okay maybe it's just me but i've listened to 'arnold layne', 'astronomy domine', 'jugaband blues', 'see emily play' and 'interstellar overdrive' and i fail to see what every one means when they say syd's lyrics were really dark... where is all the raw pain everyone keeps talking about? they seem quite lively to me, uppitty even... i find the later floyd work to be much darker, i mean 'one of these days'? come on! also have you seen the video for 'arnold layne' they just seem to be having a LOT of fun! was that song really supposed to be about a real transvestite?

I agree with you Confortably Numb and GuitarFreek, his solo albums are a bit darker in their poetry, songs like 'Dark Globe' (From 'The Madcap Laughs') and 'Wolfpack' (From 'Barrett'). In terms of Pink Floyd, I feel that 'Jugband Blues' is one of the most emotional, tragic songs, Syd telling the world that he now knows that he's lost his mind.

The lyrics for Vegitable Man are dark and somewhat horrifying. Especially since that is how Syd thought of himself as. :(
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
Lois don't be alarmed-but I think I'm Jesus

I don't really think of that when I hear the lyrics. If anything, it sounds to me the sort of thing you would say to an ex-lover who is moving on without you. Maybe he is referring to the band? IDK It sounds exactly like a heartbroken song to me, not a song about madness.

Yeah, that's another way of seeing it. We all give our own special meaning to the songs. I assume that the line "And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here" is Syd's way of acknowledging to the people around him that he's confirmed their rumors, that's he's no longer in his right mind. I also see "And the sea isn't green, and I love the queen, and what exactly is a dream, and what exactly is a joke?" as Syd saying that he's unable to differentiate reality from his illness and has trouble grasping normal concepts.

i also take special notice in "what exactly is a dream, and what exactly is a joke?"
I believe it has something to do with the future of the band, asking if its some dream come true or some prank to ruin him. I think it ties into the jugband theme of syd losing it.

perhaps the darkness in his lyrics is really how bright they are? i think he was using the brightness of his lyrics to allude to some dark reality, that the happiness and sanity was leaving.
Ex: See Emily Play:
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for May
See Emily play
^ "You'll lose your mind and play" - you will become insane, "try it another way"
Put on a gown that touches the ground, ah ooh
Float on a river forever and ever, Emily, Emily
^ Allusion to a burial ground, and dead floating in a river (ie. hope)
