Cream inspired Pink Floyd to form. Little known trivia bit.
Jack Bruce mentions in latest Classic Rock that they, Cream played Regents Polytechnic & the guys from Floyd were in the audience & decided to form a band after watching cream play.

Said also that he met them recently & they again confirmed the story.

That's pretty cool. Although I can't find that much in common with the two bands. Although both amazing, they are mostly different in their styles, as can be heard on the two bands respective 1967 albums, Disraeli Gears and Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The former is a masterclass in blues and heavy rock improvisation, with the introduction of the now world famous Wah-Wah Pedal, and the latter with the amazing English whimsy and poetic nature of Syd Barrett.

However, that is a very good story . . .

Do any bands really have much in common with the Floyd? Not many. Which of course is why the Floyd are so genius. They have a sound all to their own.

No. They are very unique. But you could find other bands that are closer to their sound than Cream (ELP, King Crimson, Soft Machine, Yes e. t. c). I'm not saying they are extremely alike, but they are all very progressive and experimental, whereas Cream were more influenced by 50's blues artists and the like.

Right, I'm not saying that there aren't any other bands that sound somewhat like the Floyd. However, their sound is pretty unique to just them. Maybe a few other bands do sound a bit like them though.

I agree, Chris. I'm not positive, but I don't remember Nick Mason mentioning Cream in the book Inside Out. The story could still be true, and if so it's pretty cool, but maybe it's something the band doesn't want to be known? Maybe they wanted to avoid being compared to a different type of band when they first started so people would, at the time especially, think of them as being unique.

RIP Rick Wright - 7/28/43 - 9/15/08

Floyd gets it's influence from the Blues. Cream gets its influence from the blues. Makes sense.

Actually, I'd throw the MOody Blues on the same branch as Floyd.
