The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 01-22-2010 02:44 PM Ready? Go! RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - MacPhisto - 01-22-2010 02:46 PM If Harry Potter's a wizard, why doesn't he just fix his own eyesight with magic? The funny thing about the Harry Potter world is how chaotic it would be if it actually existed. Even the simple Summoning Charm would be abused by so many people that you'd be constantly bombarded with objects that had been Summoned by somebody else. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 01-22-2010 03:11 PM I had Eastern Carolina style barbecue for dinner tonight and wow was it good. Very vinegary but good. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - You CAN Avoid the Floyd - 01-22-2010 04:00 PM Just woke up from a nap to find I'm home alone, so now I'm listening to Sgt. Pepper and having some Mini-Wheats. Pretty amazing. Also, this box set is the best thing evar. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Three Different Ones - 01-22-2010 04:17 PM Yeah, but the problem is..we have two flights Hong Kong ---> Seoul, Korea (i'm estimating around 3-4 hours), then from Seoul, Korea to Seattle, which will be around 11..and I hate sleeping on a plane..some of the worst sleep ever RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - You CAN Avoid the Floyd - 01-22-2010 04:21 PM I hate it too, I didn't know about about you, though. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - You CAN Avoid the Floyd - 01-22-2010 04:25 PM Eric gets the plane rapesies. ): Btw, I actually got a half-decent ham and cheese sandwich on a plane once. I always get stuck next to the strangest people, when I fly unaccompanied. I remember this dude, all he did was stare into his Bible, never switching the page, just staring. And there was also a woman who must've been a preschool teacher, as all she did was plan out papers that had schedules like "nap-time" and "feeding time." Well, either a preschool teacher or Dick Clark. The dude walked in and saw him dead, and instead of calling the cops, he went to the store and bought a disposable camera to take pictures of the body, after rearranging some of the items. Couldn't agree more Beth. The simplest thing is to try to post as if you're talking to your mom or little sibling. Would we casually curse and be offending in this case? The mod staff is growing quite tired of the constant circumvention of the censor and generally "throw away" posting. This will end, probably not well either. It just doesn't make any sense to me. For crying out loud, Pink Floyd swears in their songs. Therefore, anyone joining a Pink Floyd forum with ANY knowledge of the band, would already have been exposed to cuss words, and shouldn't have any problem with seeing the same words they hear from good 'ol Floyd in text on the internet (which, by the way, is no walk in the park if you're trying to find an ACTUAL family friendly anything). Sometimes the word filter gets to point where it makes good points sound idiotic (people no longer sound angry, but rather hungry). How much less awesome would "Not Now John" be if Dave sang "FUDGE ALL THAT, FRUIT ALL THAT"? It's just not right, in my honest opinion. Sure, some people (a pretty small amount, to be truthful) find swear words offensive, but it's not gonna stop people from doing one of two things: "fudging them off" or violating the filter just to get their point across. Furthermore, it is incredibly easy to violate the filter, which so many users on here do. Of course, only a select few get a talking to from a mod (i.e. Eric, Keef), which in my mind, seems rather prejudice. If people actually go and purposely add extra letters or fuck *'s or whatever, just to swear, what's the point of a filter? It's like having a two-foot-tall picket fence in front of a building that nobody's supposed to go into; there's no doubt people are going to jump over it, because not only is it easy, but people tend to want something more if they can't get it. Okay, I'm done for now, I think. If you somehow want to equate me having a problem with you all using the word "rape" in a joking manner to me being offended by adult language, you'd be wrong in doing that. I've gotten around the word filter here myself a few times and if the mods don't want me to do that anymore, drop me a line and I won't do it again. I've been personally affected by rape. Not because I myself was raped, but because someone very close to me was. Maybe I needed to qualify my problem with it so that maybe someone would actually take it seriously. I get that this is the internet and people say horrific crap all the time, but if someone says to you "hey, that's really offensive to me".....the smart and decent thing to do is acknowledge that and not act like because it's no big deal to you, it's no big deal to everyone else. When I hear people joking about it, it makes me uncomfortable. I like this place, and I like the people who post here. I've met some really interesting and fun people in the 3 months I've been a member. I feel like though, I shouldn't have to be saying any of this to you. Just felt like putting my $0.02 out there. I wasn't talking about you, just people in general. Also, I'm sure that the people using "rape" so casually didn't really know any better, and it's become such a regular word in their vocabulary, that the actual meaning has become insignificant to them. She's doing much better now than she was 6 months ago. And in 6 months, she'll be doing better than she is now. The first few months afterward, she stayed with me and my family because she couldn't be alone. She slept in my bedroom, on the floor, in a sleeping bag. It broke my damn heart. This is a person I've known 25 years. Of our group of friends, she was always the strongest one, physically and mentally. Nothing rattled her. She could walk through the projects wearing $5 million dollars worth of diamonds and not be scared for one second she'd get mugged. She wasn't reckless, she just didn't scare easily. She's living in a new apartment now with a roommate who's a really great person and she was able to go back to work and get the majority of her routine back. She's my hero. I'm closer to her than I am my own sister, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that my friend and I have similar temperaments and personalities whereas my sister and I are almost polar opposites. It's not a matter of family friendly, it's human friendly. Certain members of the forum are spoken to differently because they've been banned before, it's that simple. Apparently memories are short. They'll respond with self-serving bravado ultimately exposing their real selves even more. If the shoe fits, wear it, this is a general statement. While we try to keep a level of civility, it's a futile effort. The overall effect on the forum in general is evident and explaining it will fall on deaf ears for this is the time of entitlement. Perhaps we can just eliminate the whole OTW section then several people will have no more reason to