Its all a matter of opinion, I can easily see how you came to the conclusion of a mental breakdown. I think the worms represented the government, and the control they seem to have. Waiting for the worms to crawl into your brain meant, to me, the governmental brainwashing that was present around the time of WWII. Who knows what the hell Waters was thinking though.

The main character had a brain parasite, that's why the of the movie is all crazy, you're seeing it through his mind after the worms ate into it.

I don't think that old men ought to promote wars for young men to fight

It is one of the good movie . In these movie the main character is a brain parasite. I think the worms represented the government, and the control they seem to have. But the movie is nice to see.

Just like I think the hammers in the film represent HATE..towards the worms (goverment). But it could be anything..

I think the worms represent people in general, but mostly people with some kind of power. Government, military, etc. It kind-of makes sense if you interpret it that way, but chances are that Roger meant something completely different with them.
