Favourite Vocalist
Who is your favourite vocalist?

I don't know how to make a poll

-Syd Barrett
-Richard Wright
-Nick Mason
-David Gilmour
-Roger Waters
1) Richard Wright
2) Syd Barrett
3) Roger Waters
4) Nick Mason
5) David Gilmour

I don't have anything against David Gilmour. He's too dull. Nick, Syd and Rick are amazing when it comes to psychedelia. Rick is amazing on all standards. Roger is very emotional and piercing.

When you started the thread, there was an option to make it a poll.

To answer your question however, David Gilmour and it's not close. While Rick, Syd, and Roger all had great voices for the songs they sang, and the emotional qualities they brought to those songs, David's voice translated better across all styles of songs they did, rather than just one type.

Actually, I disagree. David's voice is very dull, and it rarely ever changes or varies. I always need to give the songs he sings a couple of listens because his voice isn't "attractive". It always loses my attention because it's very dull.

Time, High Hopes, Sorrow, Childhood's End, The Narrow Way, Fat Old Sun, Mother, Goodbye Blue Sky, Wish You Were Here, Dogs, A Pocketful Of Stones, On An Island...it's all the same! And these are very different moments.

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I can't help but disagree. If all you've ever heard from Pink Floyd are the studio albums, official live releases, and nothing of the extensive amount of live shows they did......you don't have the full picture of any of their talents. That includes singing, instruments, the whole nine yards. They were far better live than they were on their albums, and their albums already are some of the best work I've ever heard. So that should give you an idea of just how dynamic and powerful they were on stage.

Consider this; before I acquired all my boots, I thought Roger wasn't a very good singer. It wasn't until I actually heard him sing these songs live on stage did I ever appreciate what he brought to the songs themselves, apart from what he did on the record.

I've heard a lot of bootlegs. And also, do live albums count?

Edit: In all honesty, though. David Gilmour is amazing, but in my opinion, he cannot perform alone. He needs another voice.

What bootlegs have you heard, and from what tour(s)? Live albums don't count IMO, because they're not raw. Live albums are messed with in the studio to correct bum notes, add in or take away errant bits and pieces of music.....it's not fake, but it's not 100% the full picture of what the group sounded like that night.

RE: Favourite Vocalist
I have no idea. I just surf youtube and click on videos that look as if they were played live. You might be right about me not being fully knowledgeable, but so far, other than Echoes, A Saucerful of Secrets, and Breathe, David hasn't vocally impressed me much. Perhaps you could name some shows and tours that might be interesting or special?

Most to nearly all of these you won't find on YouTube, so be warned. Also, YouTube is a poor indicator of audio quality anyway, since everything is compressed. As a note, some of the titles of these boots are ones I gave them because they were untitled. Therefore, if you want to find them, your best bet would be to Google the city/date of the show, and see what pops up if the title doesn't give you any results. These are all from my personal collection:

1969 - 1981

Complete Concertgebouw -- Concertbegouw, Amsterdam; September 17th, 1969
An Hour With Pink Floyd -- KQED Studios, San Francisco; April 29th, 1970

Meddled -- Paris Cinema, London; September 30th, 1971

For Reasons I Don't Understand -- Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland; November 6th, 1971
Embryonic Madness -- Taft Auditorium, Cincinnati, OH; November 20th, 1971 (Last performance of The Embryo -- it clocks in at 28+ minutes long)
The Heart of the Moon -- Auditorium Theater, Chicago; April 28th, 1972
Bowl de Luna -- Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles; September 22nd, 1972
Boston Music Hall -- Music Hall, Boston; March 14th, 1973
Wembley Pre FM-Master -- Wembley Empire Pool, Wembley; November 16th, 1974
Cruel But Fair -- Sports Arena, Los Angeles; April 26th, 1975

Dragged Down By The Stone -- Pavillion de Paris, Paris; February 22nd, 1977
Pigs In Tampa -- Tampa Stadium, Tampa; April 24th, 1977
Mr. Pig -- Oakland Alameda Coliseum, Oakland; May 9th, 1977

2nd Generation -- Milwaukee County Stadium, Milwaukee; September 30th, 1987
Would You Buy A Ticket To This Show -- Omni Coliseum, Atlanta; November 3rd, 1987 (Audio source of the video bootleg The Calhoun Tapes)

Very impressive. I'll try to find some. Back to the original topic.

So, pot and LF's favourite vocalist is David Gilmour. Who follows?
