM

Here's a quickie, how many concerts were performed by the five man floyd?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-23-2004 12:21 PM

I think there were just five, in January of 1968.

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 12:54 PM

Ironically enough, yes. Although the band members are unsure how many they played with syd and dave, (Dave is on record as saying he thinks they played four and the fifth was when they left him), there seems to be enough sources to confirm five performances.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-23-2004 01:24 PM

OK, I haven't asked one lately, so...what is anoither name for "The Pink Jungle"?

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 01:26 PM

Bugger, I forgot that exactly. Was it a section of Interstellar Overdrive used in the Man and the Journey?

I'm going to check and if it isn't, i'm not posting the real answer.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-23-2004 01:26 PM

no...but close.....

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 01:31 PM

I see now, that part I was thinking of was The Labyrinth Of Auximenes, but The Pink Jungle's source is close to that track. :)

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-23-2004 03:10 PM

Pow R. Toc H.

- Steve Hill - 12-23-2004 03:13 PM

Spot on. I'm leaving posting anymore questions until I can think of some really hard ones.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-23-2004 04:44 PM

What country banned "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2"?

And here's a bone for all you British folk:

What does The Division Bell refer to?

Edited By carefulwiththataxeEugene on 1103849378

- Steve Hill - 12-24-2004 11:53 AM

South Africa

It is the bell that is rung in both the British and Australian parliaments to signify voting is taking place and the seperating, (or dividing), into the aye's to the right and the no's to the left.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-24-2004 02:17 PM

Right and right.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-24-2004 04:03 PM

Who was the first person the band considered asking to replace Syd in 1967?

Edited By carefulwiththataxeEugene on 1103933058

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-24-2004 11:56 PM

I don't answer when I'm sure....so obviously I'm not sure, lol, but wasn't it Jeff Beck?

- Steve Hill - 12-25-2004 03:02 AM

I think I'd read something along those lines a while back, (when I first really starting to read and learn about the band, so I guess it must have been about March/April time). I do recall seeing Beck's name in something I was reading about the band anyway, but since he was in the yardbirds by then, I think it was along shot anyway.

Edited By Steve Hill on 1103972655

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-25-2004 07:10 AM

It was Jeff Beck...but the band were too in awe of him to bother asking.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-26-2004 12:40 PM

What was "Overture"?

- Steve Hill - 12-26-2004 01:02 PM

Did it have something to do with a Looney Tunes cartoon?

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-26-2004 01:42 PM

hehehehehe, no

- Steve Hill - 12-26-2004 01:46 PM

Oh, oh, oh, me joko. Seriously, it was proposed for The Wall, similar to the Overture for Tommy, but was either not recorded or not used, though I would say the lack of it surfacing on any bootlegs suggests the former.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-26-2004 01:49 PM

correct, and I agree, surely it would have showed up somewhere by now if it was recorded

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-26-2004 02:19 PM

Which instruement can barely be heard at the end of "Wish You Were Here"?

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-28-2004 09:28 PM

anyone?

- Steve Hill - 12-29-2004 03:12 AM

I am trying to remember, I even listened to it yesterday, but forgot to concentrate enough. All I can think is the transition between have a cigar and wywh.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-29-2004 04:23 PM

Sounds like a fiddle...

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-29-2004 10:11 PM

close enough...violin

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-29-2004 10:14 PM

Besides the Floyd, who appears on the cover of A Saucerful of Secrets (towards the center of the cover)?

- Steve Hill - 12-30-2004 12:23 PM

Cartoon character.....someone like Dan Dare, but not him......forget who exactly.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-30-2004 12:37 PM

Close...think "Cymbaline."

- Steve Hill - 12-31-2004 12:00 PM

Ahhhhhh, Dr Strange

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 12-31-2004 02:16 PM

He's the one.

- Steve Hill - 12-31-2004 04:24 PM

Okay, name two things different on the cover between the US and Uk CD releases of The Division Bell?

Edit: That should have been different in the booklet. Me brain ain't saying what fingers were hitting. :p

Edited By Steve Hill on 1104606932

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-02-2005 10:59 PM

I 100% give up, no idea at all...

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-03-2005 08:40 AM

I was all set to answer about the cover until you changed it...so I don't know.