come here as they are neither fans of the band or friends of this forum. It's turned into a chat room full of vacuous crap. Leaning on the fact that PF songs have curses in them is as deep as the conversation here, pathetic. Art is art and the rest is moronic, plain and simple. Change is afoot kids, don't let it hit you in the ass on the way out of the door. I mean, I don't see any of the still-listen-to-Floyd-everyday fans making any real contribution to this site. As in creating threads or discussing new ideas. I don't want to sound unpolite or anything but all that has changed here in the last months is new kids coming here to post on the OTW section. In fact, I know of 1 person who stopped coming here even before this massive OTW popularity raise. I guess you guys know who he is.. Anyway, that's my opinion. I truly believe that if you or any mod delete the OTW sub-forum, this site WILL die, or it will be hardly interesting for anyone; because, as I said before, no PF listeners that come here create new threads or make the existing ones even vaguely interesting. (Sorry bout the language, as you may know, I'm not from North America or any English-speaking country so it's kinda hard sometimes to express how I really feel) Cheers. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - BOOOSH - 01-24-2010 09:15 AM I still like and enjoy Pink Floyd's music, but as has been said so many times before, there just isn't that much to talk about them anymore. I'll happily contribute to a PF related thread if I feel its worthwhile and there is good discussion. I do feel, much like Mariano, and i'm sure the majority of people, that erasing OTW is just silly. Like, I really don't see any logic in it at all. There's loads more stuff I wanna say but I just woke up so I'm not feeling that sharp at the moment! Anyways...theres my opinion. Or some of it. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 01-24-2010 09:22 AM Well, you wanna know something? I'd create a bunch of threads in the PF sections if I thought more than 5 people would give a damn about them. I tried bumping up threads that I thought had some interesting qualities to them, I post regularly over there.....and there's maybe 5 or 6 people who do as well. That's it. We could spam that part of the boards with threads upon threads upon threads, but if the same people are going to post in them, what's the point? It's easier to stick with the threads that already exist and just build those. I don't think the OTW should be removed, because there's quite a few threads here I like posting in and reading every day. However, I can also understand the admin/mods frustrations that there are people here who don't listen to PF anymore or don't even like them anymore, and then complain that no one posts in the band-specific sections of the boards anymore. Here's a hint......try posting over there. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - BOOOSH - 01-24-2010 09:23 AM Sure thing Eric. Well I'll be on in like a coupla hours if thats ok? We've said before to only make topics which were legit topics and not ones that would simply last for 1-2 pages (which to be honest is what "what does your avatar mean" should have been, instead it's turned into silliness by people changing their avatars and then saying, now my avatar is blah) The Notebook was designed long ago by a mod (Wowser) who meant for it to be a place where "mini-topics" could belong, not a place for you guys to chat. And for the record, I'd rather read 1-2 decent posts a day than go through the nonsense that it posted here sometimes, keep it on MSN or YIM or whatever and stop posting simply to post. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 01-25-2010 04:43 PM I had one before, but when we moved from Georgia to where we are now, it got kind of banged-up and I didn't want to damage my needle by playing it. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Floydfan91 - 01-25-2010 04:49 PM I like the Live side of Ummagumma, there's a few on the studio side too. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - carefulwiththataxeEugene - 01-25-2010 06:47 PM I loved Ummagumma from the first listen. The live side is still my favorite live Pink Floyd release, official or otherwise, and I really dig the studio tracks. It's certainly a "marking time" album, but the decision to break themselves up and see what they came up with individually was a great exercise. Even if it didn't work, they all turned in interesting songs that expressed their personalities. I still rank "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" as my 10th favorite Pink Floyd song, and it's not just to provoke people. Although I must admit I enjoy it when it does. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Parsifal - 01-25-2010 10:37 PM I never understand why people call it the "live side". It's a whole disc of live material, not a side. There were so many that no such data exists. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Some Other Jackass - 01-29-2010 07:09 AM I suppose I can admit to being a Facebook snob. There are plenty of old schoolmates on FB and I ignore many of them due to my prejudices. If their profile picture is one that had two people in it and they cropped out the other or it looks like they took the picture standing in their own bathroom... Those are gonna be strikes against them in my book. Use some resourcefulness when advertising yourself on FB. And I don't care for too much gab and nonsense that would be associated with so many "friends" on FB. I have probably declined or ignored half the people who have sent requests. Incase you have not noticed, I can often be a jackass. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 02-03-2010 09:30 AM On one PF boot I have that features the soundcheck before the Vienna '88 show, there's a clip of David and Co. playing the riff to Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin. It's about a minute and a half of Pink Floyd doing Led Zeppelin. Now there's a cross. I wonder if Zep ever did some Floyd. It would be interesting to hear, none the less. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Some Other Jackass - 02-03-2010 12:46 PM 2010 may be a good year for Cheap Trick. They got some exposure with the younger kids in an episode of One Tree Hill (though it did not start rolling 'til middle way in) http://ch131.com/onetreehill715.htm (skip to somewhere around 19 minutes to see the band's scenes unfold) Some of their current release is seeing some hopeful download traffic on places like iTunes. They of course will again engage in touring everywhere and every week to support The Latest as well as tour as opening act in a few places around the world. The will do some live performances on PBS for Soundstage and Austin City Limits. These guys just work all the time and may get some notice this year. ARE YOU LISTENING ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!! One of the best bands on the list of musicians not yet induced to The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. I got tickets to see them in my area in March and then in April I will see Jeff Beck as well. Damn I just spent about $180 to see some aging rock stars perform live. Don't think I have ever spent more than $40 on one concert ticket. