You make valid points there, Venus......however.....the wastebasket theory, while sound and well thought out, becomes flawed when you bring dogs into the equation. Their keen sense of smell, coupled with that undeniable lust for blood can quickly cause said discretion to fly right out the window, with the resulting mess typically being spread evenly throughout the entire house in what would almost seem an act of total defiance. You know dogs........

These days, as I've opted to become a born again virgin, I don't grapple with this dilemma any longer.....but back in the day, my final solution ended up being an old Maxwell House Master Blend coffee can with the plastic snap on lid with an attached sign reading:

They haven't done it in awhile, as I've learned to shut the bathroom door when I have my period. Their keen sense of smell, coupled with that undeniable lust for blood can quickly cause said discretion to fly right out the window, with the resulting mess typically being spread evenly throughout the entire house in what would almost seem an act of total defiance. You know dogs........

These days, as I've opted to become a born again virgin, I don't grapple with this dilemma any longer.....but back in the day, my final solution ended up being an old Maxwell House Master Blend coffee can with the plastic snap on lid with an attached sign reading:

pretty much true on all counts already, DR.....flip flops are my second set of feets, I can mimic anything from bad accents to Roger Waters' fine singing voice.....however, I do have to draw the line on snags/sausages. Ready to rip anyone's head off who might be foolish enough to try testing me today at work. Biggest golf tournament of the year today, requiring complete focus and concentration to detail. Yesterday was truly a by the book Friday The 13th, and I found myself feeling more like a kindergarten babysitter than a manager of supposed professionals. Any repeat performance today will prove most unfortunate for any one of them.....

Ok, I wasn't going to share this story, but I just can't help it...
I'm almost 39 and I've had dogs all my life, at least 3 at any given time when I was growing up, and mostly all males too, and in all these years we NEVER had ANY of them do what you all are describing. Until YESTERDAY, believe it or not! My current brat of a dog (a 15-month old bernese mountain dog) will raid a trash can every chance he gets, like every time you leave the room... he just loves to eat tissues, napkins, paper towels, or of course actual food if he's lucky enough to find it. If anyone has any tips on how to break him of this bad habit, I'm all ears... in the meantime we just keep a gallon jug full of water on top of the lid of the kitchen trash can (that works) and we've trained ourselves to keep the bathroom and bedrooms doors closed at all times. In the year we've had him he's managed to sneak a snack out of a trash can many times, but we never had any, um, "jellyroll" incidents. Well yesterday morning someone left the bathroom door open by mistake before they left the house, and I woke up later to find the contents of the bathroom trash can scattered all through the hallway... yes, contents of the jellyroll variety... or I should say about half the contents, because he'd eaten the other half... yuck! That same morning he'd also eaten about half of a handtowel... I forgot to mention he also likes to eat things like socks, dishrags, towels, the occassional edge of a blanket... and I don't mean shred up into a mess on the floor, I mean EAT, for the most part WHOLE too. Every time this happens I hold my breath til we see it come out one end or the other, because we really don't need a bowel obstruction and a big vet bill, and sometimes this can take days. So anyway, a while after he ate his supper last night, he barfed up a HUGE pile which included at least one whole, intact, rolled up, bloody pad, plus other tidbits too... gross! But that's not all folks... when he took his crap this morning I ended up having to pull the towel out of his ass (not the first time this has happened either)... it was not a pleasant experience for either of us, believe me! The things we dog lovers will go through, huh? Well anyway, he must be feeling a LOT better now, and I'm feeling relieved, and pretty amused by the timing, considering this thread. Now I just wish he'd grasp that correlation between cause and effect... but no, instant gratification always wins out (I can can relate, Iko). And I can't stay mad at him for more than like a minute because he's way too cute and I love him so much... in fact I often have to fake anger to get my point across when he's been bad... and he backtalks me all the time too, the little brat. :p

By the way, a while back someone here (was it you, DOV?), maybe even in this current mood thread, posted about their parents' golden retriever having hip dysplasia. I meant to offer this information back then but kept forgetting to get the information together. Bernese mountain dogs are genetically prone to dysplasia and similar problems of many different joints, and I'd often noticed a funny wobble to Iko's walk, so I asked my vet to x-ray him while he was under anesthesia to be neutered... well it turned out she didn't even have to go to the expense of the x-rays, she could tell just by rotating and manipulating his hips, shoulders, elbows, knees and wrists that he has problems. His hips are pretty bad, especially his left (which is why his left leg sometimes wobbles when he walks, I guess it's slipping out of the socket a little with each step), and his front knees and/or wrists are bad... and I suspect more is bad too. Luckily he does not seem to be in any pain or bothered by this at all, at least for now, but I worry about him getting older. Anyway, what I wanted to share was the advice my vet gave me... she said that giving your dog supplements of glucosamine hydrochloride, sodium condroitin sulfate and ascorbic acid, while still young and continued throughout life, can make a big difference. There is a product called Cosequin DS, and I'm sure there's others brands too... they aren't cheap, but you can save some money by buying them through a pet supply catalog like Omaha Vaccine Company or Doctors Foster and Smith (look for them online) instead of through your vet. And it's worth it compared to the cost and stress of surgeries. These are the dosages my vet told me for a dog of about 90 lbs:

first 4-6 wks after that each Cosequin DS tablet contains
glucosamine hydrochloride 1500 mg 500-1000 mg 500 mg
sodium condroitin sulfate 1200 mg 400-800 mg 400 mg
ascorbic acid 99 mg 33-66 mg 33 mg

I hope that's helpful to your parents, or to somebody out there. And by the way, my parents and sister are golden retreiver people too... great dogs!
