question on tone (related to fat old suovern solo)

Hi, I wonder how one can obtain a clean tone on high notes as well as some distortion on low notes (as in the fat old sun solo for example :when the sound is very clean on the high bends and yet a bit dirty or fuzzy when played on the low strings) ? I tried adding some distortion : it' s ok for the low notes but it's too much crispy on the high bends.
Do stompboxes like the over-expensive treble booster have to do with this kind of sound ?