- Steve Hill - 01-03-2005 11:04 AM

Okay, switch it to the cover, the package or indeed any differences between the two. I know of at least three, but I think there are more than that. I only switched it as I thought the booklet as a whole would be easier than just the cover.

I'll answer later if nobody answers this time.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-03-2005 11:44 AM

Well, the UK version has those lights between the mouths of the heads, and appears to be later in the day.

- Steve Hill - 01-03-2005 11:57 AM

That's enough, but there are actually many more. I was also thinking of the cloud formation, (though this is linked to time of day), the sine waves on the back and I believe some of the colours are different inside, (mainly text).

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-03-2005 11:34 PM

OK, What is song is heard in a party scene in More, but not included on the soundtrack release?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-04-2005 08:22 AM

God...either Hollywood or Seabirds...I remember both being in the movie, but I can't remember which was where...

- Steve Hill - 01-04-2005 10:48 AM

Seabirds was in the movie, (that i do know), but I think Hollywood was never used, but sure if it was recorded. By that I say Seabirds.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-04-2005 11:15 AM

Seabirds is what I was thinking of, congrats to both :)

- Steve Hill - 01-04-2005 11:55 AM

I don't remember Hollywood being in the movie, well reading it was in the movie or hearing it on one of my roio's which has all movies takes that are different form the album and the non-album songs, but I may be wrong. I'll check, but if I fail to find out, can you confirm whether it was indeed in the movie?

Thanks kimbers.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-04-2005 11:01 PM

If memory serves me correct it was in the movie but to be honest it's been so long since I've seen it I am not 100% it is...so...What is/was Double-O Bo?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-06-2005 09:49 AM

It was a tribute song to Bo Diddley (sp?) by Syd way back in 1965 (I think Bob Klose was still in the band at the time...?). By the title, it sounds like it has a bit of a nod to James Bond, too...am I right?

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-06-2005 10:39 PM

correct on both counts!

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-07-2005 08:36 AM

What is the largest inflatable animal ever to accompany a Pink Floyd tour?

- Steve Hill - 01-07-2005 12:00 PM

Octupus, but I didn't think it was the entire tour, thought it was a one off.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-07-2005 12:40 PM

Not according to my sources...

- Steve Hill - 01-07-2005 12:51 PM

I'm sure your sources are correct, I was kind of answering the question and thinking out loud at once.

I seem to remember it being at Knebworth or some festival like that and not hearing of it at any other performances.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-08-2005 12:18 AM

it was a fish, well an airship (The U.S. Division Belle Airship) painted as a fish during the Division Bell Tour

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-08-2005 08:28 AM

That was it. The dimensions were 194 ft. long by 63 ft. wide by 67 ft. high.

- Steve Hill - 01-08-2005 11:55 AM

But that wasn't exactly shaped like the animal, so I still claim correctness. :)

That is the correct answer, mine was a conservative minister who had an affair with his secretary and a love child and subsequently resigned. He did return to frontline politics, but was for so long the butt of jokes about being oversexed and even sleeping with Thatcher, (not true but funny), as he summed up everything sleazy about the Thatcher government, (twice proposed to his pregnent lover, but changed his mind to save his marriage and career until it was revealed he was the father, this at a time the party was promoting tradtional family values).

Pro's and Con's of Hitchhiking?

- Steve Hill - 01-09-2005 04:42 PM

Well it was a David Gilmour solo project, but not sure if he had written it for David Gilmour and not used it or had it penned ready for his next album, About Face. Since that was about 6 years after the recording sessions for the wall started, I will say the album was David Gilmour.

- Steph - 01-10-2005 10:07 AM

Right on Steve... Wow , for someone who is admittedly a fairly new fan of the band , you sure know your ****.....

- Steve Hill - 01-10-2005 02:03 PM

I can learn a lot in a short space of time. After all you can find a lot of useless information on things like this when you are looking for something else. I am currently in ownership of about 40 roio's, almost all the albums on cd, (all if you want to count vinyl too), and am looking at the japanese mini sleeve versions too now. I also learnt a lot from skimming through most of Storm's book Mind Over Matter at various points.

Ask another.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-10-2005 08:16 PM

Fine...no longer will I precede my questions with any kind of introduction, nor will I end them with any description of their relative difficulty...I'll just ask the question and be done with it. Quite happy?

Extremely, I apologise if I am sounding cocky, but I like easily answering questions that are either supposed to be difficult or that other have got wrong previously.

