How did you discover Pink Floyd?
Most of us remember the song that snagged you: bait and hook set-never to be the same.

It was "The Wall" for me. I loved the style of it, the flow, the words--even at a tender age of 12. I came home one day from school singing it because, as we have ALL had happen, it would NOT get out of my head. Later that night I was doing the dishes and started singing it again. My mother absolutely freaked out on me and started screaming that I was forbidden to listen to "that devil music."

Of course it only made me listen more, crave the soothing tones and lyrical twists that appealed to my pre-teen rebelliousness. It was not until I was in my 20's though, that I realized Pink Floyd was the all-time band for me. As I sat in my tiny apartment, rocking out for hours to Division Bell, I recalled my mother's reaction and had a really good laugh about it.

Thanks Mom! I don't think I would have 'discovered' just how awesome Pink Floyd was if it wasn't for you wiggin out on me! Cheers! rocker

RE: How did you discover Pink Floyd?
I was listening to late night radio, a somewhat local station that was known for playing some not as popular stuff late at night. Anyhow one night they played Brain Damage, this was right when DSoTM first came out. To say I was blown away was an understatement. I spent the next few years collecting everything Pink Floyd ever released (I still actually have all of the releases on vinyl, lol), eventually taking this obsession to all new levels with ROIO collecting.

RE: How did you discover Pink Floyd?
Pink Floyds music actually unfolded like a book to me. I would guess I was 11 or 12, which would be '78-79. I got a hold of a cassette with Piper on one side and SOS on the other. At the time I was unaware of Pink Floyd (no older bros or sisters). Honeslty I was into the Disco scene at the time woah

I started listening to it with friends and was immediatley sucked in. It was just completely weird stuff. I had no idea it was 10 years old at the time, but I really liked the sound of it and how long some of the songs were. Not too long after that, I was at a friends house and his sister just bought "The Wall". I remember looking at the record thinking "that's stupid". I had no idea it was even Pink Floyd. My friend was more interested in the new Prince record at the time. Anyhow, I went to the local record store and came across the Floyd section and soon purchased their records one at a time in order that they were released. So, in reality, their music really did unfold in front of me.

I won a dvd from my father, "Pulse", but the quality was too low. I discovered "Wish You Were Here" and I liked, but wasn't fan. After, I downloaded The Wall, I listened, and loved. From there, I fell in love <3

RE: How did you discover Pink Floyd?
I was seventeen when I discovered PF. It was late 1992 and MTV's Rock Block show had a PF special one Sunday evening. Since PF is not a singles band they didn't have that many promo videos to show, so instead they showed clips from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert video. The only song I recognized was "Another Brick in the Wall" - everything else was completely new to me.

I specifically remember hearing and seeing "Time" that evening. I was doing my homework, but when I heard that song I was completely stunned. I dropped everything and just stared at the TV! Nick's athmospheric drum intro, David's powerful vocals and extravagant guitar sound, Rick's sensitive vocals - I knew I loved that band before the song had ended. The next day I went to a record shop and listened to a couple of PF albums. I remember listening to Wish You Were Here and liking Shine on at first hearing. So, from there I started buying all their albums one by one.

RE: How did you discover Pink Floyd?
Hmmm....for me, it was early 1974 (I was 10 yrs old) and I was listening to WPLR late at night with the headphones on as to not disturb my older brother sleeping on the other side of the room (I couldn't sleep myself). Anyways, they were playing Money and it wasn't edited so I heard the term "bull$hit" in the lyrics and at that age I was stunned that one could curse in music. I paid close attention to get all the info I needed for the song/band/album. The next few days I cut a few lawns and rode my bike to the local Mammoth Mart and bought Dark Side, got home, put it on with headphones of course so that mom wouldn't hear the curse word(s). Little did I know or expect the stunning sound treat I was in for. Before Breath In The Air had gone 1/2 way thru, I was blown away. Stopped the album, thru in a blank 8-track tape and recorded the album. To this day, that album has been played that one time (I wore out the 8-track over the years). From that point on I was hooked and made sure I not only got every album they had already released (funny how most people, still to this day, think DSOTM was Floyd's first album), I made sure I was at the store getting any new album as they were released.

As you can figure out, I'm pushing 50 yrs old and I have never grown tired of listening to their music. There have been so many occasions where their music connected with me on a personal level as I was dealing with personal issues along the very things their songs were dealing with (at least in my mind). I started the hobby of collecting Floyd albums at that young age and to this day have a very nice collection that has caused me to add a rider to my homeowner's policy just to cover them.

But I can honestly say, not a week goes by where I haven't listened to their music, especially while stressed out from work or whatever. I get complete inner peace from their music, as strange as that might sound to some. I guess all I can say is their music has always been able to put me into my "happy place".

I've enjoyed numerous concerts of theirs (saw the Wall in 1980 @ Nassua in NY and most recently Roger's latest rendition in Seattle along with seeing Dave and Roger on their solo gigs and PF without Roger twice). I would have loved to seen an Animals show as I feel that was some of Dave's best guitar work.

Aaaahhhh the good ole days. How I wish they were all still here and actively creating music together.

What you said about connecting on a personal level with their music is so very true. Certain songs do immediately put be back to both good and bad times in my life.

Also, we're roughly the same age and I clearly remember listening to my hometown Milwaukee rock station WLPX playing the unedited version of Money. And when that part of the song came on, I would either turn it down or talking loud because my dad would've taken my radio....boy how things have changed .............

A friend of mine, who was really into new music, bought Ummagumma, in 1969. I liked the album cover but wasn't that impressed by the music, but it was constantly played so I got into it, and by the time of the release of AHM I had surrendered to the Floydian sound. Laughing

One of my teachers played Welcome to the Machine during class when I was in the 7th grade. Needless to say it hooked me for life.

Shocking. Positively shocking.

RE: How did you discover Pink Floyd?
Discovering Pink Floyd was a journey that I'll never forget or trade for anything in this world, my oldest memory of Floyd goes back to when I was 10, in my father's truck hearing and actually paying attention to the music and lyrics to Another Brick In The Wall part 2. even then I knew there was something different about what I was ingesting through this music, I remeber singing the chorus around my mother, and her telling me that was a satanist band I was singing, I remember being puzzled by the comment how could something so beautiful and full of color and depth be of the devil? That day I started down the rabbit hole and never looked back, my love for Pink Floyd was passed down to me by my Pops, we shared this bond for their music like it was our religion, I remember our endless conversations over dinner, tv, and rides in the car discussing the concepts and meanings behind the songs and album's, who our favorite members where and why, I remember when I heard Wish You Were Here, and it stopped me in my tracks, I couldn't find my Pops quick enough to talk to him about what I just heard, when I found him the look he gave me felt awesome to know his favorite song became my favorite song, all throughout my teen years a copy of DSOTM was always with me, and when I would get loose and party with my friends Pink Floyd was introduced and always floored everybody, even playing in death/tech metal bands for a long time Pink Floyd was always at the top of my playlists, May 6th, 2005 I was sitting in the ICU with my brother by my father's bedside, he was in a coma and had about 5% of coming out of it and surviving, we had made the decsion to take him off the machines, and my father passed that day, I made my way down the hallway towards the elevator, in a vacant room I heard something so familiar I didn't believe my ears, Wish You Were Here was playing on a small radio that was left behind by the previous occupant, my brother and I sat in the room until the final chords were strummed, and I knew then and there this band was such a deep part of my life and my family's life, I'm not one to put stock into things emotionally but there is a bond that was forged between my father, brother and I, through Pink Floyd's music that I am forever grateful