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Kimbers Sheep - 02-04-2010 10:38 AM I remember vividly buying tix to sooo many shows in the 80's and paying $10-15, and most of the acts would have unreal light shows (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, OZZY, Dio, and even STYX). Now you pay $60-100 to see either the same acts (WITHOUT the great light shows) or ones that shouldn't even still be playing together anymore. It's ridiculous, heck I know inflation has risen and cost of living and what not but c'mon, seriously, enough is enough! There is NO way tix should cost as much as they do! I saw Tesla at House of Blues (thus admitted not a name brand act anymore, but what has STYX and Journey released lately that burned up the rock radio, lol) and Meat Loaf at the DAR in DC and tix were very reasonable, so I KNOW it's possible to charge less! RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 02-04-2010 11:45 AM A good club show is $10-15.00 now. People wonder why local scenes are suffering. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - bklynFLOYDgirl - 02-04-2010 12:05 PM Ray Davies at the Hammerstein Ballroom was $62.00 a ticket, plus standing up. A vodka sour was $8.00.. and t-shirts were only $20. Seemed like the only reasonable thing... It was a great show and worth it though... RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Some Other Jackass - 02-04-2010 12:12 PM The first time I saw Cheap Trick was near 1985 at an amusement park that I worked for. Admission to the park also got you in to see the concert if you wanted to so it would have cost, like $10 to see Cheap Trick perform for probably about an hour. These are seats at a local casino and after fees the seat is nearly $50 and I am sure they will play their abbreviated 90 minute set. The first time I saw Jeff Beck was 1995 as the opening act for Santana. My seat was $25 including fees. Today those seats cost me $73 with fees and a slightly less desirable view than the previous by comparison. More comparable seats would cost me $85. In 1984 I saw David Gilmour at this same venue and our seats in that same $85 section were $12.50 total. F! I have not been to a live local bar concert in probably ten years though and resort more towards "holding out" for concerts that are highly interesting. And of course it is the ticket prices that aid in preventing me from seeing less established musicians. I would have gone to see Asia and Yes but they started at $70. There are a few places in my area where the bar cover charge is $5 for guys and the band will play two sets. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 02-04-2010 12:17 PM The Dark Side of the Moon is on the Billboard 200 this week. As if that's not cool enough, it's actually gone up 3 spots from last week. ![]() How embarrassing is it for artists that have released music recently to find that they're charting lower than an album that was released 37 years ago. The album sells consistently close to 10,000 copies a week, at least according to the last WSJ article I read. So it's not surprising but then it is. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - only floyd - 02-07-2010 01:55 AM Even more impressive is the No 1 slot for 'Weeks On Chart'.
RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 02-07-2010 09:25 AM That #1 is their peak position on the charts - it was #1 for one week back in 1973. That album has spent a grand total of 944 weeks on the Billboard charts, either on the Top 200 album charts or the Catalog Albums charts. That's impressive in and of itself. I'd love to see them crack the Top 100. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - only floyd - 02-07-2010 10:14 AM They will if you buy 10,000 albums and then re-sell them on ebay making a tidy postage profit

I remember last year I had been sick with the flu and then laryngitis for over two weeks and stayed in bed most of the time. Well, the first day back to work as a substitute teacher, I sprained my ankle. I was going out the door to leave for work, and I sprang my ankle as I was getting ready to get in my car. Luckily, I had the car to grab onto to catch my fall; otherwise, I would have fell right on my face. I went ahead and worked that day because it was too late to cancel at that point, and I limped the whole day, but I got through it, but I didn't go to school or work the next couple days because by the time I got home that day, my ankle was swollen and I was in pain. I layed on my back for two days with my ankle elevated by pillows. To top it off, I had a presentation to do in school the next evening, but I just told my professor I could not make it because I sprang my ankle. It took forever to heal. Don't be surprised if you are swollen weeks later. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Parsifal - 02-24-2010 04:02 AM I've compiled a list of a few add-ons for Firefox-like browsers which I find to be particularly useful, some of which are more obscure than others. AdBlockPlus https://adblockplus.org/ Thought I'd start out with this classic. I'm assuming that if you use a Firefox-like browser you already know what this does, and if you don't then just read the name. It blocks ads. Gnash http://getgnash.org/ Gnash functions as both a standalone Flash player and a plugin for Firefox-like browsers. A great alternative to Adobe's proprietary plugin. NoScript http://noscript.net/ This is a neat little extension I just discovered. It's a whitelist Javascript blocker, meaning that unless you explicitly allow Javascript from a particular website to run, it will block it. It also blocks some other scripts, such as Flash Actionscript. Plus, you can specify certain websites as "untrusted" to place further restrictions on what they can do. A lifesaver for those concerned about the Javascript trap, or just want privacy when browsing the web. Screengrab https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1146 This quite simply turns a web page into a PNG or JPEG image. VLC Media Player https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14730 A pretty useful plugin which brings the functionality of VLC media player to your Firefox-like browser. Unfortunately, there is no way to make this plugin handle HTML5 embedded media. WikiLook https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7675 Ctrl+right-click on any word to look it up on Wikipedia/Wiktionary. Sorry, Mac users. All of the above add-ons are free software. For a longer list of free software add-ons for Firefox-like browsers, see http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/addons.html. