RE: bass or keyboard
Bass was always where I wanted to be since being a little kid. It has led me to many different projects and even producing and writing for other bands. Weird how so many Bassists do this kind of thing. Good luck with your music!!

I'm a little late on this discussion, but I have to agree with Tatersalad here. Laughs....

keys/piano will definitely help you with your knowledge of music theory and reading music. i learned to play piano when i was 7, and it really helped me as a musician. yes there aren't enough bassists, but keyboards is a better choice if you're just doing it for yourself.

RE: bass or keyboard
I play bass, and it was the first intrument to actually click for me, so I highly suggest it.
It's an instrument that you can start playing right away, without knowledge of chords or anything, then you can work your way to the more complicated stuff. That was my thing, I wanted to be able to start playing stuff right away, and bass was perfect for that.

You're nearly a laugh, but you're really a cry

learn the piano for a few years, and then all music will be making sense and then you can learn the bass in half the time.
