I like the album. Compared to their previous release, The Final Cut, it's a frackin' masterpiece. Compared to say, DSOTM or WYWH....it's okay.
I think some of the songs suffer from the heavy-hand of late 80s production values [drum machines, synthesizers, layers and layers and layers of instrument tracking], but there are some gems on there that I love regardless. Learning To Fly, On The Turning Away, Signs of Life, Another Movie, Terminal Frost....they put the album solidly in the middle of the pack if you were ranking all their releases. I know that's a minority opinion, but it's how I feel.
Compared to 'The Final Cut', it's what??!!??!
'The Final Cut' isn't only the best album by Pink Floyd. It's the best album by anybody of all time. I really cannot understand this unnecessary prejudice against such a great album. Okay, at first listening, it seems slightly inaccessible, but after a good few listens, it's a masterpiece. Much in the same vein as 'Kid A' is, by Radiohead. The title track alone has me in tears:
"There's a kid who had a big hallucination........."
Enough said.

I don't think there's any "unnecessary prejudice"....It certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but that's okay. I purchased The final Cut when it was released in 1983 and found it difficult to listen to, however, Its grown on me over the years. I've always tended to lean more toward the music side of Pink Floyd moreso than the lyrical side. Two Suns in the Sunset, Fletcher Memorial Home & Gunners Dream are great songs. Even though David & Roger were on different sides of the pond when this was recorded.....it contains some of David's best guitar work.
