Guitar riff
Hey,.Which song do you all think has your favorite (Gilmour) guitar riff ?
I know there are the obvious ones,..Time,..Comfy Numb,..Shine on/ Crazy,..& so many more.
But I'd have to say that I love the guitar work on "Sorrow" from m.l.o.r. Through out the song and last minute and a 1/2. To me it's one of Dave Gilmours best pieces of work. It's one of those songs that never gets radio play in the states,..too sophisticated.
Anyway,..your thoughts.guitar

RE: Guitar riff
I too think Sorrow is Gilmour's magnum opus, especially the one on PULSE. I always thought that he was just getting started once it started to fade out in the studio version, so it's nice to hear that he seems to pick up from around that point in the live versions. The whole song is basically Gilmour saying, "Hey, guys. Look at all of the cool stuff I can do on the guitar."

All of that rambling aside, my favorite riff is either Dogs or Childhood's End. I've always loved how it somewhat faded in.

You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in.

Your right about the studio version,..I'd love to have access to the LP master.
Dave was in the zone at the end of that song, for all we know, he went on for another
minute or so.

Some of my favs:

Hey You-I love the acoustic guitar
High Hopes- The slide solo at the end is my all time favorite- majestic!
Poles Apart- Awesome acoustic with unusual tuning
Castellorizon/On an Island (Gdansk)- Ladies & Gents, The master himself...........
Dogs- very aggresive playing for David.
Marooned- What a gem from David and Rick, 'nuff said...

RE: Guitar riff
Surely a riff is a short repeating guitar part? Like 'Young Lust', or 'Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun'?

That's what I thought too. So I'll say Shine On or Wish You Here Here.

RE: Guitar riff
My thoughts, too. Some of the songs posted here are jewels, but don't have guitar riffs. :)

My favourite is Young Lust, I think. I used to play it as soundcheck for my guitar at all my concerts, just because it was always the first song that'd come to mind when randomly having to play something. Absolutely genius riff.

RE: Guitar riff
In that case, I'll go with Comfortably Numb, Pigs (Three Different Ones) -- why do people always forget that one? -- and, well, Young Lust. Biggrin