Anyway, off to sleep now so feel free to cook up some other questions. I don't know all of them immediately you know.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-10-2005 11:19 PM

hehehe, I know this one, but it might be fun to see how many everyone can think of...I'll start with the easy ones: Dogs, Sheep, Pigs, Albatross, Seagulls, Worms, Mouse....next :)

- parisonj - 01-11-2005 02:14 AM

This was a question in the recent MOJO 'Ultimate PF trivia quiz'. I submitted my answer, but I have more animals mentioned than they could come up with, I mean they missed off 'Tiger'

Birds
-----
Albatross 'Echoes'
Bird (not specific) various, including 'Scarecrow' and 'Pillow of Winds'
Dove 'San Tropez'
Duck 'Apples and Oranges'
Eagle 'Matilda Mother'
Evening Birds 'Fat Old Sun'
Kingfisher 'Grantchester Meadows'
Lark 'Grantchester Meadows'
Night Birds 'The Narrow Way'
Owl 'Pillow of Winds'
Pigeon 'San Tropez'
Raven 'Cymbaline'
Seagulls 'The Gold It's...'
Swallow 'Set the controls...'
Swan 'If'
Yellow bird 'Cymbaline'

Cats
----
Cat (not specific) 'Candy and a Current Bun'
Siamese Cat 'Lucifer Sam'
Tiger 'When the Tigers Broke Free'

Dogs
----
Dog (not specific) various, including 'Seamus', 'Sheep' and 'What Shall We Do Now?'
Fox 'Grantchester Meadows'
Foxhound 'Free Four'
Rotten Hound 'Several Species...'

Fish
----
Fish (not specific) 'Wish You Were Here'
Mackerel 'Several Species...'

Other
-----
Butterfly 'Cymbaline'
Cattle 'Your Possible Pasts'
Coral 'Echoes' - strictly a colony, but still animal-life
Horse 'Yet Another Movie'
Lamb 'Sheep'
Pig various, including 'Pigs On The Wing', 'Pigs (3 Different Ones)'
Rabbit 'Breathe'
Unicorn 'Flaming'
Worm various, including 'Hey You', 'Waiting For The Worms', 'Trial'

Mole 'Free Four'
Mouse 'Scarecrow'
Rat 'Pigs (3 Different Ones)'

There are also 'Myrid of small creatures' in 'High Hopes', and a 'Cockleshell'
in 'Run Like Hell' !

I thought this was a reasonably comprehensive answer...

- Steve Hill - 01-11-2005 05:50 AM

I'd say that answers the question, although my guess was Eugene hadn't got half of those listed. I may be wrong though.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-11-2005 07:14 AM

Thanks for your confidence, SH. I can be just as cocky as you...turns out I had made a most complete list before I posted that question, and was ready to supply any and all that people missed. The only one from that list I didn't have was the cat mentioned in "Candy and a Current Bun" simply because I've never heard the song. Okay, I guess two now that I look at it because I neglected to include the coral in "Echoes."

So there.

I was just going by the previous questions you have asked that you didn't have complete answers for, but also because if I asked that question, I wouldn't have thought of half of those. that's why I would never ask a question as complex as that with out being fully confident I knew the answer.

Hope I didn't rub you up the wrong way too much.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-11-2005 09:17 AM

Not so much that you rubbed me the wrong way, it just seemed a rather crass thing to have said. And I don't have the inclination to go checking, but I am pretty sure that for most of the questions I have asked, I have known the answers.
But not to worry, no offense taken.

Now Now, boys, let's get back to trivia.........What miles Davis album influenced Richard Wright in the song '' The Great Gig In The Sky''.....

- Steve Hill - 01-11-2005 09:51 AM

I seem to remember reading his name in a usenet topic about darkside, it was Kind Of Blue, but I thought I read it about Breathe rather than great gig.

- Steph - 01-11-2005 10:04 AM

Right again Steve it was for Breathe.....My brother is a big jazz fan and he has Kind of Blue and he say's it is great....... Another one....''what was originally proposed as the title for ''The Division Bell......

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-11-2005 01:33 PM

Awaken to the Sense of Reality.

- Steve Hill - 01-11-2005 01:43 PM

And who suggested the name The Division Bell and what did he get in return for it?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-11-2005 01:49 PM

I know Douglas Adams named it...but I don't know what his reward was. Maybe playing with them on "Wish You Were Here" towards the end of the '94 tour...?

