Pinks Pig Wrote:Poor Syd always getting classed as the lunatic.
Roger does sing about lunatic and lunatics(plural)
The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
About these lines Roger does say that he can't understand why in England on some nice clean cut grass there are signs saying KEEP OFF THE GRASS.In Roger's home town there is such a piece of well cut grass. Can't really remember but i think Roger did say that he saw Syd on this grass, not sure will have to check up on that.
This can also mean aurthity, aurthity saying your not allowed on clean cut grass.
The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more
These next lines are about people in aurthity like politicians.
The faces of the lunatics are in newspapers, newspapers are folded neatly before they are delivered by the paper boys.
Politicians walk in hall ways of power and when the paper boy brings Roger his paper they are now in his hall way.
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me.
These lines are the best Roger ever wrote in my eyes, i wont even try to explain them.
You pretty much said what I was about to say. Just a few more things...
With "The lunatic is on the grass" Roger always wondered why they had a perfect patch of nice green grass, but to then put a display sign on it warning people not to play on it or walk on it etc. He couldn't understand the logic of it. And if you were to walk on it, you'd be looked down upon - like you were some sort of lunatic.
With "The lunatic is in my head" it could be referring to how he can't get Syd out of his head. That Syd somehow has something to do with almost everything Roger does. It maybe referring to how once, Roger (and the rest of the band) were in Studio 1 at Abbey Road. Roger then went down to get a snack or something and had what he can only describe as a nervous breakdown. He thought this was it, that he had gone insane. Everything was different to him. The world around him was drastically different. He felt pain, but it wasn't really pain, he was receeding. Also, his hands felt like two baloons. He then decided to go back up in the control room, and he played the piano for a bit and then everything got back to normal again. The whole thing lasted 5 minutes. This is what he basically talks about in Comfortably Numb, but I don't remember whether this happened before or after recording The Dark Side of the Moon.
Btw, it's "authority" :;):
Also, I can't for the life of me figure out how someone would think Sheep is the worst PF song. I mean everything about it is genius. It's one of my favourite songs, and it's inclusion in Animals is one of the reasons why on a lot of days I can't choose between WYWH or Animals as my fav album.
The lyrics on WYWH weren't as good as Animals, but were still bloody brilliant. I think it was musically superior to anything else the Floyd did.

"but I don't remember whether this happened before or after recording The Dark Side of the Moon."
That happened before I read about it in the making of the pink floyd masterpiece.

monkey.choker Wrote:They are fantastic lyrics, but my favourite are the ones I have as my signature:
And then one day you find
Ten years have gone behind you.
No-one told you when to run,
You missed the starting gun.
BRILLIANT
It's actually "And then one day you find ten years have got behind you".

And these next two lines sum it all up nicely.
The time is gone the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say..
Brain Damage is my favourite song on this album, but Time does come very close to it though.

pinkfloydmadchris Wrote:Even though I agree that in a way it is sort of based on Syd, I also feel that Roger is referring to the politicians of the world in this song.
This is why every time this song is played in concert pictures of Thatcher (bitch), Regan and Chairman Mau appear on a huge screen behind them.
