I like PINK FLOYD, and I consider David Gilmour to have the greatest voice in rock history..................but

For some reason, it is Roger Waters that gives me the true "floydian" feeling. Watching the post Waters Floyd to me was missing something VERY important, but when I watch Roger Waters perform, it is Pink Floyd. His insane, emotional voice is impossible to replicate, although Gilmour's parts can be sung by other people. (NEVER AS GOOD, THOUGH) Another Brick in the Wall on Pulse??? Give me a break, it sounded empty. Comfortably numb is boring without Roger. I love Roger Waters, always have.

Well, he did have something to do with Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which is certainly one of the most critically acclaimed PF albums of all time. I mean, I'm kind of a junkie of the music press, magazines, record guides, all that stuff, and the PF albums that consistently get the highest ratings are DSotM, WYWH... and Piper. It's widely considered to be genius, and one of the most important albums of all time.

My favorite member is David Gilmour.

The thing I like the most about The Pink Floyd is the music. Of course, lyrics add so much to a song, but the main importance to me is the music and the lyrics come secondary.

As David Gilmour is responsible for most if not all of my favourite musical pieces by The Floyd, he has to be my favourite member.

Now, when it comes to albums, all members are essential to create the Pink Floyd sound. However, I prefer the stuff Gilmour does over the stuff the others do. In almost every single Pink Floyd track, I like Gilmour's contribution to the song more. I love The Pink Floyd electric guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, fretless bass and the singing, and seen as Gilmour does all of these, he is my favourite. Of course I like Roger's playing and singing, Rick's keyboard and Nick's drums, but for me, Gilmour stands out as the main man. I don't think there is any argument however when it comes to lyrics. Nobody can replace Roger. Roger is a genius. Although lyrics for me aren't as important as the music, they still add so much.

However, when it comes to live performances (when all the Floyd stuff has already been written and recorded) I think Gilmour is the most important (and maybe Rick as well) and definitely my favourite.I would pick Gilmours singing and playing over Waters' singing and playing, anyday of the week.

Sure, Pink Floyd would not have their sound without the other 3 involved too, but I think Gilmour's music is absolutely essential when it comes to performances live. I feel any good musician could fill Nick's and Roger's parts, but nobody can mimmick the David Gilmour sound.

I have heard and seen so many live performances now on video and I think Gilmour's performances are better than Waters'. I don't think Waters is absolutely essential when it comes to live performances. Afterall, Roger only provides the bass and sings (his voice not as good anymore though). Whereas Gilmour can sing beautifully and still has that brilliant sound. When I see other musicians filling in for Gilmour in Waters' concerts, it may sound good, but they're no Gilmour.

Recently I went to see David (and Rick, Dick Parry, Guy Pratt, Phil Manzanera etc.) perform at the Royal Albert Hall, and it was bloody mind-blowing. It sounded almost exactly like Floyd because the two most important members who are essential to create The Pink Floyd Sound on stage were present; in David Gilmour and Rick Wright. The drum parts and bass parts were done brilliantly and I didn't miss Nick's or Roger's playing. The only thing I missed was their presence.

I love how Gilmour plays the guitar. The echoes, bends and bluesy stuff that is ever so present in his work is absolute genius. Still, I think his work on the pedal steel is as good if not better than his guitar playing. I get goosebumps everytime I see him sit down at a pedal steel.

So in actually making the music, ALL Floyd members are essential where Gilmour is my favourite.

When talking about live performances, Gilmour is absolutely essential for me and is therefore my favourite.

Dude, first, I'm not trying to start a war, just reporting what I've experienced during a lifetime of being a music press junkie. Piper certainly hasn't sold as many copies as many other Floyd albums, but it certainly is one of their most critically acclaimed. In my experience, most critics put it up there with DSotM and WYWH, and over the Wall (the Wall isn't, by the way, one of the more critically acclaimed Floyd albums--it's more towards the middle of the pack).

Now, I'm not saying that the critics are right (personally, I agree with them about Piper, but I often disagree with critics about other albums). I'm just reporting what is a fairly objective fact: Piper has consistently been rated as one of the top three or four Floyd albums.

Agreed, mabewa. It always ranks up there, for both it's bold and groundbreaking ideas, and it's timing when it first came out. It hit the charts on the London scene at absolutely the perfect time.

It's a great album, and a real stand alone in the extensive Floyd catalog.....it's Syd's baby, all the way. The album has remained very inspiring to countless musicians over the years too.

It absolutely belongs in the top five Floyd releases! rocker
