RE: The Story of Wish You Were Here
It's really quite good. Much like the DSotM documentary, it goes track by track, though not in order. I felt there should have been more inclusion of Rick in the program, at least through archival interviews, but that's a minor quibble. There was a short interview with Venetta Fields, one of their backing vocalists, which I thought was nice. She wasn't someone you'd immediately think would be an interesting interview when talking about this album. Same with Ronnie Rendell, the stuntman who was set on fire for the cover. A few things:

1. Roger didn't care for Roy Harper's vocals on Have A Cigar, and thought that if he applied himself more, he could have done a better job. Which is interesting, because they showed Brian Humphries in the studio with the master tapes and at one point you hear the unreleased version with Roger and David's vocals, and when he separated out their vocal tracks, it was clear that Roy was the best of the three.

2. Aubrey Powell explained how the photo of the man "diving" into a lake with no splash was made, but I won't give that away - you'll have to watch to find out if you're curious.

3. They spent a lot of time in the studio dicking around, not really doing anything, because they were utterly uninspired after finishing the tour for DSotM. Nick Kent had written a rather scathing review of one of their shows at the Empire Pool in November of 1974, basically saying they looked bored and uninterested on stage, which David admits they were to a point. He [Nick Kent] said he didn't care for the new song they debuted, calling it "rubbish." That song was SOYCD, and he says now he overreacted a bit.

4. Roger sings Have A Cigar on acoustic guitar, and it's an interesting sight/sound to behold. Again, I'll let you watch.

5. It was nice to have new interviews with the three surviving members, rather than the same three or four that always get used, and they went a bit more in-depth (I felt) into the songs, more so than they have in the past.

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting, but I don't plan on watching it only once.

It's fantastic, you won't be disappointed. They also talked a lot about how Syd inspired the album, not just SOYCD, and they talked a bit more about the day he showed up to the studio while they were putting down the final mix for the album.

I'd love to have something like this done for Animals, personally. I don't think we know nearly enough about everything that went into that album.

Personally, Animals would be my first choice as well. I know Nick Mason has hinted that he'd like to focus on the Syd Barrett era if another is done. But who knows...

There's so much going on with the band both musically and personally during the Animals period. To the outside world its Darkside, Wish & the Wall...........Animals seems to always get overlooked.

Thanks for the review LF. Can't wait to get my hands on this. I wasn't aware that it's possible to get an item on release date by speed shipping, dang! I should read more carefully.

Animals is my next wish as well. Heck, I want all of them. Biggrin

If you watch the Bonus Features, you'll enjoy it. There's quite a bit with Nick, which is great, because I think he tends to get ignored or overlooked when it comes to projects like this; David plays and sings a bit of both WYWH and SOYCD, the latter on the Black Strat and for 66, he sounds damn good; Roger is hysterically funny. Seriously. Talks about how he doesn't mind interacting with audiences anymore and finds that if he does a gig now and sees people just sitting there listening, like their audiences used to back in the day, he wonders what's wrong with them. Laughing

Good to see the documentary is being well received.

I'm trying to add it to an order I have coming from the States, but I've I hit a bump due to region coding. You'd think that the seller would know and at first said it was Region 1, but I can't see why it would be region coded.

Can anyone who has the Blu-ray tell me if it is Region coded or is it region free?

Cheers,
WD