- Steve Hill - 01-12-2005 12:35 PM

Close enough, he didn't actually get the reward directly, he said he would give them a name if Dave made a sizable donation to the charity that organised the dinner they had the conversation at. Not exactly sure of the charity or size or donation though. :(

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-12-2005 01:06 PM

Okay...name two early alternative titles for "Careful With That Axe, Eugene."

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-12-2005 03:38 PM

High Hopes

Was it not What Do You Want From Me

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-15-2005 08:24 PM

maybe, but not what I'm looking for...

- Steve Hill - 01-16-2005 03:42 AM

Good, because I always looked upon that one as a bit of a sarcastic song aimed at Roger.

Wil stab time, Marooned, (since Roger effectively was from the rest of the band at the time). Honestly, this one has got me stumped.

- TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond - 01-16-2005 05:00 AM

maybe poles apart

- Steve Hill - 01-16-2005 12:03 PM

I was thinking of that one too, but thought I'd go for marooned first.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-17-2005 12:08 PM

OK, rumour has it that the six minutes of guitar, synths and keyboards in Cluster One was an attempt to recreate, albeit sounding different, the feel of Shine ON....and be a salute not to Syd but to Roger...

- Steve Hill - 01-17-2005 12:28 PM

Fascinating, wouldn't have though of that one immediately.

all good answers, and as I said...my answer is rumour...so who knows..., lol, anyhow, what was probably the first song Syd wrote for PF?

- TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond - 01-18-2005 04:51 AM

'Lucy Leave'...?

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-18-2005 11:20 PM

good answer, but tecnically the band was not known as Pink Floyd when Syd wrote Lucy in late 65.... so I guess I asked a trick question unintentionally....but we'll forgive me for now, lol, any other guesses or anyone know?

- TheDark&CrazyPiperDiamond - 01-19-2005 01:08 AM

Then it's Arnold Layne

- Echo - 01-19-2005 02:48 AM

Is it "Games For May"? ( aka "See Emily Play" )

Also, wasn't the name changed to "Pink Floyd" in early 1965? It is according to the recent Mojo Pink Floyd special.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-19-2005 11:10 PM

well, there is some discussion as to when the named was changed, Bob Klose and Chris Dennis quit in Jan 65, and most people believe the first show played by a band named Pink Floyd was Dec 1965...the song I am looking for was recorded in early 1966 and I guess I should have done more research before i said "what was the first..." but anyhow, any more guesses?

- parisonj - 01-20-2005 05:46 AM

They became the Pink Floyd Sound sometime between Spring and Summer of 65. Certainly, they were by November when they played with Jokers Wild at Storms engagement party.
Given that, the first session I know of was on 31st October 66, at the Thompson Recording Co., Hemel Hempstead. They did Interstellar, Let's Roll Again, Silas Lane (alleged to eventually become Arnold Layne), and Stoned Alone.

I think...

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-20-2005 08:35 PM

...and one of those is the answer I'm looking for....

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-22-2005 11:41 PM

anyone?

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-24-2005 07:55 PM

Kimbers Sheep Wrote:anyone?
anyone, lol?

- Steve Hill - 01-25-2005 12:25 PM

Well out of that lot, I think it was Interstellar Overdrive, their concert mainstay of the time.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-25-2005 11:34 PM

second guess?

- Steve Hill - 01-27-2005 02:29 AM

Silas Lane, looking at the back of my Relics LP, it says Arnold Layne was recorded on 27th February 1967, Interstellar Overdrive on 16th March. So hopefully the earlier version of Silas lane was recorded a few months before.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-27-2005 10:52 PM

third guess.....remember, Oct 31, 1966 was the recording date for the tune...and there is some debate over whether or not Silas Lane was recorded that early...it was according to some sources first recorded in May 68 as according to Syd, a "new song" labeled Silace Lang...but who really knows...so much is lost in history

- Steve Hill - 01-28-2005 02:50 PM

So you are saying that this is not guaranteed to be 100% correct. Oh well, I will got with my second reaction and say Stoned Alone. Damn logical brain told me to think first and I changed my mind to Silas Lane.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-28-2005 09:31 PM

100%....to be honest, no...but many people believe that Stoned Alone was the first song wrote for PF.....OK, next, name three of the medals pictured on The Final Cut

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-28-2005 09:55 PM

The Africa Star, the Defence Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. I know the fourth one but I'll keep it under my hat.

