It is definitely a good album. I don't know why the lyrics are criticized, that's one of the things that I thought they were able to get right this time around. I mean, the lyrics on momentary lapse are just appallingly bad, and I was afraid of a repeat. There not as good as anything Roger would have written, but that's to be expected. In every way it is light years ahead of momentary lapse. The music is solid throughout. My favs are Poles Apart (which I thought was all about Syd, I didn't think it had anything to do with Roger), Wearing The Inside Out (most people agree that this is one of the highlights, which is kind of odd considering most Wright songs suck), Keep Talking, and the best on the album was easily High Hopes. Lost For Words is about Roger, which is inevitable given the theme of the album, but I didn't think it was that harsh, I thought it was rather comical and lighthearted. The album totally holds together musically and has a solid concept backing the lyrics and presentation (something that wasn't even attempted on momentary lapse). Is it one of the great Floyd albums? No. Is it better than Piper? It doesn't even come close. But it doesn't have to. The best thing about this albums is that it's not overly ambitious, which is something that can't always be said about Roger's material.
So yeah, a good, but not great, Floyd album.
