Mr Wright's Gritty Organ Sound
Hi folks
Newbie here, mostly into Genesis keyboards (youtube: jumb0j0ck) but bounced off Pink Floyd many times over the years. Post mostly on the genesis-music Musicians' Corner forum. Glad I found this one.
I've been asked to play keys for a few Floyd songs but don't have a background in organs. I have a few presets and know what a drawbar is but was wondering how Rick got that sort of grating, gritty sound to the organ. You can hear it on DSOTM going into OTR and to a certain extent running into GGITS. The gradual cyclic change in volume I'm assuming is a Leslie speaker - any help anyone might offer would be gratefully appreciated. I'm using the EVB-3 organ that came with Logic 8.
I know that some might say, "Work it out for yourself," which is what I'm doing for the most part. I also know from experience that having spent weeks (months; years?) working out a tune, some might be loathe to part with all the effort. I respect that, and to that end, I'll do my best to keep questions to a minimum.
On the not too distant horizon, I'm working on SOYCD 1-5. There's a lovely Solina sound on the Fantom, which I layer with a bass pedal - other questions to follow, like how to blend voice into modulating synth in Sheep, Comfortably Numb has too many parts (horn, string, organ) to play solo on stage so what gives, yaddah yaddah.
Need to learn Sheep, Comfortably Numb, Great Gig in the Sky, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Money. If I have any success I'll post on youtube.
All the best

RE: Mr Wright's Gritty Organ Sound
I was messing around on an XV5080 trying to get his sound which was recorded as the backing track to Another Brick In The Wall Part II. The closest I got was a Rock Organ going through tremolo, chorus and rev plate effects accompanied by a VOX Chorus Aahs. This was the best I could do. Anyone know any different?
Electric Eddy.

I use a jim dunlop rotovibe pedal which is a foot controlled leslie simulator and gives keys and guitars "that " sound.
