In 88 days, 6 hours, 27 minutes, and 37 seconds it will be Christmas! And I don't know what I'm getting! :(

Stevie's not been bothered about Christmas for quite some time now. In fact, he's hated it for at least 8 years now and indifferent for about 11. As you get older, you get more cynical about the whole event. When your parents are 53, (as they will be this year), you'll be 23 and your sister will be 25, it isn't the same as when you are a child or at best a teen.

- wiez - 09-27-2005 01:39 PM

Hell Steve, I am 55! My daughter still insists on a big Christmas. This year we are, hopefully trimming down to an old fashioned baking Christmas. I ususally get zip. She ususally gets everything. But I must say, we do enjoy Christmas. Stop being such a Scrooge Steve!

- carefulwiththataxeEugene - 09-27-2005 01:39 PM

It may not be the same, but I'm 20 (I'll be 21 by the holidays) and I still love Christmas, although mostly because I get to see my cousins who live far away and who I get to see maybe four or five times a year. My joy during the season has little to do with the holiday itself. Autumn and winter are also my favorite seasons, so it's just a happy time of year through and through.

i'm gonna get me a axe (RED STRAT)

- ImTheFloor - 09-27-2005 01:45 PM

Lots of CDs. Maybe a guitar tuner.

- paulintheflesh - 09-27-2005 01:50 PM

ImTheFloor Wrote:Maybe a guitar tuner.
That's a good idea. I should ask my parents for one of those electronic guitar tuners. I can't seem to train my ears to use a keyboard or pitch pipe. :upside:

Good suggestion. Thanks Paul :)

I think ImTheFloor really suggested the guitar tuner but thanks! BIG HUGS! :D :D :D

wiez Wrote:P.S. ( I already bought her the first gift today) Shhhhhh! :sleepy:
It better not be an iPod nano. If it is, pm me, (just in case she spots what you are posting here), and I'll tell you why.

Oh, and it's not financial reasons I hate Christmas. I just feel that

a) many are charitable at Christmas, but at no other time in the year
b) it brings out the worse in some, greed, fighting for presents for their children and shouting at others for not having enough when they should have shopped earlier
c) those who are on their own feel even worse when they see others surrounded by family and friends and many get suicidal
d) despite being an athiest, too many have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, (even if it false), and sold out purely to commercial activities
e) if your family are too poor to get that years must have gift, going back to school in January knowing your friends all have one is tough of a child, I know because I had friends in this position and they almost always tried to avoid the subject, and despite never receiving that many gifts myself, (cynical parents too), I sometimes joined in with the joke
f) you feel the compulsion to eat too much, when you know fully well millions in the world starve every day

I know I sound righteous and like a killjoy, but they're the reasons I can't abide that time of year. It's nice to see the looks on the faces of very small children, but once they get beyond a certain age, a lot of them merely start thinking about their own needs, not others.

- wiez - 09-27-2005 02:19 PM

Well Steve, I give year round. At Christmas, I give to kids, but I love to give to my daughter. Surprisingly, she enjoys small gifts the best and has asked me not to spend money on big items. I love to see her smile when she opens her gifts, even though I know she opens them before Christmas and seals them back up. Last year she opened one and had a hard time putting it back together again. It was hilarious. I told her I knew she had opened it, but she kept denying it. Eventually she finally admitted it. Stubborn. Actually the first gift was a book. I am going to buy her a bass and amp (if her father doesn't). But she usually just likes alot of small, lovely things. :)

- ImTheFloor - 09-27-2005 02:23 PM

I want to get my mom something nice, since she's pretty much being beaten by the school system (teacher).

I'd better save up, no CDs for a while.

- Steve Hill - 09-27-2005 02:34 PM

I'm now actually at the point where I spend more on my parents than they do on me. I think the ratio worked out at 2:1, (mainly because I bought for each of them seperately and they bought the same amount for me, but between them). I would like to buy some much bigger presents for them in the future though, it's only fair after all they've done for me over the years. I will probably save the big presents for their birthdays when I am doing that though.

- Ohm - 09-27-2005 05:00 PM

Man, you all are all getting into the Christmas spirit... I can't! I live in Texas, and it got up to 98*F today where I live! It's a little bit early to put in the Sinatra sings christmas classics CD for me. :p

I think that, in a way, is a good thing because I savor the month or so a ton more than I did when I lived up in Ohio and New Jersey. My favorite part is seeing my cousins, even though we're less than a half hour away from eachother.

ooooooooohh, steve wont like that.

like i said before

NOTHING!!!!

- Steve Hill - 09-28-2005 01:06 AM

Just because I don't like Christmas, doesn't mean others shouldn't, especially Children and Teens.

Oh, and which iPod are you hoping to get? Apple have announced that a tenth of one percent of the nanos are defective, it wasn't just bad luck.

- Harris - 09-28-2005 01:10 AM

Im hoping to get an orginal Ipod
Nanos havent even been released here yet

Fingers crossed you'll be happy with it then.

- ImTheFloor - 09-28-2005 03:24 AM

Am I one of the only teenagers that happily does not want an Ipod?

Waste o' money I say. Plus I can't work the thing worth crap.

- Steve Hill - 09-28-2005 03:56 AM

Not sure what you were trying to say in that last sentence, but they certainly are worth the money. I know a lot of people going for mp3 players that don't want an iPod because everybody else has one and they want to stand out. I personally think that's a lame reason to go for another brand and almost every person I know that does buy a Creative, Sony, iRiver or such ends up regretting it. They aren't as easy to use, their battery life and storage capcities are almost always quoted at a lower quality, so people feel cheated, they often don't have anywhere near the number of features and if they have problems, it's hard getting them sorted out because everyone is around helping iPod owners, but the othjers barely get a look in, (and apple make it rediculously easy to repair software problems and diognose hardware faults).

I would say to all asking for them for Christmas though, hold off for a month and see if the video iPod gets launched in time for the holiday. It is suspected it could be launched on October 7th, but could be as late as early November. It will be a lot more expensive, but I know a lot will look at it and wish they had held on.

- Ohm - 09-28-2005 04:24 AM

iPod video? I'm glad I've been saving my money then! My parents gave me about $150 for my birthday to save up for an iPod, and I've put in about $200, so I could afford one right now. Something has just told me to wait.

But an iPod video would be FANTASTIC! Now I'm really glad I'm waiting.

And just so I don't buy an iPod video right before a better model comes out, is there any place that anyone knows of that has information on when iPod releases new products? I can't find anything on the apple.com... is it hidden deep into the boon docks of the Apple website?

- Steve Hill - 09-28-2005 04:52 AM

It will get announced on the same day they start shipping. Keep an eye on macrumors.com for latest developments. One example is the iPod nano. That was announced three weeks ago today, we got our first batch about the same time as most other stores, which was within a week. Apple don't tend to announce months in advance, but days before they are available. The only exceptions of late were announcing their switch to x86 intels and the release of OSX 10.5, Leopard, both of which will be around as of next June/July.

If you wait for the video iPod, you could be waiting a week, a month, or even a year. Rumours fly around all over the place for them, but nothing is ever 100% until the very last minute.

This Christmas I would like to adopt another sugar glider. Icky needs a friend.

- ImTheFloor - 09-28-2005 11:38 AM

I don't hate Ipods, I just want to go down as a CD collector (like vinyl collectors now) as the format gives way to MP3s.

I dunno, I just like CDs better.

o do I, that's why I listen to CDs at home, play them in the car and import them into iTunes to sync with my iPod so I can play on the go too. It's an additional item to CDs for most, not a replacement.