- Kimbers Sheep - 01-29-2005 12:46 AM

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-29-2005 09:09 AM

Was it AT&T?

- Steve Hill - 01-29-2005 12:23 PM

- Steve Hill - 02-06-2005 07:37 AM

Bob Ezrin, not sure why though.

Edited By Steve Hill on 1107704258

- Steph - 02-06-2005 09:04 AM

That's right.....the reason being that Roger felt that Ezrin betrayed him.... he felt that Ezrin had committed to helping Roger with his solo project ( which became ATD ) but later went to work with Gilmour and his wife in the making of the Division Bell....Ezrin has admitted to this saying that his wife wouldn't let him spend the time in England needed to fulfill his comittment....Roger was pissed because Ezrin new of this long before and he didn't bother to tell him about it....Roger found out second hand and actually had to ask Ezrin if this was true....which of course it was... :hammers:Roger also feels that Gilmour needed him more than he did and that Ezrin basically sold himself to the highest bidder......

This is diabolical - a man with tooo much time on his hands! How many people care about the album...nobody cared about... :D

Alright I'll give it a shot...
"Before Obscured by Clouds broke the US top 50, what was the highest charted Floyd album in the US"?
As far as I know that would be "Atom Heart Mother" (U.S. release 10/10/70, reaching #55 in the U.S)

..."Also, what was the highest position of the worst charting Floyd album in the US"?
"More" at #153...""Relics" at #152, but I don't know about "Saucerful..." or "Zabriskie Point"....so I guess "Relics"??!! but who's gonna remember any of this??!! :upside:

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 02-08-2005 10:46 AM

I'll give you that I have time on my hands (else why would I be a member here?), but this is hardly proof, as a cursory glance at the album pages at a good Floyd website will give you this info.

Anyway, you're right on both counts...it's AHM at #55 and More at #153. Since Zabriskie Point is not all Floyd I don't count it, and A Saucerful of Secrets failed to chart in the US so that doesn't count either.

Explanation #2 : Roadie Chris Adams, of Pink Floyd, for many a year, said this particular response - whenever asked to to the impossible (which was every day at every gig) "you can have it in any colour you like" (i.e. "eat sh*t, and die type sentiment")

They can come up with another question if they want....doesn't matter to me.... Part 1 .... Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies(baseball).....Part 2.....Gary Yudman from the ''Wall Live'' cd.....Interesting that they would use actual concert audio.....

- Steve Hill - 02-17-2005 03:01 PM

Never noticed that Yudman audio before.

Anyway, I'll ask a very easy one to get this going again. Which two songs from the 74 tour eventually appeared on the animals album? For bonus marks, why were these two songs the start of the artistic differences between Roger and David that caused the split?

- Steph - 02-19-2005 06:06 AM

Steve....gotta crank it up to hear Yudman in that scene...still
amazes me that it is in there....don't know the answer to your question ....yet....

Why would you consider knowing what songs that they performed on a tour in 74 to be an easy question......? My guess would be that they performed early versions of songs that later appeared on the Animals Album.....Raving and Drooling and Gotta Be Crazy, but I really don't know.....

Pink Floyd has a song that has a ''theme'', based on the game of chess......Name the song.....

- Steve Hill - 02-20-2005 06:34 AM

Country Song

He made his way to the border
In the shadow under the trees
Down by a stream in a hollow
Turn your head feel the breeze

And the red Queen was waiting for the news
For the white King to move
And the balance hung upon the head of one who tried
To stay within the shadows
And keep his undercover secret tight

They let him in by a backway
Into a chamber reserved for the Queen
She took the note that he gave her
Opened it slowly and started to read

Run to the treasury and bring me back some gold
Give it to the pawn who came, she cried
He says the white King thinks the game of chess is wrong
And all the courtiers crowded her
and this is what she told the gathered round

Go to the store by the dungeon
Take all the red paint take all the white
Make up a newborn colour
Cover your neighbor we'll be all right

There will be no game today, she cried across the board
Everyday will be a holiday
And all the pieces cheered as tidings spread abroad
And the Pink Queen sat
and smiled at the cat who smiled back

Nicely done.....can't think of anymore right now....

