Just who was Charlotte Kringles? Did she play with Emily?

A name stuck in a song like that is unusual - it must have some significance. Any ideas?

I could be wrong, but I always thought it was Charlotte Pringles.

But anyway, the song seems to be about an episode with a girl he met, and the line seems to be Goodbye to you, Charlotte Pringles due. So perhaps she's Charlotte, or someone called Charlotte is coming round to see him so the girl has to go before she gets there?

It doesn't seem to have too much in common with the dreamy innocent world of Emily.

To be honest, Mr. Wright probably just made that name up because it sounded good in the song. I'd suspect it had no significance at all. :)

it does say Charlotte Kringles and the song is about Floyd's tour in '68 and Rick reflecting on groupies and how empty the experiences with them were and a quasi-confession to his wife Juliette about his antics one the road, but I have never read anything else about Charlotte, perhaps it is a totally fictiocious name for alot of girls...

I always took it as meaning he slept with a groupie named Charlotte Pringle and got her pregnant.

Of course, we don't know for a fact what did or didn't happen...and I'd sooner chop off my own foot than ask!

As for "due", that could be meant multiple ways, including "she is due to arrive".

I should point out that it's a pretty major thing to start taking song lyrics as a statement of fact--especially when people start using it as a reason to accuse a person of something that is very serious. So let's please be careful with the speculation in cases like this--when you start getting into someone's private life, I think that's too far.

I agree 100% and I would like to re-phrase my statement that I have read that is what the song is about, but unless somewone asks him, which I would never do either, we'll never know...good point FloydWright!

That's a fair comment, but I think you would agree that the subject matter of the song suggests very clearly a casual empty encounter.

If that's the case, then making a public statement about it, such as writing it into a song, is making your private life public.

I just thought he was being refreshingly honest really, sometimes song lyrics ought to be taken at face value and accepted as true statements, especially when they are written in the first person and with an autobiographical 'feel' like this one has.

But you are right, it is mostly speculation unless he has spoken about it in interviews sometime. I'll happily edit my original post to remove the offending words.

The subject matter of the song does suggest an empty encounter which the narrator regrets later. I just don't think we as fans have enough information to say whether that's autobiographical or not. I also think we have to be careful about how far we go with such speculation--the last thing we want to do is be responsible for the beginning of some kind of unfounded rumor, especially with things that (most particularly in the case of one speculation) are quite serious.

I didn't think I would cause any controversy with my enquiry! I bought the CD not long ago in a moment of nostalgia (big brother had the LP when I was about 13). I could not work out all the lyrics (and there are quite a few decent lines especially in "If"- "If I were a good man, I'd talk with you more often than I do" "If I go insane, Please don't put your wires in my brain".) Finding the on-line lyrics is excellent, assuming they are all as originally written.
So it's: "Goodbye to you, Charlotte Kringles TOO, I've had enough for one day". She's not DUE anything.
Sounds like it was just time for her to leave...
