RE: What is your least favorite album?

Absolutely he does. Indeed, drummers in casual rock bands who only know how to repeat "boom tss tac tss" and some variants on it, are very obsolete to the music's actual sound. People like Nick Mason and Ringo Starr, who compose a different playing for each song and really put their signature on it, are as important as a good bass player. You may not really notice them, but you'd notice it'd be played by a worse drummer.

The intro to Time. 'Nuff said.

I can only imagine myself saying "You know, I never understood why a drummer would be appreciated. It has always been frustrating to me to know that drummers are easily replaced. Does Nick really contribute to the sound of the band?" over and over.
Anyway, yes, Ember, I know a drummer is essential in a band, I never said anything about that. But, why does it matter who the drummer is, is what I didn't understand.

Yes, yes, and hell yes. It just sounds like your typical drumming at first, but once the guitar and keyboard solos kick in... just amazing. Some of Nick's best, in my opinion. Yet Another Movie has some pretty powerful drumming as well.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in.

It matters because different drummers have different personalities, different taste in music, different bla bla....
Imagine Bill Bruford in PF, brilliant drummer, but completely wrong with how the rest of the band played. He would have changed the way Floyd sounded completely (if he got his way. )

The same reason why it matters who the guitarist is, or who the bassist is, or who any other member of the band is. Different people have different styles, approaches, and techniques when playing their instruments. For example, Joe Walsh is one of the greatest guitarists I've ever heard, but he'd never work in Pink Floyd, the same as David wouldn't have worked in the Eagles.
Nick has a specific sound and style when he's playing the drums that is perfect for Pink Floyd and the music they did. Any other drummer would not have that same sound and style, and thus the songs wouldn't sound the same.

I agree with Hunter: Intro to time. That will answer your question

ya xD Imagine if Nick Mason was replaced with Dave Lombardo (drummer of Slayer). It would sounds like a bird whisteling, the wind blowing, the trees moving, the river flowing (thumbs up for High Hopes reference) with a nuke going off in the background.
Roger Waters - The Wall Live. December 12th, 2011. Second Comfortably Numb guitar solo= best moment of my life!