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Kimbers Sheep - 02-24-2010 10:01 AM Fast Dial https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5721 I really like this one, makes browsing through your favorite sites much easier RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 02-24-2010 11:42 AM Oooh, if we're doing Firefox add-ons, here are some I can't live without (that haven't already been mentioned): Forecastbar Enhanced https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1978 It's fantastic. If weather doesn't interest you, then obviously you wouldn't install this, but I like knowing what the temp is outside and what the forecast is for the next couple days and the radar screen is really top-notch. I think it's better and faster than going to weather.com or wunderground.com since it's right there at the top of your browser. GoogleTube https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8049 Not only is this a YouTube player within your browser, but it also allows you to watch YouTube videos from Google, Yahoo and Bing searches. Say you're searching "Pink Floyd Echoes Pompeii" in Google, you can watch the video straight from the search page, rather than clicking a link to take you to YouTube. Session Manager https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2324 This should be a standard install, along with AdBlock Plus (which I have). If your browser closes or crashes for some reason, or you accidentally close the window, you can re-open Firefox and the tabs/windows you had up will immediately return. I love it, and at times it's been a life-saver, when I've had web pages up and forgot to bookmark them right away. IE Tab https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10909 This is great for when you come across sites that require you to use IE in order to view it, but you don't want to use that browser. Just click on the little Firefox logo all the way in the lower right-hand corner, and it'll switch the tab to IE. When you're done, close that tab or switch it back to Firefox. If you're like me and don't even have IE on your computer anymore, this is a great little thing to have. Tab Mix Plus https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122 It just enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities. You can undo closed tabs/windows....it's basically a great companion to the Session Manager. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Some Other Jackass - 03-17-2010 07:05 AM Did anyone see Pearl Jam on Saturday Night Live the other night? Yes Pearl Jam has lost some of their star power and appeal for me but I thought the two songs they played were not bad. The stage was clearly too small for them but then many of their songs don't solicit high energy these days. Heaven help us if there are many people who still find Saturday Night Live funny and entertaining. I watch the show once a year just to check it's status and see an interesting musical guests and the comedy is always greatly disappointing. There is really no point in continuing an institution when it's performance stinks. And for so many years. I think what's his face executive has always kept it around just to be an ass to the critics. How many years have we said, "This is the worst cast! SNL is dead!" Those remarks are still true and that... Oh what's his name? He keeps making the shows. They are just awful! Here is a poorly written and executed sketch on SNL. And now a commercial. Commercial break over and now another poorly written and executed sketch followed by a commercial. Repeat this for 90 minutes and allow a total of ten minutes for the musical guest to play two songs and you get the idea. Shut it off Lorne Micheals! That's the jackpipe's name. Lorne Micheals. Just stop SNL! And keep it out of the movies also! RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 03-17-2010 07:09 AM No, but I saw them looking like clowns on the Rock and Roll H.O.F. ceremony. (03-21-2010 02:27 AM)Pink Flow Wrote: Good to see you again though and good luck with Ubuntu (?) ! Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) is a distribution (one of the most newbie-friendly; the latest version actually bears a vague resemblance to Mac OS X) of the GNU/Linux operating system. The main advantage of GNU/Linux has nothing to do with the features it provides (although it is today as feature-rich and user-friendly as any other popular operating system), but the fact that the base system is free software - think "free" as in "free speech", not "free beer". Free software respects your freedom to use, share and change the programs that you use. The opposite of free software is proprietary software, which is where the developer dictates to the users the terms by which they may use it. Common examples of proprietary software include Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, iTunes and foobar2000. Many, like myself, feel that the development and distribution of proprietary software is fundamentally unethical, because it ignores the right of society to work together collaboratively. With a few exceptions, the only person who may change or distribute the software legally is the developer, so you can't help your friend by sharing software with her - you can't even help yourself by modifying the software to do what you need it to (or, if you don't know how to program, hiring a programmer or asking a friend to do the job). Moreover, some of the worse examples of proprietary software, including Microsoft Office, get you hooked by using their own proprietary data formats to save your work that are not completely supported by free programs, so that you continue to get out your wallet every time a new version comes out. Note that free software doesn't have to be free in price - it can be sold - but with free software you have the option of having different vendors to choose from, which creates competition and keeps your options open and prices down. Most GNU/Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, are not 100% free software. I feel this needs to be made clear to avoid the misconception that Ubuntu users are completely free from proprietary software. However, Ubuntu is, in my opinion, the best introduction to the GNU/Linux system because it is so user-friendly. If you would like more information on completely free GNU/Linux systems, gNewSense is a great one derived from Ubuntu (future versions will be derived from Debian instead, another not-completely-free distribution). Finally, I would like to add that I have developed quite an interest in free software over the past couple of years and learned a considerable amount about it, so if anyone has any questions about free software alternatives for the proprietary programs that they use, or any other questions relating to the subject of free software, I'll be glad to answer them. Strange cos when I first bought it back in the 70s other folk told me it was for young hippies , little did they know and I bet those same people now have it in their collection![]() My son asked me only last week what was in my opinion the best album in my collection, I tried hard to sway from being too pink floyd biased but I could not fight it as much as I gave it a lot of thought, 'The Dark Side of the Moon', it has to be, it's played more than any other album I have RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 05-26-2010 02:22 PM I think part of the reason it continues to sell as much as it does, is it's a timeless record. Timeless meaning, the production and music doesn't sound dated and the themes and concepts explored in the lyrics are relevant to everyone, no matter when they listen to it. Everyone goes through a period where the music on that album speaks to them, gives them purpose, explains things to them that they are confused or unsure about. I can't think of any other album by any other artist in which you can say that. