Which song shows Nick's best drumming?

- Interstellar_Overdrive - 10-17-2004 02:20 PM

One of these days.

Especially on live in pompeii. rocker

- Old_SChool_Punk - 10-23-2004 10:12 AM

My favourite drums by him would have to be IN THE FLESH baby, oh yaaah rocker

- Old_SChool_Punk - 10-23-2004 10:14 AM

or even Run Like Hell...good rythm....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Gilmour00 - 10-27-2004 01:41 PM

One Of These Days....but like you said, Run Like Hell has good rythm to it.

- Eatapeach164 - 10-27-2004 01:46 PM

yea man I agree, In the Flesh is a cool one along with Run Like Hell, but also Time has a really good one.

- Old_SChool_Punk - 10-29-2004 07:13 PM

Dont listen to Time very much, only a phew times...hmm :music:

- Interstellar_Overdrive - 10-31-2004 06:51 PM

^ one of the best underrated songs in PF history.

But yeah, now that i think about it, that song DOES have great drums...

I usually don't notice because i'm playing along with the guitar. Fun times...

- Old_SChool_Punk - 10-31-2004 07:12 PM

I've never even heard that song :Oo:

- Ebony - 11-01-2004 06:10 AM

- The_Madcap - 12-04-2004 06:35 PM

"One of these days," but I also like the outro of "The happiest days of our lives" leading into "Another brick in the wall pt. 2." It sounds really cool. :D

Live At Pompeii...

I know I said "One Of These Days"....but after thinking about it. His drumming on Paint Box is pretty damn good and should be right up there with the others.

He is very much underrated as a drummer.

- Kuvienhaistelija - 01-08-2005 11:50 AM

- FreakyChild13 - 01-08-2005 09:08 PM

Time ... by far the best

- Skavenger - 01-24-2005 09:36 AM

Time was good, no doubt. But I still hang with ASFOS.

- Pink Floyd Echoes - 01-26-2005 07:26 PM

I voted Time but if it were on there I would have voted for What Shall We Do Now off of Is There Anybody Out There. That is Mason at his best.

- moodyblue - 01-27-2005 07:33 PM

I voted for 'Set the Controls'...not just because I like that song....Nick's drumming is also good on 'Time'......

- AmazingPudding - 02-18-2005 05:11 PM

lotsa good ones on there. i like one of these days of course. also the saucerful on pompeii he does an awesome job, crazy speed goin on. and i like money cuz of the 7/8 time signature. beat sounds great!

Good choice, I voted for One Of These Days, but given the chance whould have said Run Like Hell. With great talent like that it's always a tough call. Cool

The Great Gig In The Sky

some amazing, AMAZING drumming there... really gives it the emotion it has.

- rolanddoe - 01-25-2006 01:53 AM

The Pompeii version of Set the Controls.

- division boy in the sky 05 - 02-01-2006 05:25 AM

His best drumming is on the song Hot River from the Fictitious Sports lp
but with floyd: What do you want from me hammers

- Stone Magnet - 02-05-2006 02:02 PM

Echoes (Live At Pompeii).

- Lost_Memories - 02-08-2006 04:36 PM

One of These Days is the best. End of story.

- sjmcd - 02-18-2006 02:59 AM

i voted the grand vizier's garden party as he uses the drums really imaginatively and experimentally - but if it were there I would have voted for the london 1966-1967 version of interstellar overdrive rocker

- Components-A - 03-19-2006 05:39 PM

I picked Careful With That Axe Eugene but every song on that list has great drumming, i really love the drumming on Fat Old Sun a lot,....aww man, there are too many good songs.... :music:

- Wings on the Pig - 04-05-2006 04:43 AM

One of these Days at Pompeii shows amazing drumming from Nick. It is a coincidence though - he explains in Inside Out that one of the tapes broke and all they were able to show was the drumming. Good coincidence!

