Animals

Its hinda hard choosing between The Dark Side Of The Moon , The Wall, The Final Cut, Wish You Were Here

Animals

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Philintheflesh - 10-18-2007 04:44 AM

ANIMALS...musically too, perhaps.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Three Different Ones - 10-19-2007 12:42 PM

The Wall with Animals as a close second

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Wings on the Pig - 10-19-2007 12:44 PM

Animals definitely. Most of the lyrics in Dogs alone are worthy of that title. rocker

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Three Different Ones - 10-19-2007 12:45 PM

I think Pigs (TDO) has the best lyrics, the most bitter with the best imagery. Sheep is my second favourite, though is the most straightforward lyrically, and Dogs is of course great also

Very true with politics these days. rocker

yeah, Dogs has really good lyrics, no doubt, but I'm a sucker for the imagery and the overall bitter sarcasm in Pigs (TDO), and prolly cause it's my favourite Floyd song (with Sheep as my second, Dogs as my third), though Dogs is absolutely fantastic

Yeah. All the songs on Animals have great lyrics really, so to each his own. Cool

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Three Different Ones - 10-19-2007 12:53 PM

Yeah, That's why Animals is definitely a close second or tied for first. Though I like the idea of being able to write an entire coherent rock opera, and it working well. I really think that as a whole, the entire thing is a masterpiece, it's like writing a story with pieces..especially when they weren't necessarily written in order, and the way they're all placed together to make it work.

It's funny. For ages when I first got into Floyd I thought that DSOTM was head and shoulders above everything else, but lately Animals and The Wall have probably been my favourites, and it's probably because I am more gripped to the pieces that have a definitive concept that runs through every song, and you can relate to it a lot better.

I've always appreciated The Dark Side of the Moon but the two you mentioned always spoke to me more, maybe because I'm admittedly set up in the Roger camp in my (spit proof) tent. The Wall was my first Floyd album, and I've always been attached to it because of that. When I read up about it, and watched the movie, I was really wowed..it's astonishing. I think the album gets a lot of crap for being over-blown, and pretentious, which I admit it is but I think it's really well put together, and a very coherent effort. As for Animals well, Roger was one pissed off guy, and that's cool cause bitter sarcasm, and hating people is pretty sweet. :D

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Sydney - 10-20-2007 10:38 AM

Went with The Final Cut, for me nothing beats The Final Cut and The Gunner's Dream.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - carefulwiththataxeEugene - 10-20-2007 11:13 AM

I went with The Dark Side of the Moon. It was the one album where Roger's philosophy really came through without getting preachy (Animals) or excessively whiny (The Wall). Also, I just love the imagery evoked by the lyrics...in later albums Roger got way too cut and dry for my taste, and although he still wrote great songs, they weren't as emotionally satisfying as those on Dark Side. On this album, it's poetry...later albums seem to me to be Roger's treatises on life set to music.

Just my opinion...I could be wrong.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - cevor - 10-20-2007 12:40 PM

I don't think there's any wrong answers cwtae....Cool

coincidentally "Making Of Dark Side" was on vhi classics this afternoon..I have the dvd and watched it anyway..

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - mikinik - 10-20-2007 01:15 PM

DSoTM has been my all time Floyd favorite album so I'll go with that.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - whongolian - 10-20-2007 01:41 PM

'The Final Cut'

Perhaps the most moving lyrics I've ever listened to.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - mabewa - 10-20-2007 07:12 PM

I voted for DSotM. It has a great blend of universal themes, both personal and political. Lyrically, I also really like Wish You Were Here, The Final Cut, PATGOD, and Meddle.

The Wall has some individually great lyrics, but a lot of Pink's story kinda leaves me cold. The lyrics of Animals work very well with the music and theme, but I don't listen to Animals so much for lyrics, but rather for the overall impact.

People like to sneer at Dave and Polly, but there are parts of TDB (Wearing the Inside Out, Coming Back to Life, High Hopes) that really strike a personal chord with me. OBC is another underrated album in this respect. On the other hand, AMLOR is my least favorite PF album, lyrically.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Clint - 10-22-2007 02:57 PM

I would say Meddle just for Echoes. But Animals gets my vote

Yes...the lyrics were allowed to evolve nicely over time...their genesis being the stark, stinging, biting ones of "Gotta Be Crazy" from`74.

I think Echoes has the best lyrics, but the question is, what's the best album lyrically - I'd have to give that to Animals, which is my favorite of their studio albums.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Superhuman - 10-30-2007 08:44 PM

Animals for sure.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - pinkfloydfan1 - 10-31-2007 05:42 AM

Not for lyrics. Overall, Dark Side may be a favourite, but not lyrically

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - djdnl14 - 11-04-2007 09:02 AM

Had to think about this one for a bit, erm...going with Dark Side Of The Moon, Roger had to change some of his lyrics on Animals as Dave wouldn't sing them, so I'll go with DSOTM

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - mikoyan29 - 12-04-2007 09:35 PM

I went with The Final Cut.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - spinstergirl - 12-05-2007 03:34 PM

I went with the Wall because of the huge volumn of lyrics. The lyrics for Mother, Vera, Blue Sky and Nobody's home are pretty complex once you remove the melody.

