Grantchester Meadows and Goodbye Blue Sky
Anyone else ever think they sound almost suspiciously similar? As if the latter were a more developed version of the former, with new lyrics? I was just listening to Ummagumma after having listened to the Wall, and noticed the similarity.

I don't see a similarity, no. They both have a lot of acoustic guitar work, but that's it. Neither express the same sentiments lyrically.

Haha, yes. I did a similar post few months ago. They're a lot alike, that's true. The oooh part can be easily replaced with the guitar jig.

...our minds shot together.

The lyrics are nothing alike, but the playing, especially towards the very beginning, sounds almost exactly alike.

Roger Waters played the intro to Grantchester Meadows, David Gilmour played the acoustic guitar on Goodbye Blue Sky. Neither of them played similarly, so I don't really hear what you're hearing. They weren't really ones to repeat themselves musically, though the only true instance I can think of is the middle sections of both WTTM and High Hopes having the same guitar tacets.

Of course this is all subjective, so there's no right or wrong. I just don't hear it.

They're indeed quite similar. The key is the same for some parts, I believe. And both songs have a bass note that remains the same while the high note(s) go up and down. The "Oooooh" part of GBS and the "Hear the lark and harken to the barking of the dog fox" part of GM are almost exactly the same notes.

All of this is purely objective. Three facts I was able to come up with without even giving either song a listen beforehand. There's probably more to it, too -- all in all, a nice observation by joethulhu. :)

Very similar. Grantchester Meadows is more soothing though and not depressing. Much more calming.

Plus the birdsong in the beginning of each tune.
Grantchester, mercifully, omits Stuka divebombers in the distance.
In a corny mood, so forgive the thought of PF singing "shoo fly, shoo fly", to make Goodbye and Grantchester more similar...couldn't resist...