- Steve Hill - 02-20-2005 06:56 AM

Me neither, but we have managed to keep this thread going quite nicely for now.

Okay, just thought of one, but had to look it up for the exact names needed for the answer. Which two people have played in bands, outside Pink Floyd, with both David and Syd.

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 02-20-2005 07:31 AM

I think they were Chris Ian and Ken Waterson; they played with Dave and Syd in "Chris Ian and the Newcomers."

- Steve Hill - 02-20-2005 10:51 AM

Bugger, forgot about that one. Angry

Perhaps I should have gone and edited the post after all. I actually meant at different times, that's why I said bands, not a band. I thought about editing it to make it absolutely clear that's what I meant, but decided against it.

So i'll throw the question open again.

- Steph - 02-20-2005 11:42 AM

Bob Klose or Dick Parry?

- Steve Hill - 02-20-2005 03:43 PM

Nope, think Jokers Wild though.

- Steve Hill - 03-18-2005 12:34 PM

Reviving this thread again. The answer to my last question, (or the one I was looking for at least), was Clive Wellham and Tony Santi. Played with Syd in The Mottoes and David Gilmour in The Ramblers which became Jokers Wild.

New question to start off again and I will choose an easy-ish one to get discussion going again. What was Moonhead?

The unreleased instrumental played for the moon landing

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 03-18-2005 05:56 PM

I think I heard it was based on an incident where Syd was at a party, and he just left, shaved off all his hair, and returned to the party, acting like nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

- carefulwiththataxluke - 03-18-2005 06:58 PM

Steve Hill Wrote:What is the significance of Pink shaving all the hair off his body in The Wall?
I know it's definitely a reference to Syd; so maybe it symbolizes his losing his mind? (going insane)

- Steve Hill - 03-21-2005 04:16 PM

It's really a bit of all of those. Syd did shave all his hair off and his eyebrows, (not sure when, could have been a party), and it was a shaven, fat Syd who turned up to the Shine on sessions.

It was seen as party a new beginning, maybe a break away from the pop image he had gained, but it was his mental state that made him do it.

What was Storm's idea for the cover of animals that roger rejected?

- The Painter Piper and Prisoner - 03-27-2005 05:51 AM

Wish You Were Here definately

- Steve Hill - 03-27-2005 06:43 AM

Not sure what exactly is meant by that answer, what animals cover was rejected, wish you were here. Doesn't make any sense.

Just to help you in the right direction, it is in Storms book and on this website somewhere. Just do an animals search on the message boards. :;):

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 03-27-2005 07:49 AM

I think it was a cover that showed a young child holding a teddy bear walking in on his parents having sex.

- Steve Hill - 03-27-2005 08:29 AM

You think right.

Here's one that may take you back. David Gilmour is linked to Comic Relief in which musical way?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 03-27-2005 01:01 PM

He played for the backing band on a charity single in 1991 (the name of the song escapes me).

- Steve Hill - 03-27-2005 01:24 PM

Correct

The song was "The Stonk" and it was performed by British comedy duo, Hale and Pace. I have just got a low quality copy of the video to that track and am watching it now. :)

Between Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother, they played to about half a million people at Bois deVincennes, in Paris.

- Stackhouse - 04-27-2005 07:13 AM

Are talking about that the album had no cover first?

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 04-27-2005 01:05 PM

The man on fire (not Denzel Washington) got burned slightly when the wind blew the flames back at him. The solution was to change positions, shake hands with their left hands, and reverse the image.

- Steve Hill - 04-27-2005 01:21 PM

Yep, it burnt his moustache.

- AndersonCouncill - 04-27-2005 06:29 PM

When he was a young boy Syd made a magazine for his friends entitled "FART ENJOY"

When Syd was still with Pink Floyd, what did he use to help play his guitar? Should be pretty easy.

A question to satisfy my own curiosity, (and at the same time give a clue), are you talking about the item he used to run up and down the frets?

I know he used to use a cigarrete lighter among other things.

- Stackhouse - 04-28-2005 02:18 PM

I hope i'm allowed to post questions and i hope this one hasn't been posted here befor but here goes:

How many weeks did The Dark Side Of The Moon spend on Billboard's hot top 200 chart?

- Madcap Laughs - 04-28-2005 02:39 PM

Dark side of the moon was on the charts for 724 weeks. And it was a lighter that Syd used.