- Asherman - 07-10-2006 01:46 PM

time personally

- floydian72 - 07-10-2006 02:22 PM

i voted one of these days. close race i see

- IbanezIsTheColour - 07-10-2006 07:04 PM

I normally listen for the guitar parts not the drum parts, but i chose One of These Days, because that one stands out to me

- the piper99 - 08-13-2006 11:46 AM

i think the live version of one of these days at "live at pompeii" is his best

- the piper99 - 08-13-2006 11:50 AM

one of these days from live at pompeii

- Funky Dung - 08-13-2006 05:30 PM

Mostly everything on Live At Pompeii. I also enjoy his work on the studio versions of LTBML, Set The Controls, & ASOS.

- floydfan - 08-14-2006 02:59 AM

I've always loved his drumming on "the happiest days of our lives", and with no doubt the drumming on "what shall we do now" especially the mid section, kicks ass. he is not a very technical drummer, but he know how to rock hard!

- The_Marching_Hammers - 10-30-2006 04:01 PM

He owns at Time, his drumming is par tof what makes that song so brilliant.

- sjmcd - 10-31-2006 03:29 AM

It says I've already voted but I don't remember voting... anyway I say TGVGP2.

- drk229 - 11-04-2006 01:49 PM

I say one the run or Set the Controls for The Heart of The Sun
on the run shows wicked good indurance
but set the controls... is just brilliant

That was actually a tape loop. Nick probably only played a few seconds of it and it was then looped. He didn't play the entire time. Although on Roger's recent tour, the drummer, Graham Broad, played it for the entire length of the song.

- drk229 - 11-05-2006 11:21 AM

dang it! Oh well its shows Graham Broad's endurance (sorry im not a fantastic speller!)

- Ezekiel - 12-31-2006 03:50 AM

I must say that Nick is absolutly fantastic on Echoes, espesially live in Pompeii. It's incredible to watch him drum.

- stir_of_echoes - 01-02-2007 08:55 PM

that is true.

- monkey.choker - 01-03-2007 02:26 PM

That was a tough one between Money and One Of These Days.

OFTD is absolutely awsome and the song woyld be rubbish without the drums as they are.

Money wins it due to the intensly weird drum beat itself. Not many people know, but I guess that you all do, that it is done in 7:4 timing. I aked my friend to tap along to it and they all lost their place as it goes 1,2 1,2 1,2,3

Magic!!

I don't think that was the case. I think it was a built-in hi-hat sound on the synth they (Roger and Dave) were using. I don't think Rick or Nick played on On The Run at all.

:D Proof link

I say One of These Days. On Pompeii it is incredible.

- whong - 01-17-2007 05:44 PM

Lots of great moments to listen for with Nick, including all of those mentioned. "Time" is probably my favorite, followed closely by "One Of These Days". He tears it up pretty well towards the end of "Dogs" too.....after the line "You believe at heart everyone's a killer".

- mabewa - 01-20-2007 12:47 AM

Quote:hehe fat old sun's drumming isn't Nick Mason's work, it David Gilmour's drumming.

I wouldn't necessarily call a Wikipedia article "proof," but since the Pink Floyd Encyclopedia says the same thing, I think it's very likely true.

That David Gilmour is good at a lot of instruments; Roger Waters once joked that some of the bass-playing awards he's won should have gone to David--people often say "Man, Roger Waters plays great bass on Pigs 3DO/Hey You/Young Lust, etc," but those parts (and others) were actually Gilmour. The version of "Money" on "A Collection of Great Dance Songs" is said to be Dave playing EVERYTHING except for the sax, which is Dick Parry.

I'm pretty sure that's also Dave on drums (and everything else) on "The Narrow Way," too.

David plays bass on Pigs 3DO?

I've been calling that Roger's finest bass moment. Since I found out Hey You was Gilmour.

Lol

Something interesting I've noticed about the bass on Another Brick In The Wall part 2 is that on the album it includes a low D, while live it's played on a four-string with standard tuning and so replaces the low D with one an octave above. On the original, was it played on a five-string bass or just a four-string with the E string detuned by a tone?

