In between. Nick could play either and is much better than most people think.

I would pick him over any of the following:

Vinnie Colaiuta
Gavin Harrison
Mike Portnoy
Dave Weckl
Steve Gadd
Thomas Lang
Akira Jimbo
Bill Stewart

He is a much more mature and tasteful drummer/percussionist and musician then any of them.

Maybe that is a sign of how great his drumming is? It is so great it fits into the music perfectly and does not stick out. That is very rare.

Relaxed of course. Maybe "concentrated" is a better term. Mason composed a piece for each and every song and knew perfectly what he was doing.