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 05-26-2010 04:17 PM I just remembered something -- I graduated from high school 10 years ago today. Where did the time go?! It's the sort of bar that has a few musicians that will play song requests, performing live on piano, guitar and other instruments. My request for The Beatles' "Hey Bulldog" was deemed too random and obscure and was not familiar to the performer so he substituted "Rocky Raccoon", which started off well but he shortened the song because he felt it too was a not well known to the crowd. He switched to a short version of "Eight Days A Week" to bring the crowd back into it. So then I decided to not request Supertramp's "Child Of Vision" because they would no doubt make a substitution for something more popular. Not bad, though. I hope more people keep buying it! LOL Its chart position probably isn't a very accurate indicator of how many new people are discovering the music, for two reasons. First, some people who owned the LP years ago may be only now purchasing the CD. Second, a large number of young people discovering new music today are downloading it, and not necessarily buying it. I myself see little reason to buy an album made nearly forty years ago; the rationale for album sales is to support what the artist does financially, and this only applies if you're buying music that's been released in recent years. Buying music made in the 1970s does absolutely nothing to support what those artists were doing back then; if they're still doing it now, they'll still have album sales now, and if they're no longer active then there's no need to support their work. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - forreverendgreen - 07-23-2010 06:50 PM Oh, Steve. You and your shocking rightness are the reasons I came back. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 07-24-2010 02:18 AM Oh Steve, you so consistently don't get it. By the time I was old enough to get an allowance and go buy things with that money, PF was no more. So when I got into the band and started collecting their work.....they weren't out there making more albums and touring. So by your rationale, I shouldn't have bought any of the vinyl albums/CDs that I did, because they weren't making anything at the time and buying the older stuff is just a waste. I'm sorry, but I don't think so. How else is someone going to start collecting an artist's work that they like unless they buy it? I'm not going to download something I want to physically have. I like taking the vinyl out and putting it on my record player -- you can't do that with an mp3. I support Pink Floyd because I'm a huge fan. Part of that is buying their back catalog. It's not going to make a hill of beans difference to them financially whether I do or I don't, but it means that there's another person out there listening to and loving their music, the same as someone was when the records first came out. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - only floyd - 07-24-2010 02:20 PM Have to agree with Electrophile, I still buy 'old' albums when recommened to me and for some weird reason it is very pleasing to listen to an album that is so good and yet so old that I somehow missed it. Surley music past is still for the younger. I still see where Steve is coming from, most younger people today are much happier to just download as much music as they please, rather than fork out their allowance for one album at a time. I'm one of the former, just because I haven't got even close to the amount of disposable income to spend on buying music at a regular rate. Most times, though, if I really like an album, I'll always end up buying a copy. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 07-24-2010 03:12 PM I don't have a lot of disposable income either -- I'm currently unemployed. But when I have a few bucks I can spend getting a vintage album on Ebay or a new CD from an artist whose work I collect, I do. It's a treat for me. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 07-24-2010 03:13 PM I understand, the thing is that it's always been that way, but people didn't have the technology previously. So by your rationale, I shouldn't have bought any of the vinyl albums/CDs that I did, because they weren't making anything at the time and buying the older stuff is just a waste. In the case where you like to have a physical vinyl/CD copy, you're paying for the medium, not the music. In many ways, this is akin to buying merchandise, only in your case the merchandise can be played back on a turntable. Nonetheless, I didn't say that it was wrong to buy music or that you shouldn't be, only that I don't think it's wrong to get it in other ways either. In many cases, people who download music wouldn't be buying it anyway, whether it's because they can't afford to or because they don't want to spend $30 on something they don't know if they'll like. If the artist isn't losing anything, then you haven't "taken" from them in any meaningful sense. Moreover, in some cases illegal file sharing actually helps artists to make money. I have discovered at least one band illegally that I later went and purchased CDs from, who never would have made those sales if not for me obtaining their music illegally. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 07-25-2010 03:08 PM Bottom line is that it's illegal. Period. No rationale will make it right. "Why should I pay for something when I can have it for free?" The problem with the law, and with the general public's misunderstanding of copyright, is that they misattribute the owner of a copy of a copyrighted work. Copyright is often mistakenly equated to property (and the use of the propaganda term "intellectual property" doesn't help this misunderstanding), which leads people to believe that all copies of an album belong to the copyright holder. It makes a lot more sense to consider each copy of an album the property of the person who bought it. If they choose to make that copy available online and I choose to download it, then yes, maybe I am getting something of value without paying for it, but the owner of that copy has chosen to make it available to me. It's no more wrong than if I decided to give away my computer at no cost. Property being what copyright is not, what copyright is is a means of encouraging creative expression by granting the publisher a temporary monopoly over the