My favourite version is the one on Ummagumma. Also, in response to what a few people said, it wasn't really "intended" or "created" for any purpose, it was just that the band had some spare time in the studio at the end of the day and nothing to record, so they improvised a piece, called it "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" and tacked it onto the B-side of "Point Me At the Sky". The rest is history.

This is kind of off topic but I recently heard Point me at the Sky and have been reading about it, so does anyone know the story between Careful with that axe and point me at the sky? the character eugene is in both of em lol.

The live at pompeii one is brilliant...its truly a live song. Roger can scream quite amazingly.

There isn't one. Careful With That Axe, Eugene was improvised in spare studio time. I'm assuming the name Eugene was used because they'd been recording Point Me At the Sky so the name was fresh in their minds.

The Live at Pompeii version is great. But there's also a version from Earls Court in 1973 that is my ultimate favorite. I agree that it's better suited as a live piece.
