When they first hit the US charts, I was in Jr. High, in the inner city. Our deal was they were for girls. My friends and I at the time actually liked them, but you had to keep that on the down low.

Never bought any of the music, but liked the melodies.

There once was somewhat of a stigma attached to Duran Duran. Back in the 1980's, many young girls were crazy go nuts for those boys which made us guys somewhat insecure and prone to make jokes about the sexual tendencies of the band members. Duran Duran was seen by many males as a group with very limited talent because it divided the attention of the females away from us.
My girlfriend thoughout the middle 80's was one of those girls who really liked the group and therefore, I was also introduced to their music. Some of it was not that bad and I was not completely ignorant or immature about her listening to them. I never told her that she could not idolize the band members or cut them down a great deal to make myself appear better than them; but I did resist a little.
A few relationships and some broaden outlooks of music later, I do have some Duran Duran in my collection. Arena, Duran Duran ('81), Duran Duran ('93), Rio and a compilation album. I just got a copy of Rio a few weeks ago because I got to thinking about their music, specifically "Hold Back The Rain" and "Lonely In Your Nightmare".
I am never ashamed of admitting to like or dislike any music.

Duran Duran, great name, another staple of the beginning of MTV. SOJ is so right, there was such a stigma attached to this band although like him, I've never been ashamed or embarrassed by liking or disliking any artist. I always thought they did what they did wonderfully, they could really rock sometimes. I was a bigger fan of Power Station, Robert Palmer was so much cooler than Simon!

I remember seeing Power Station on Saturday Night Live before I knew much about the band and was happy to see and hear the former Duran Duran guitarist stretch out and play some loud rock guitar featured in there cover version of "Bang A Gong (Get It On)". John Taylor and Andy Taylor I think were both involved in Duran and Power; John on bass and Andy on lead guitar if I am correct. And of course Roger Taylor, no not the guy from Queen was on drums for DD. That's a lot of Taylors to keep track of. I'm sure it was a bit confusing if ever Duran Duran and Queen played together in some Princes' Trust concerts or what have you.
Simon and Nick were the only DD members in Arcadia, without looking at that album. I also have Power Station's one album and Andy Taylor's solo release, Thunder.
I saw Duran Duran perform live in 1989 and again in 1993.

Please don't ban me for this, but I saw them live for the Seven and the Ragged Tiger tour.

I was dragged to the show by a girl.

I don't like Duran Duran, my parents do.. they're aweful, especially that "Rio"