BASSically (get it!!), he plays bass on all the songs with good bass parts in them.

Individually, One Of These Days (Danny Carey has been emulating that song his whole career!) but I voted Set The Controls because I feel that his drumming on the whole album ASOS stands out. He was really on his mark in 68.

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - flaming_pie - 05-19-2008 12:12 PM

"A Saucerful Of Secrets" off of Pompeii.
Nick kills that entire concert on drums.
He's amazing.

I voted for Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun on Live At Pompeii. Could have easily been A Saucerful Of Secrets from Live At Pompeii or any of the other choices.

Thanks to everyone for voting! The poll will stay open! Please vote if you have not already! Thumbsup

I love Nick's drumming on 'Time' so I voted for 'Time'...

His drumming is amazing on both 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' and 'One Of These Days.'

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - Sun Controller - 02-01-2009 01:22 AM

Difficult to choose just one song as always,

Astronomy Domine is great on all levels. I would love to drum to this song (I used to be a drummer; the skins are are beckoning me back)
One Of These Days. Especially the P.U.L.S.E. version.
Run Like Hell.
Plus many more.....

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - aliciavlnf4 - 02-01-2009 08:45 AM

Another song that has Nick's best drumming is 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk.'

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - PWLM - 04-27-2009 04:31 AM

Loved 'ASOS', also 'Atom Heart Mother' despite the fact that the timing was less than perfect, the fact that it was recorded in one sitting and still has so much colour is a credit to the man.

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - Lostinthewall6 - 04-27-2009 06:25 AM

Hmm i've gotta go with ASOS, the drumming a few minutes in is brilliant

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - Mr. Mojo Risin' - 04-27-2009 03:25 PM

I really like the tempo change on Money, but I think it's more because of the way it goes along with the song than the drumming quality (if such thing exists).

I think most people vote for One of These Days(the Pompeii version) because you have this visual of Nick flailing about like a crazed Keith Moon. (The best part is when he loses the drumstick and has to grab another!!!)

I love the drums on The Nile Song. Correct me if I am wrong, but the reason they sound so in your face is because they were miked improperly when the song was recorded.

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - quicksilver - 11-10-2009 11:49 AM

Out of the songs listed I would choose Money. The odd time signature forces him to play a bit out of his comfort zone, and he does a great job. However, my favorite songs are like Us & Them, Breathe, Shine on, CNumb.... The steady beat with the occasional fill. Those song define him as a drummer.

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - n3wb0rn - 11-15-2009 06:37 PM

The fade out of Comfortably Numb is honestly the only time I've noticed his drumming being interesting - he seems pretty basic at what he does.

RE: Nick's best drumming - Which song shows Nick's best drumming? - quicksilver - 11-16-2009 12:10 PM

Nick's drumming suits the band and the music rather well. I suppose it could be viewed as basic by some; but a trap a lot of drummers fall into, is that they include unecessary notes whenever there's room. "Unecessary" is subjective I guess....... Guys like Neal Peart and Stu Copeland thrive on that and it fits that particular musical well. I'm a fan of both those guys....

There's so much opportunity in Pink Floyd's music for Nick to add in additional notes and such. The fact that he doesn't is a credit to him really......

Also, the middle section of Scream Thy Last Scream has probably the fastest of Nick's drumming with the possible exception of some live versions of ASOS.

Nick is a severely underrated drummer. I think because it wasn't necessary that he be Bonham/Moon/Peart, he gets overshadowed. He's kind of like Charlie Watts in that respect.

The drummer holds the whole thing down. I think a lot of people forget that.

The drummer holds the whole thing down. I think a lot of people forget that.

I think Nick's style fits perfect with the rest of the band. It would sound weird and out of place with Ginger Baker style drumming on Dark Side of the Moon or Animals. Their music was never about virtuosity in the first place...
