Gilmour/Samson - "On the Day The Wall came down/The Ship of Fools had finally run aground""...mmhh, well it`s not as generic as "war is bad..love is good"...but I`d argue that they lack a certain personal vision.

David and Polly do tend to play it safe with their lyrics. Unfortunately
they do wear thin after awhile. Good lyrics and good poetry are very similar in that you should be made to think and analyze the content. As much as I like David Gilmour, I don't have to do that with his solo work.

The Wall definitely has more moments of true greatness, but DB is far more consistent, and I can actually relate to its lyrics a lot better, even if of course the lyrics on The Wall are better-written.....while the playing on The Wall, while consistently excellent, is also rather generic, except for the guitar playing of course.
The music on The Wall is a little "generic", yes. Perhaps that`s the price paid for being such a complete conceptual piece....ie the music having to "bend" so much in order to not skew the narrative pacing, & lyrical format.
For me, the lyrics on The Wall touch me far more than those on TDB. If The Wall`s music is a little "generic", I`d argue that the lyrics on TDB may be accused of the same (something that the idiosyncratic Waters - however people feel about him - could hardly be accused of...ironically, it`s the very ungeneric nature of his lyrics which get on some people`s nerves).
Gilmour/Samson - "On the Day The Wall came down/The Ship of Fools had finally run aground""...mmhh, well it`s not as generic as "war is bad..love is good"...but I`d argue that they lack a certain personal vision.

I have one question:

Why did you capitalise "the wall" in those lyrics, when they aren't capitalised in the booklet? Are you suggesting that Dave/Polly are referring to Roger's "Wall"? Which seems like a likey source for the lyric, but denied by Dave.

Just a typo by me (I would never knowingly put anything in quotation marks that isn`t strictly accurate).
Having said that, there`s a dual-meaning in the lyrics. It`s clearly not only about the wall which divided East and West Berlin, but also a wall as a psychological barrier...judging by the lyrics, a metaphor for man-woman relationships mainly....but, I believe, hinting at Waters too.

I like your interpretation, Phil. That's what I was talking about in my earlier posts.

Of course, Roge and Daves legal and verbal issues were in Daves thoughts while all this was going on. I'm not going to say what was, "aimed," at Rog, but agree some was. There's another post on here, about Dave saying no more Floyd, and this really comes close in a way; well, it was without Rog, a different chapter, as it was after Syd. I've said before, I didn't like the "Wall," when it came out, as I was 13, and found it too negative, and perhaps it was too smart for me then, too. I've come to like some of the songs with age, but have never liked how negative it was (..listening to burning bridges now, nice singing Rog.) I thught jabs and all, it was an attempt to move away from the negative period that Floyd went through, musically and legaly. I found much of it uplifting, and being in my lat 20's, and a lost soul, it realy seemed to have something to say. From guys in their 50's then. Which is how it links to the no more concerts thread; what do you expect now? Dave's doing it how he see's fit, when and where, and lets the rest go. All the Floyd albums where different, people change. We didn't have the, "inter-web," back then, I can remember all my stoney fans, we ran out to grab this much awaited realease, made sure we had all the right trimmingsupsidedown sat in the dark, and took off, where it took us, many that night felt left behind, cheated. I found it more uplifting, more of a band-aid or apology for the 15 years of all the negative songs ( Final CutErmm) only two of us at that party, bought tix for the show. My 16yr. old brother bought some, too. He didn't know 'Floyd from Pinkie, but knew the cool cats would be going. I found the message even more uplifting than the CD. Of course it wasn't the best work, we'll NEVER agree on that. Now, we all wonder or whine that the lights are off, and the door is locked, and Dave's alone on his island. Its come full circle, we want MORE 'Floyd, and wonder why we are at this point.

I like the Division Bell alot. I've also fancied Piper. If I can get tix to Dave's concerts, I will go, and it won't be Floyd, and I don't expect it to be, and he dosen't feel it has to now, either. In all fairness, if Rog brings his DSOTM to America, I'll go to it, too.

"It is, what it is."

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever.

I purchased TDB a few days back. I like it (My favorite song is Poles Apart), but you can really sense that there is something important missing without Roger.
Bottom line, Pink Floyd is just not Pink Floyd without him.

Time it was and what a time it was, it was.

It's underrated, but not as good as others. I like it, though. When I'm in the mood for it, it's a good album. It just doesn't sound like the Floyd...

I like it
it's not my favorite PF album, but as PF albums go, it's a good one.
And even at their worst, PF is still lightyears better than a lot of other bands

I love it too. I have not heard of many fans saying it is the worst album or they don't like it. I have heard it about TFC and AMLOR, but not TDB. It's certainly one of the good albums.

There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact, it's all dark.