Depends on which recording you listen to, (the clearest two to decipher the lyrics from are the 5th and 20th June 1971). The earlier of the two is sitting, (some suggest singing, but it is more widely considered to be sitting), but since the song was constantly undergoing change, switching from one set of lyrics to another, and occasionally even switching some back, was not uncommon.

"After Roger Waters left the band in 1984, following the release of The Final Cut, he retained the copyright of the original design of the pig. He demanded $(US)800 for every time the remaining members of Pink Floyd appeared with the pig. Not wanting to pay that, they changed the pig's gender, adding testicles." - Wikipedia

I can't find it now, but I remmber some of the questions:
1) Which Floyd songs has the most amount of words in its lyrics?
2) How dd Gilmour get the steel guitar for Breathe?
3) Chapter 24 is a song mainly based on chapter 24 of which book?

I know 2), but the other 2 I'm sad to say I don't know.
#1 is Dogs. #3 is evading me right now.

OK...let's try and keep this somewhat organized, one question at a time, the person who answer's it CORRECTLY gets to ask the next one , unless they'd rather not, then simply say so...so the question on the table now is....

What was the first single NOT written by Syd?

- ComfortablyNumb212 - 12-27-2006 11:26 AM

.........Point Me At The Sky?

I'm not asking a question even if that's right.

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-28-2006 09:56 PM

wrong....next :D

- Superhuman - 12-28-2006 10:01 PM

It Would Be So Nice?

- Kimbers Sheep - 12-29-2006 12:09 AM

nope

- sjmcd - 12-29-2006 06:20 AM

If we're only counting A-sides, IWBSN would be right, so I'm assuming we're counting B-sides too.

It was Paintbox, the B-side to Apples And Oranges.

I'll repeat my last question since nobody ever answered it correctly: When was the first time David Gilmour played the slide guitar solo for Breathe live?

I would assume sometime in 1972, but I have no idea on anything more exact...

Nope, you're way off.

Edit: I'll rephrase the question, since I can't remember the exact wording of where I read it.

When was the first time David Gilmour played the slide guitar solo for Breathe on a pedal steel guitar live?

The problem is, and I'm sure not everything was covered, but if you read over 85 pages worth, an awful lot of trivia has already been answered.

RE: the trivia corner - test your know about of Pink floyd - Mr. Mojo Risin' - 04-20-2009 05:57 PM

Honestly I haven't read 85 pages and I obviously don't know what this thread's about nor how it works Blushing

EDIT: I got it now and I don't know the answer to pic3789's question so I guess I'll wait for someone to ask a nice queestion I can answer Tongue

RE: the trivia corner - test your know about of Pink floyd - frossmelic - 04-09-2010 09:22 PM

I like the post which deals with questioning of the specific question regarding pink floyd. My answer is :-Starting in 1964, the band that would become Pink Floyd underwent various line-up and name changes such as "The Abdabs", "The Screaming Abdabs", "Sigma 6" and "The Meggadeaths" (not to be confused with Megadeth). In 1965, Barrett joined them as "The Tea Set", and when they found themselves playing a concert with a band of the same name, Barrett created the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" (later "The Pink Floyd"). He derived the name "Pink Floyd" juxtaposing the first names of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council he had read about in a sleeve note by Paul Oliver for a 1962 Blind Boy Fuller LP (Philips BBL-7512): "Curley Weaver and Fred McMullen, Pink Anderson or Floyd Council -- these were a few amongst the many blues singers that were to be heard in the rolling hills of the Piedmont, or meandering with the streams through the wooded valleys."

I thought I'd bump this thread up, because it might be fun. So to inaugurate this new era, I have a trivia question for you.

We all know that the first album post-Waters was named A Momentary Lapse of Reason, after a line in the song "One Slip". However that wasn't the band's first choice. What were the other three possible album titles?

RE: the trivia corner - test your know about of Pink floyd - Lady Floydian - 06-01-2010 03:03 PM

*bump*

If no one gets this in 24 hours, I'll post the answer and then someone else can ask a question.

RE: the trivia corner - test your know about of Pink floyd - Lady Floydian - 06-03-2010 07:59 AM

.....alrighty, then.

The answers are "Signs of Life", "Of Promises Broken" and "Delusions of Maturity."

Someone else can ask a question now.
