That makes perfect sense. Fans would like a accessibility of TDB, where the critics would like something a little deeper lyrically like The Final Cut. I really believe fans had had enough of the war/father theme by then and wanted something different after The Wall.

Yeah, not to mention the downright rockiness of AMLOR. What a relief! Phew! Biggrin

And now the final solution can be applied.

RE: The most overrated album
Judging by the album sales, I'd say Division Bell and AMLOR are overrated.
Meddle, TFC, AHM, OBC, and ASOS are better albums yet they didn't sell as well as those two.

Unsure with this one. Pink Floyd is one of these bands that has such a diverse range of musical styles, albums and themes. Personally, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a BIT overratted. That's not to say it's rubbish. It was certainly right for the time, but now seems a TAD dated. I am by no means saying this is a throw away and should be forgotten, but listening to it recently, it is very firmly stuck in the 1960's. Maybe that's great for some fans and not for others. I just don't think it warranted a 40th aniversary edition.
Despite my negative comment, strangely I honestly do enjoy it from time to time. But it's not the monumentual masterpiece it says it is.

I think The Wall studio album's pretty overrated, DSOTM is pretty close behind it though

RE: The most overrated album
Honestly? The Wall. Personally, I never liked the album as a whole. There are about 5 or 6 songs on the album I love, the rest are just.....no. It's as unpopular an opinion I would think, since it's their biggest selling album here in the States, but both The Wall and The Final Cut for me are just completely unlistenable on almost every level. Pink Floyd were best when there was some semblance of a balance between the lyrics and the music and those two albums are waaaaaay too far on one end of the spectrum for me. To that end, I can understand how people may not like AMLOR and The Division Bell since in some ways they just as extreme, just going the other way. I happen to love both those albums and think they are in some ways, very underrated.

DSOTM is in my view, the perfect album.

Welcome to the boards! Although I must tell you, I think you got the premise for this thread wrong. We're talking about Pink Floyd albums here, not albums from other bands as well.

RE: The most overrated album
You also have to remember the context within which we are speaking. We are all huge Floyd nerds here, right? Well I am at least. I am definitley far from a casual fan.

Dark Side was one of my faves when I was first getting into the Floyd, but now that I have discovered More, Ummagumma, Obscured by Clouds... DSOTM pales in comparison.

Now I will only listen to my vinyl copy whem I am in the mood. Which is rare.

DSOTM is not overrated...it is overplayed.

100% agree on one aspect of that. I think the problem is people are confusing overrated with overplayed. Overrated implies the album is not as good as the hype or what people have said about it over the years, while overplayed implies that the saturation point for that particular piece has reached its zenith.

The album itself is not overplayed, rather the song Money is. I've never heard any other song off that album on the radio. The "classic rock" station in my area plays the song about 6-7 times a day. I think that can make people hate the album, the same as I know a lot of Eagles fans that hate Hotel California. When you hear a song enough and you're beaten over the head with it, you can begin to hate the album its on, even if you never hear anything else off of it.
