RE: The 100 million club. Rock bands that is.
chromeboomerang Wrote:Pretentious is about as far off the mark as one could get. Peart has done educational programs for kids & is very passionate about life & his lyrics refelect that. Lifesons guitar work is about as UNboring as one could get. Lifesons inventive & technically superb playing is anything but boring. That view is shallow & baseless & demonstrates a lack of musical appreciation & depth & is extraordinarily boring.
The previous poster expressed his opinion about the band that was brought up.
Posters aren't required to provide evidence to back up their opinions and shouldn't be put in a position where they have to defend them to any other poster. It's fine to disagree and discuss, but to call someone else's opinion shallow and baseless reflects poorly on you and invalidates your position. The rest of the statement is much akin to an attack unless you're a member of Rush and have grounds for taking things so personally.
Many artists are passionate about their lyrics and their art. This does not preclude them from pretentiousness, often it's quite the opposite.
And now the final solution can be applied.

Technically speaking, it does NOT invalidate my position. My opinion is that that view was poor. It is my view & right to express it.
EDIT:
It invalidates your position because it makes YOU look stupid. It is NOT your right to call people and their opinions names. You really should feel fortunate that your lack of respect for other posters isn't flamed more often, please cease this baiting behavior or just stop posting. It's really that simple.

It's not that I'm doubting their musicianship or anything (I know they're technically brilliant), I just find them plain dull and lifeless.
And I haven't even mentioned Lee's voice yet.
I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing

Another person from Australia who has never heard of Rush!
I remember this coming up a long time ago, when we had more Aussies here. Seems inconceivible to me that there are people in this world who have never heard of Rush. Never heard Working Man? Tom Sawyer? Fly By Night? Closer To the Heart? The Trees? The Spirit of Radio? Freewill? Come on, these are classic radio staples! Apparently Rush (like many bands) didn't tour Australia, but I still can't believe their hugeness went totally unnoticed. For god's sake, educate yourself... search those song titles on YouTube or something... and here's a good overview...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_(band) (Apparently I can't do a direct link... go down and click on "Rush (band), the Canadian rock band".)
And don't listen to the naysayers here... I mean they're entitled to their opinions, but they're wrong, haha ... Rush is awesome! I love everything from the early years up through the prog years, but they lost me in the early 80s with the synth stuff. The more recent stuff is more back to their old sound, but it doesn't move me the way the early stuff did (and still does). I can understand why some people have a problem with Geddy's voice, but I happen to like it... very powerful. And Neil's dumming... oh my god... I often get bored during drum solos, but he can go for 20 minutes and I'm on the edge of my seat... shoulda seen what I saw live last summer, wow! Actually ALL of them are masters at their instruments. The very definition of a "power trio".

I feel really ignorant now
I listen to a wide range of music, but I've just never heard of them. I've read a book called Rush if that counts lol. I'll go on youtube in a sec and check out some of the songs you suggested.

Wow
I listened Working Man, Fly By Night and Tom Sawyer. They're only three songs, but I think they're awesome. The lead singer sounds slightly like the lead the singer from The Skyhooks, just heavier. Great solos too. I could see myself buying one of their albums.