Animals.

I have to go with the lp with Syd's swan song on it, Relics has the best variety of tunes on it.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - MrGray - 01-04-2008 07:11 PM

Either The Wall or The Final Cut.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Masonik Waters - 01-05-2008 01:56 AM

The lyrics that really touched me the most are from The Wall and WYWH.

Wish You Were Here is going to be my funeral song so I kind of wanna vote for that album but in general, The Wall just has such amazing lyrics with the only downside being that they are sometimes depressing.hammers

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - AlansPsychedelicBreakfast - 01-10-2008 11:04 AM

Going with The Wall on this one, as much as I love DSOTM's lyrics.
The Wall just has a tighter grip lyrically

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Monolith - 01-16-2008 11:16 AM

I voted for Wish You Were Here because is my fav albumBiggrin

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Some Other Jackass - 01-16-2008 01:53 PM

For me, I just find that I listen to the words and the emotions of what is being told in the songs of The Wall and The Final Cut. While to remark on the companion poll, it is the music of The Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals that most attract me.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Lostinthewall6 - 01-19-2008 04:13 PM

Animals i think, just a great album in general, The Wall and WYWH are close too

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - noname - 01-31-2008 10:26 AM

DSOTM........... if only for the lyrics to BREATHE........(thems some good lyrics.)

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Panzer at the Gates of Dawn - 01-31-2008 01:35 PM

I had to go with The Wall. It's just so intricate, and a lot of the times I can relate to the character Pink. Also songs like Vera just get into your head and move you. Close seconds were Dark Side (if only for Time, maybe the best lyrics of any single song), and The Final Cut. A lot of people voted for Animals, and while I like the lyrics on that album it's really the music on Animals that I love.

BTW, Amused to Death has better lyrics than any Floyd album IMO.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - FatherMcKenzie - 02-05-2008 12:13 AM

Gotta go with Meddle. Echoes, Fearless, Pillow... Nothing short of genius:

"And through the window in the wall come streaming in on sunlight wings: a million bright ambassadors of mourning"
"So I throw the windows wide, and call to you across the sky"
"no-one knows the wheres or whys, but something stirs and something tries, and starts to climb towards the light"
"And as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow, you look down, hear the sound of the faces in the crowd."
"I rise like a bird, In the haze when the first rays touch the sky, and the night winds die."

Pure poetry.
oh yeah and "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces!" lol

DSOTM is definitely runner up: "And then one day you find ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun."

It has to be a close tie between The Wall, Animals, Wish you were here and some parts of The Final Cut and Dark Side of the Moon.

The Final Cut or Animals, The Final Cut or Animas, The Final Cut or Animals...

I went for TFC

Wish You Were Here narrowly edges out Dark Side and Animals. I love the lyrics on that album - very strong but the music is just as powerful. I love it.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Pig (The Third One) - 11-16-2009 02:33 PM

Animals, with Dark Side as a close second.

Final Cut isn't that bad as well.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Lady Floydian - 12-29-2009 07:40 PM

Animals does have great lyrics, but in my dealings with everyday people, unless you know of or have read Animal Farm, the concepts Roger was writing about...or at least the people described, will go right over your head.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - azimuth - 01-01-2010 04:26 PM

Lyrically, it's a tie between Animals and Dark Side. Leaning more toward Animals though...

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - dogusu - 03-19-2010 05:47 AM

animals. best lyrics and best music. when you listen to the lyrics they paint a picture in youre head and give you an angry feel.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Mister Sunshine - 07-09-2010 12:32 PM

Wish You Were Here just owns on so many levels. It has all the metaphors for Syd Barrett's fall, "Now there's a look in your eyes/like black holes in the sky".
Wish You Were Here (the song) is melodic masterpiece and the lyrics are the greatest that ever came from Waters, no doubt about it, "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl/year after year" which just works perfectly.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Floydy - 07-09-2010 03:33 PM

I voted for Animals

You know that I care, what happens to you.
And I know that you care, for me too.
So I don't feel alone, or the weight of the stone.
Now that I've found somwhere safe to bury my bone.
And any fool knows a dog need a home.
A shelter from pigs on the wing

Brilliant.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Lady Floydian - 07-09-2010 05:28 PM

Animals does have great lyrics, but it's a little too much for me. I get what Roger is saying and I understand the parallels he's making especially with Animal Farm, but I think that he overdoes it a little and the lyrics overshadow some of the great music that was written for it. I'd put it #4, with WYWH, DSOTM and The Division Bell at 1-3.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - shockwave6668 - 07-09-2010 07:11 PM

It's hard for me to decide. Meddle has some great lyrics (some are fun, but wonderful!), and all the Roger Floyd days are just brilliant. However, the album which has the most heartful, breathtaking lyrics will have to be the final cut. Animals comes very close, and then all the others.

