DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - a7a7a7a7a7a7a7 - 03-13-2010 12:15 PM What are the pros and cons of each one? If I were to get only one of them, which one should it be? RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - Lady Floydian - 03-13-2010 02:04 PM Truly, I'd advise getting the original, from 1973. My vinyl is one of my prized possessions and in the case of a house fire, after making sure my puppy and both cats made it out alright with my family, I'd grab it. That said, definitely pick up the 30th anniversary release. Here's a blurb from Wikipedia about it: Quote:The original quadraphonic mix,[nb 11] though commissioned by EMI, was never endorsed by the band,[37] but to celebrate the album's 30th anniversary an updated surround version was released in 2003. Some surprise was expressed when the band elected not to use Parson's quadraphonic mix (done shortly after the original release), and instead chose to have their current engineer James Guthrie create a new 5.1 channel surround sound mix on the SACD format.[37][99] Guthrie has worked with the band since co-producing and engineering their 1979 release, The Wall, and had previously worked on surround versions of The Wall for DVD-video, and Waters's In the Flesh for SACD. Speaking in 2003, Alan Parsons expressed some disappointment with Guthrie's SACD mix, suggesting that Guthrie was "possibly a little too true to the original mix", but was generally complimentary to the release.[37] RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - wet dream - 03-13-2010 04:00 PM The 30th anniversary version on vinyl is base heavier. If I were you I would get all 3. If you have SACD player, I've seen an interview with the late Richard and another one with David and they both said that the SACD is a good mix when played on SACD player. Richard talked about some tubular bells being mixed into the SACD. RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - a7a7a7a7a7a7a7 - 03-13-2010 07:42 PM I don't have a SACD player or record player, I was going to put the CD on my iPod. I heard that they put too much of a space between songs on the SACD anniversary version, is that true? I've never heard anything about the space in between the songs on the SACD before. I have heard that the SACD doesn't sound to hot on a standard CD player. I have two, one German pressing, and one regular. ![]() But yeah, vinyl's pretty amazing. I would suggest buying a turntable. And on a side note, if you happen to have the opportunity to get Meddle on vinyl, get it, it's quite amazing. I have two copies of Meddle too. >.> RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - Lady Floydian - 03-14-2010 10:44 AM Oooh, you need a record player. The only way to listen to PF properly is on a record player. RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - a7a7a7a7a7a7a7 - 03-14-2010 01:43 PM Okay, so I'm gonna get the original version on CD for now, maybe later I'll get a turntable or SACD player. Thanks everyone RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - codayo61 - 03-15-2010 10:24 AM (03-14-2010 10:44 AM)Electrophile Wrote: Oooh, you need a record player. There's a warmth and a fullness to the sound on vinyl that you miss when listening to digital formats, whether it's CD or mp3. I'm not dissing digital, my iPod is my baby and it goes with me everywhere (well, not everywhere) but there's something about opening up the jacket, pulling the sleeve out and putting the vinyl on the platter and then moving the arm over that is just so.......cool. Especially if you can get your hand on an original vinyl release from the year the album came out. It's like you're owning a piece of PF. Someone bought that album around the time it came out and now you have it. I'm a dork for this kind of stuff, I guess. I remember you saying those exact (or close to) words somewhere before. ![]() But yes, getting a turntable was one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. RE: DSOTM original vs. 20th anniversary vs. 30th anniversary? - wot's uh the deal? - 03-16-2010 06:27 AM vinyl rocks and if you get a matrix surround sound amp and 4 polk speakers and a pro-ject turntable you can have vinyl in quad. DSOTM in real quad is the bog's dollocks! |
