I had heard the story surrounding Wish you were here( First got into Pink floyd a little after DSotM was released...Bought WYWH when it was released, so this is @1975...First time I had heard of Syd/his story...Then got a copy of Relics..and Loved the early sound, Arnold/Emily..Then bought Piper and loved most of that, especially Bike..(Still one of my Favs)..Then heard about Syds Solo stuff, Saw a copy of Barrett in the record store, bought it, then Madcap...LOVED the acoustic whimsy stuff( I've always been a big Fan of early Marc Bolan/Tyrannasaurus Rex/T.Rex)..fitted his songwritting better than the psychedelic sound, IMHO( this is still all in the late 70's vinyl era)....Octopus and Baby Lemonade became 2 of my favorite songs of all time..Started to enjoy Syd's Solo stuff MORE than his work with Pink Floyd..I still do..He may have written a few more accessable songs for Pink Floyd, but His Solo albums, for me anyway are the way to really hear what he's saying/doing..In my mind Syd really did "better work" on those 2 albums than anything other than a few great tunes w/ Pink Floyd..I don't know how to explain it..I enjoy his solo stuff more than his Pink Floyd stuff I guess..I like the simple acoustic approach "Keep it Jangley" you know...bought the Syd Box when it came out and Madcap has been in my changer continuously since, I can't say that for any other record by anyone

The first Syd Barrett music I ever heard was the song Interstellar Overdrive which my brother had downloaded onto our computer. I liked it so unbelieveably much that I went out and bought Piper At The Gates Of Dawn shortly afterwards. There was a period in my life where everyday after school I would smoke weed at 4:20 and listen to Radiohead's Kid A album while I was smoking then PATGOD afterwards. :;):

My dad was listening to the Echoes Compilation Album and I heard Bike - it really caught my attention. My dad told me about Syd and I was quite interested. Then I listened to the Big Five (I include Meddle in there) and loved them, sort of forgot about Syd. I was a bit hesitant about listening to Piper as I thought it was just going to be weird music, but I listened to it and absolutely lived it - here I am now.
Shine on Syd!!

Well, i was always listening to floyd my whole life, and im rather young (16) so everythings happened recently. As a kid id listen to DOTSOM, but thought most of it was weird but kinda liked its "spaceyness" as i thought of it then. At about 13 i got into rock and roll, and i started listening to floyd, but never really loved them, but over time, i decided to get the album MEDDLE, and i was hooked.
I love Floyd and decided to get a name on this message board, and when i got on, it had the member list, and i was like, who the **** is Syd Barret? So i looked him up and was fascinated with the story of him and early floyd. Early floyds a completely different band than later Floyd.
Youre one of a kind. Just like everybody else.

I was a great fan of acid and loved playing guitar, while out of my mind, (which everyone thought I did much too often) with records particularly Floyd. I stumbled upon a brief reference to Syd, an aside really, in a magazine article about the mid 80's lawsuit fiasco. I always thought the warnings of too much LSD too often to be absolute crap. I bought TML and Barrett and was overcome. They were brilliant, a man totally baring his soul with no thought whatsoever of revealing his demons, feelings, pain and thoughts. The wordplay alone was beautiful. I thought he wrote with no concern about what the listener may derive from his songs. He put it out there and let each person glean from it what they wished. I think that is how he spent the last half of his life. Interpret how he lived in any way you want, he lived his life with no concern for anyones wishes for it but his own. If being an "acid casualty" can give you a more admirable way of approaching life . I wish I'd done more.

RE: How did you first get into Syd? - We, the exclusive club :)
Sept '78. I had "the big 4" as stated above & my parents got me a copy of "Nice Pair" for Xmas. Opened it up & saw the name "Barrett", wondering who this guy was. Never heard of him b4, I thought. Played the album & thought" whoa, what is this??. Anyway, I didn't touch it for 6 months or so & happened to put it on when I had taken some lysergic chemicals & thought that it was the best thing since the wheel. Since then I have alot of the books on him, posters, CD's, etc & he has basically become my god. Don't do the chemicals anymore & he STILL sounds great. Trying to get my daughter to listen but she, at the tender age of 11 prefers "Whacko Jacko". Always wondered why I couldn't find any females who dug his music; they all thought he was gorgeous but "Too weird", my wife's words. Any thoughts ladies!?!
