Sydney Wrote:The Final Cut is very sad just because nothing has changed. I mean the whole album is about the fleeting Post-War dream, and it seems now we are living in the era of the equally fleeting post-Cold War dream.

whong Wrote:Very different albums. 'The Final Cut' is much more emotional and moving, and also more focused. What it might lack in Floydian musicality, it more than makes up for with Roger's unrestrained vision and delivery. You'd be hardpressed to find anything anywhere more raw and honest.
The above observations are well-expressed.

The personal alienation of `Pink` in The Wall, is the product of self-imposed isolation. We are saddened, but a rock-star`s self-pitying, self-indulgence can only garner so much sympathy.
No such self-indulgence on TFC. The idiocy and bloodshed of war, the failure of our leaders to learn from it, the "Not Now John" itinerary we`d rather pursue instead....all covered with unflinching honesty by Waters.

"Strung out behind us/ The banners and flags/ Of our possible pasts/ Lie in tatters and rags."

The collective regret of the above is more depressing than anything on The Wall.

Cut.

I find some of TFC difficult to get on with, but The Gunner's Dream is beautiful, and very moving.

TFC, definitely.

The whole album just has a depressing aura around it.

Nice observations, everybody. Seems that TFC is winning this particular contest easily!

Unfortunately, the sentiments of TFC seem more relevant than ever these now. "Not now John, we've gotta get on with this" indeed.

I voted for the TFC also. How can you not? Great sentiments expressed from everyone--Whong and Sydney especially. By the time I get around to posting my thoughts, someone has usually said it better (Whong!), so I usually don't bother. As the saying goes, "You took the words right out of my mouth!"

The Final Cut is way sadder.

The Wall shows the demise and rise of someone whereas the Final Cut just shows the demise. The Final Cut is something that can relate to everyone, whereas The Wall only a few, including Roger Waters. The last line of Two Suns in the Sunset sums it up - 'We were all equal in the end', still true, 23 years on. Very sad. :(

The final cut!
at the end of the wall there is a kind of redemption, but at the end of the final cut there are predictions "of the holocaust to come"...