But in the end, it's the final cut. The lyrics are just as powerful as the music was from the band in the 70's. And people always bitch about the lack of music on this album, but it drives the album just as much as the music did in the 70's! And even more so in some cases. The production values are just top notch! I believe the only tracks i have issues with are fletcher and paranoid eyes!

All in all (boy I wonder where i got that from?!), the final cut to me is just as a classic album as meddle or animals. Very well done and very good. Obviously, some of the band thought so and so did EMI who were willing to re-release the album in 2004 with "when the tigers broke free".

"One of the Few" is still one of the best. Short, simple and straight to the point. Is this about war? To me it could be about anything. hero's return, gunner's dream, two suns..everything about this album..hits the heart way too deeply than people like to admit! Even people who don't like Floyd and who are not obsessed with the absurdities of war (including me) because of a lost loved one have admitted to me that this album is a lost masterpiece!

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Lady Floydian - 07-09-2010 08:09 PM

One Of The Few is the only song on that album I like and the only reason I like it is because it was featured in the "Which One's Pink?" documentary the BBC did and the juxtaposition of the song with discussion of the disintegration of the band/David & Roger's relationship was very emotional and powerful.

Other than that though, The Final Cut is the only Pink Floyd album I can truly say I can't stand.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - shockwave6668 - 07-09-2010 08:56 PM

Well we all have our opinions! But the final cut is one of the best lyrically. It's hard to listen to, YES, but very good nevertheless.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Floydy - 07-09-2010 08:59 PM

I must admit that The Final Cut is not my most favourite Pink Floyd album, but it is in my top 10. I court controversy here, but my least fave Pink Floyd album (Lyrically and musically) would have to be The Division Bell.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - shockwave6668 - 07-09-2010 09:11 PM

Damn I almost liked you Floydy! just kidding. TDB definitely has some weaknesses, but so does Meddle, Obscured, Momentary, final cut, Animals. Animals is on my top 5, but the production qualities were not as good as others. The Division Bell has high dollar production, but not like a big budget film some of it seems wasted. The middle section of the album is weakest, with the opening few tracks and the last few tracks making it worthwhile!

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - silverpot - 07-10-2010 11:25 AM

Wish You Were Here and The Division Bell are the albums that speak the most to me.
Animals is pretty strong as well, but the music is what really makes the statement I think.

Animals is great lyrically, however I've found that if you don't at least have a basic idea of what Animal Farm is about or what Roger was trying to parallel with that album, you'll miss a lot of its deeper meanings.

In fact, the Animal Farm thing is a bit pulled out of context. He did base parts of it on the novel, but to a way lesser extent than some people say. The album is perfectly understandable without any Animal Farm background.

My favourite album, lyrically, is The Wall. I think you all can understand that (without necessarily agreeing...). Animals and Dark Side of the Moon are Roger's other brilliant efforts, and The Final Cut maybe belongs to that list too. But the only album I actually find better than these latter three, is Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I simply love Syd's way of making himself seem like the happiest person alive, while the lyrics actually have a really dark, emotional meaning.

RE: Best Album - Lyrically - Floydium - 08-14-2010 06:15 PM

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Now if only they did an album based on 1984 Laughing.

Best lyrically? tis a hard one, most of the albums they did were good at creating images on the lyrical content. I'm gonna go with Dark Side, not only did I love the sound but how the lyrics really mean something. I will always appreciate how Time makes you sit back and think that it's best to do it now or else rot in old age wishing you had have done something. But the most fantastic piece of Dark Side has to be the combo of Brain Damage and Eclipse. No other Floyd song makes me sit down and think about what the lyrics are talking about. Is the Dark Side all in the head of the insane? or a part of all of us, that safe haven we go to?. Well whatever it is the song will continue to make me think and argue out what is the dark side of the moon... Animals is pretty good aswell Tongue.

I think Dark Side of the Moon is so great because it spoke about the things people hate, without pointing fingers to anybody. Brain Damage describes insanity, SOYCD described Syd. Us and Them describes war, The Wall describes World War II. Lyrics are generally better when the listener can relate it to their own life. That's why Brain Damage says so much more than SOYCD, despite the fact that SOYCD is so much more specific.

Part of why I was always drawn to DSotM was because the lyrics were about topics/concepts I could understand. Right now, the lyrics for Time are heavily relevant to me, in a way that I didn't think they ever would be. Us and Them has always been a song I've used to bring myself down when I'm in a bad mood or I'm upset about something. Breathe is a great song to put on after a hard day and you need some perspective. I believe that the same feelings are felt by scads of other people.

WYWH, while fantastic lyrically, is more pointed and less abstract -- which can make it hard to relate to. Unless you're in the music business or deal with people in that field, Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar have no affect on your life. SOYCD is about a specific person and Wish You Were Here is the only track on the album that every person can listen to and get something different out of.

Exactly my point. :)

A song I can relate to a lot is Mother, for reasons you can probably guess. It's one of my favorites, and the lyrics play a big part in that.
