yes acoustic is good to start off with because after playing it and switching to electric you'll notice your bends or vibratos or watever are so much better.

that makes sense ..after all electric guitars have smoother strings and there just easier to play..but if you put electric strings on an acoustic..well then thats awesome rocker

I'm currently trying to teach myself how to play guitar, and I've been so confused as to how to start. I just played tabs for awhile, but I doubt that's the proper way to go about learning. How about learning scales? Is that a good first step?

Scales, start reading simple tabs, and get used to chords.

I was told by some ass at Guitar Center to buy the Guitar Grimoire, but it's so complicated I can't read the damn thing. I went and bought an easier scale book by Mel Bay. I love playing my electric, but sometimes it feels so hopeless. The egotistical lead guitarist in me is dying to break out already (just kidding...)

Can I teach myself how to play quitar? How do I start? Please don't suggest lessons. I am a bit of a recluse and I want to teach myself. Any advise would be appreciated.

Hello wiez. Check the earlier posts on this thread. They`re quite useful.
If you`re a complete beginner, & want to teach yourself, get a basic guitar chord book to start with (you can play a song with just 3 chords) & see how you go.
I`d recommend an acoustic guitar, to start with. It actually takes more strength to hold down chords on an acoustic guitar than an electric, as the strings tend to be further away from the fret-board. However, the necks tend to be wider on acoustic guitars, so you`ll have more room to form your fingers into (what will seem at first) very difficult positions.
Chord shapes will seem impossible at first, but stick with it.
You`ll be surprised how "natural" they can become through practice.
Personally, I wish I`d taken lessons when younger, instead of struggling through on my own. So if you decide that you want to take it further, don`t be worried about taking lessons.
You have to start somewhere.
When I learnt piano, I decided to take lessons. This broadened my musical knowledge & actually helped me on guitar.

Being a bit of a recluse can be an advantage - no problem with long hours of practice!!