distribution of copyrighted works. Unfortunately, over time copyright terms have been extended so that they are now permanent for all practical purposes, and copyright has also been broadened to prohibit harmless activities like sharing CDs with friends. Thus, I propose fairer copyright terms to be a temporary monopoly only on commercial sales, and only for a period of five years from the date of publication. This allows sufficient time for the artist to make a profit from the sale of a copyrighted work without imposing harsh restrictions on the public, and after five years the work lapses into the public domain. I hope this has helped to clarify that my argument stems not from a sense of entitlement, but from a consideration of what is fair use of another person's published work. Of course, they are free not to publish it and then none of this would apply. The discontinuity is particularly apparent when you compare the film with the album; the fact that some tracks have been rearranged shows that there really wasn't much thought given to what happened when in the "story". Unfortunately, they never made it back to their original standard again. I maintain that Animals is the last decent thing they put out (and, depending on how you define "they", the last thing they put out, period). I will say that parts of The Final Cut aren't bad, but parts of it are, and as a whole it's not that great. The only good "story" album Roger ever made was Pros and Cons. The Wall sucked for the reasons listed by others in this thread, and Radio K.A.O.S. sucked because the record label made him replace crucial bits of the story with a "happy" ending. Matter of fact, I couldn't care less about any of that junk. The reasons you mention all come down to it being an opera, which plainly means that you don't like operas. Of course, it being "pretentious and tedious" is not related to it being an opera, and I don't say you're wrong, since there's no arguing about opinions. I just find it annoying to read when people use derogating terms for something just because it is not their kind of thing. Needing to know a lot of background information is completely normal when watching an opera, and it doesn't make The Wall a bad movie at all. As I said before, I don't like listening to Mozart's music, but you won't hear me saying that his work isn't good. How about that! It is yes, but that's not how the Billboard album charts work. They're based on sales, and the Hot 100 (singles chart) is based on sales + radio airplay. So if TDSOTM is at #69 this week, that means it is the 69th biggest selling album in the United States for this week. For an album that's been out for 37 years, that is really a remarkable feat. Considering this is the highest its been on the charts in 30 years, that's something else as well. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Arno Sluismans - 12-05-2010 03:11 PM ... Wow. It's one of those albums that always sells, no matter what, in steady amounts. It's re-entered the chart probably a dozen times or more this year alone. Hell, it's up to 772 total weeks on the charts now. Also, last week Amazon had the album as one of their special $1.99 album downloads and for people who may not be able to find it in stores or who don't want a physical copy of the album, that's too good a bargain to pass up. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - DrKole - 12-20-2010 12:12 PM Oh cool, thanks for clearing that up... RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - sea green queen - 12-22-2010 11:15 AM I see the DADT thread was shot in the butt because someone got ticked off, such is life. It dosen't take much to stir the crap bucket for some when it comes to homosexual people & abortion, even when it's the truth, these two subjects can't take much public scrutiny. I believe people have the freedom to choose their own life (my cousin chose this lifestyle, he was treated for HIV 5 years & died from AIDS 3 months later). It looks like maybe DrKole's stats may be pretty accurate, below is a few of the sites I looked up. If you're not real sure about them, please do your homework.....remember these are just stats, the truth is always far stranger. http://avert.org/young-gay-men.htm http://fathersforlife.org/dale/aids1.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/26/AR2008062603521.html RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Kimbers Sheep - 12-22-2010 11:36 AM And I think you mis-read his "stats". He said 30% of gay people are HIV/have AIDS, NOT that 30% of people with HIV were gay, HUGE difference. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 12-22-2010 11:58 AM Homosexuality isn't a lifestyle, dear. You're either born gay or you're born straight. If it's a "lifestyle" how do you account for tons of research showing homosexuality in the animal kingdom? You mean to tell me a penguin can choose to be gay or choose to be straight? Also, the reason the thread got sh!tcanned was because the tone and topics the thread devolved into were heading down the "Homophobes Welcome!" highway, and I didn't start the thread for that to happen, I had actually hoped an intelligent conversation about the subject could be had. I clearly was wrong. If you don't like gay people, fine. Your choice. You don't like abortion either? Your choice too. However, keep your religiously-backed displeasure of those two things to yourself and let the rest of us evolved people carry on in the 21st century. Now have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - sea green queen - 12-22-2010 12:29 PM Big difference, yes. But the stats is all that I was refering to, whether they lie about their status is anyone's guess. But then we still have those that hide behind the bi label, blood transfusions, etc. How many of these are gay, asking them would be profiling, and that's just not right, according to some people. As I see it, if a man is married & keeps going back to men, he is gay. There's really no telling what the actual percentage would be if the real numbers were tallied up. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 12-22-2010 12:56 PM You can get HIV or AIDS through blood transfusions, although that is increasingly rare now that all blood that is donated is automatically tested for a whole host of maladies, that included. In fact, it was the increasing infection rate amongst hemophiliacs that prompted the blood banks to demand a test for HIV, because it was infecting and killing people whom they thought were outside the target demographic for the disease. No one thought heterosexuals had to worry about infection.............until they started getting infected. Do you know who the biggest at-risk group for HIV infection in this country is? Women. Do you know the infection rate of AIDS in Africa right now and the biggest at-risk group there? Women and children. Not gay men, not drug users, not bisexuals......women and children. AIDS does not discriminate, AIDS infects anyone it comes into contact with, it doesn't care what genitals you enjoy messing around with. As for bisexuals, I myself am a hetero chick and have no desire for women, but there are people in this world believe it or not, who are sexually attracted to both genders. Nothing wrong with that. