I just ordered the new vinyl 30th anniversary DSOTM. I should get it tomorrow, and I'm convinced that's going to be the best sounding version in existance. That said, I'm now trying to find the best CD version I can (within limits). I have a burned copy of the new 30th remaster, but I think the PCM layer sounds worse than the standard '92 remaster. I read in several places that if you don't have an SACD player, don't bother with the new one (unless you just want to get it). I read also that the best version was the original non-remastered Harvest? cd. I just want to know how many times it's been released on cd and which one everyone thinks sounds the best (and please don't say the SACD, because I'm not going to get a player for 1 cd, and I know from testing it that it is not going to be the best version IMHO).

Yeah, it does sound good. I just think there is probably a better one out there though. I noticed that it sounded better than the new remaster. If you don't own or intend to buy an SACD player I would stick with that one.

The sound quality on the 30th CD is great, but the 20th/remaster is better. The best CD to have is the MFSL CD from the 80's and if I remember rightly, the original Harvest is not as good as any of those. The SACD layer on the 30th is better than the Stereo layer, but I personally think that something designed for Stereo is best heard in Stereo. Remember that the Quad mix of DSOTM wasn't recorded as a Quad as such, just a remix of the Stereo. Another thing to beware of on the Stereo layer of the 30th is the track markings being about 5 seconds too early.

Of course, the vinyl still can't be beaten.

That makes sense. I got the vinyl version today and it sounds amazing! The sticker on the cover says it's a 2003 Remaster. I'm thinking that they took the stereo SACD layer and pressed the vinyl from that. If anyone knows for sure I would appreciate the info.

I totally agree. I don't care about any 5.1 surround thing. I think music is supposed to be 2 high-quality channels, and that's what I search for.