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 12-22-2010 02:32 PM I really think the DADT thread should be re-opened. Opinions will have to go somewhere, and it would be foolish to let them flood into other threads. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Arno Sluismans - 12-22-2010 02:40 PM Feel free to start a thread about homosexuality... RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 04-11-2011 08:48 AM I wish Egyptians cared as much as Americans do for animals. We have an infinite amount of loose cats and dogs in the streets. I see a dead/squashed-cat/dog at least once every week. They just don't care for them. I used to have a cat when I was 3. We were still in Canada back then. I used it as a couch, so it bit me and ran away. I never saw it again. My father and his exgirlfriend used to have a dog called Hind, but when they broke up, she took it. We bought two cats around 2 years ago. My father thought they were extremely annoying, and had absolutely no positive feelings towards them. I personally thought they were funny and cute...except for the times where they stuck their heads between the fridge's door when I was closing it. That was very funny. But, yeah, when they realized my step mother is expecting, they had to give the cats away, and they did. I found the same when I lived in Greece but they are slowly coming round to the fact that Cats and Dogs also make good pets, it's the culture I guess, cats were there for the rats and dogs for any intruders to the land. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 04-11-2011 02:45 PM Not all Americans treat their pets decently. My family treats our pets like family, and we do for them like we would any one of us. We racked up nearly $1,000 in vet bills for our kitty that we had to put down, because there was no other option. We weren't going to euthanize until the vets told us that there was no more medically that could be done for him, and that's what we did. That way we could be comfortable with the knowledge that we did all we could, and spared no expense. There are a lot of other people in this country though, who thinks pets are just animals, and while they may give them the basics (shelter, water, food, minimal medical care), they don't do anymore that. Me personally, I find that abhorrent, but that's because I'm an animal lover, and don't view them that way. With my student discount, it only cost me $949. Besides, with Macs you're also paying for the security of knowing you'll never need another anti-virus/anti-spyware or firewall program again. That, and you're almost guaranteed never to have it crash, because you don't have to worry about the computer hardware being made by one company and all the software being made by another. Everything is made by Apple. I'm willing to pay that price for that kind of peace of mind, though I can understand how it might be initially off-putting for some people. Computers are one of those things. I mean, winning them is one thing, but intentionally seeking out cheap computers is just.....I don't know why people do it if they don't have to. They'll end up costing you 10x more in the future when they break down or need expensive parts replacement. It's better to pay more up front so you're not paying more in the future. That's why I won't use anything other than an Apple anymore. With AppleCare, if something happens to your computer that's not your fault; as in, you didn't spill something on it, drop it, throw it out a window, whatever.....Apple will repair it for free. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 05-08-2011 01:48 PM Haha, gotta love Apple. They refused to fix my 5 year old iPod nano, though. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 05-08-2011 04:00 PM That's not Apple's fault, though. They don't make any old versions of anything anymore, be it computers or computer accessories like iPods. That's why you have to take very good care of your electronics, because after a certain point, there's no service for them anymore. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 05-09-2011 02:27 AM Indeed. Although, it's hard to daily use an iPod Nano for almost 6 years without it breaking at a certain point. The reason it broke is not because I didn't take good care of it, but the top part, the part that has the hold button is actually glued to the iPod, and I guess the glue went off with time. Luckily, I had not locked the iPod before it came off, so now I still get to use it...it's just unlocked all the time

RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 05-28-2011 03:40 PM I wish some of the more active posters on this site would take the initiative and start some new threads. I love this place and I love talking about Pink Floyd, and it profoundly depresses me to see people who post here daily not doing anything. I've tried bumping threads that I thought could inspire some new conversation, especially if they haven't been posted in a while, but no one cares. I know they aren't an active band anymore, but is that really any excuse? RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - only floyd - 05-28-2011 10:53 PM I agree with what you say LF and in my opinion this site really lacks regular posters, in all honesty if I start a thread or make a reply I bet either you or Joe will be the next to post, this said I also think that a Pink floyd forum would ultimately 'dry up' which is a shame because of all the forums I vist or visited the guys here are the best. A lively forum is one where a subject is very active and has loads of up to date news and info, plus it seems all new members with the names like 'xvetuaflwop56mht' and posting a load of rubbish does not help. PFO has 30,000 members, where are you all? RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 05-30-2011 02:13 PM Does David ever change his t shirt? RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 05-30-2011 02:52 PM No, Joe. He wears the exact same shirt 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He's had the same black t-shirt on for the last 17 years. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 05-30-2011 02:59 PM I don't think it's the same one. He must have bought an insane amount of the same t shirt. Could he be mourning someone? RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Lady Floydian - 05-30-2011 03:03 PM OMG Joe, that was sarcasm. Good grief. If you ask a ridiculous question, you're going to get a ridiculous answer in response. Of course he hasn't worn the same shirt every day for 17 years. He's not mourning anyone, he just likes to wear all black. It worked for Johnny Cash. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 05-30-2011 09:12 PM I know! I was just playing along . Really! I still find it cool though, to have your own signature outfit...even when it's not very special.

RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Kimbers Sheep - 05-31-2011 10:57 AM There's actually a couple of issues here really. Number one it doesn't help that, depending upon how you look at it, 2 out of 5 members of the band are dead. It also doesn't help that there has not been an album released in over 15 yrs and some would argue longer. It also doesn't help that over the years pretty much every PF topic has been done to death, and while rehashing a old discussion may bring it back to life for a bit there is also the issue of members willing to continue to discuss the topic, many of us that have been here a long time simply don't really have the need nor desire to reiterate what we've probably already talked about time and time again. Look at me for instance, I discovered PF over 30 yrs ago, I kinda ran out of things to say quite some time ago, and while I could join in arguments what's the use, most things are either accepted "fact" by now and to beat the dead horse would strike me as silly or they are "facts" that none of us will, in all likelihood, ever know the truth about, either way it's simply old news to me. And, while it is nice to see newer people "discover" the band I, personally, get a tad tired of seeing the same old arguments and disagreements and I think we all know how I feel about "I'm right, you're wrong" type of battles, now don't get me wrong, I love discussion, but it does seem that many turn into the afore mentioned type, and that simply gets old. Now, and I'm gonna try and be careful how I word this...perhaps...just perhaps more "lurkers" might post if they weren't "afraid" of being jumped on about their questions/opinions, you guys do come across sometimes as "know it alls", and I know it's the internet so voice inflection is missing but still...I'm just expressing my thoughts on how some (many) of the arguments appear...having said that, bottom line we need new members who are active, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure that regardless of what we attempt that can happen to a board based on a band who while we think is the best, have never been "that band" that appealed to the masses. Maybe it's simply been too long since the band was active and we're becoming a dying breed. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - only floyd - 06-02-2011 12:35 PM I understand where you are coming from KS, to me too it seems a long time ago that I first heard something 'different' and to which would have a profound effect on me, it was of course the early 70s with 'The Dark Side Of The Moon'. All said I think there is still a community here, and one that now does not have to be solely around Pink Floyd, we are together in another way now, this site remains to me somewhere I like to catch up with people not just Pink Floyd, it's obvious to me that many feel the same especially when you have banned members coming back, and rightly so, it's here they should frequent. Let's hope though that old and new members post more because this site has more to offer. This is still somewhere for new fans of Pink Floyd to feel as one and express once again that wonderful feeling I had all that time ago. Gorgeous collection! I will to think very hard whether to buy that package. We got a team together and traveled to a roller hockey tournament this passed weekend. Some really good competition. We played well; just not as well as a few other teams. One if our games we were heavily penalized. At one point we were shorthanded for six minutes; two of those minutes were two against four. None of our opponents scored powerplay goals. But we lost a few too many games and took fourth. I played a couple hours last night and the lack of cool air and relative humidity got the better of me by the end of the session. I am sure I sweat away at least five pounds of water weight. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Some Other Jackass - 10-24-2011 06:49 AM Last week I was jumping around YouTube just looking at different videos and I came across a shirtless geezer demonstrating his performance of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts I-V", so I watched most of it. He played the guitar to a backing track but played very well. Nice tone and sustain; much like Dave. I lost interest somewhere along Part IV, shortly after he started vocals, but his guitar was very good. One of the next suggestions YouTube listed was someone demonstrating the guitar of Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Lovin' You", one of my favorites on III. So I clicked and began listening. For some reason, the song was very disappointing and uninteresting. It was not his playing but the song itself. At that moment, compared to the guitars of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts I-V", "Since I've Been Lovin' You" was a complete letdown. Very strange. I can listen to classic rock stations from England, Australia, New Zealand, and several European countries if I wanted to. Yesterday I heard One Slip, Learning To Fly, See Emily Play, and Empty Spaces/Young Lust - I'm glad radio stations are realizing Pink Floyd did more than three to four songs at the most. I've also noticed something else about classic rock radio stations - they play only about 12 bands. I have heard the same four or five songs from Boston, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx, Van Halen, and a couple others I'm forgetting.....every damn day. Different stations, different states.....same damn songs. Come on playlist programmers - get creative. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 11-04-2011 02:11 PM Playlist programmers? That sounds like a really interesting job. I want to be a playlist programmer. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 11-04-2011 02:11 PM Playlist programmers? That sounds like a really interesting job. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - forreverendgreen - 11-05-2011 02:29 AM My classic rock station plays New Order and Kate Bush I don't listen to it because 99% of the other acts are AC/DC and also AC/DC, but it played New Order and Kate Bush, and that in of itself is impressive RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - cevor - 11-13-2011 12:45 PM Sandra (Tarantula) and I are celebrating our third year anniversary as the first and only married couple to meet on pfo. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - only floyd - 12-24-2011 01:30 AM I had my 2001 Christmas in Orlando and it was fantastic, will always remember it as one of my best Christmas's. This year in the UK it seems quieter, I think everyone is getting slightly bored of the same old thing but I think if anything it's a good excuse to enjoy, be happy and think of others, if you're religious then it's also a good time to remember why we have Christmas. I enjoy the build up to Christmas especially now my boys are older and I no longer have to do an Arnie in search of 'Turbo Man'. Are you suggesting that you have never paid for a cd before? Prior to this and excluding any downloaded music, none of your album collections cost you money? How old are you? I mean I sort of long suspected that most teenagers and people in their early 20's no longer went to a music store and paid for a cd and that sharing and pirating was a common practice. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 02-05-2012 01:02 AM Yes, I never paid for a cd before. I'm 17. Of course, I prefer the non-pirate stuff, it's just that we don't have any music stores where I live. The only one we have is Virgin megastore, and even that doesn't have that big of a collection. Not to mention, that all of its products are imported, so they're ridiculously expensive. You get music without paying for it because you can. You are young and have those sets of values and expectations. You pay for bottled water but steal music. People pay $4 for a glorified coffee but think they should get all their music for free. Kind of screwy. Where do your friends get their small amounts of non pirated music? Is online shopping so prohibitive as well? I find lots of fair priced physical copies of music on Amazon. Anyway... Let me know the secret to getting a free girlfriend also. That might be handy to have around when my wife is out of town. RE: The Notebook v. 3.0 - Joe - 02-05-2012 11:23 AM I don't want to push it, but I don't think downloading music should be illegal. Simply because if it's available on the internet that probably means it already sold a lot. Would you feel better if my friend bought a CD, downloaded it on iTunes, and then handed it to me? Even though I don't pay for my music, I would definitely pay to support an aspiring musician, if I could. I can't shop online. The friend who got her non-pirated music is a very old American expat. Not really, new music is available on the Internet before the sales really start and this limits the ongoing sales. As SOJ said, the cost of CD's now is cheap and imo, being an oldie, you can't beat having the original CD case in your collection, I mean it really is a case of genuinely owning a peice of music that you contributed to with minimal payment, it's the least one can do to show appreciation and gratitude for the hard work done by all to produce the music to disc. I'll also second the free girlfriend
