I feel like without the orchestra its actually a pretty decent song. They make it sound absolutely ridiculous in a not good way.

Echoes, Dogs, and SOYCD are definantly three reasons why they are #1 for me.

The orchestra sounds a bit awkward because the recording quality was terrible. The Atom Heart Mother suite is actually a great composition. There is no single mainstream rock band nowadays that would be able to compose something like that.

Use of orchestras often shows (to me, at least) that a rock band really has musical quality, and does not simply write the usual, convential music. That's one of the reasons why people like Roger Waters, George Martin, Paul McCartney and Jeff Lynne are so great. They could just write rock music, but they take things to a whole different level. I actually think that those 4 persons each have written or produced music in which not a single guitar was used, so to say. (Like Roger's opera, for instance)

It should be pointed out though, that the composition and orchestration of AHM wasn't done by the band. The suit started it's life as guitar and organ chords from David and Rick but Geesin did the rest.

Here's an interesting interview with Ron on Brain Damage.

I know this, but it wasn't "just" Ron. Pink Floyd collaborated with him in the same way Paul McCartney collaborated with George Martin on the orchestrations of Abbey Road.

(I'm getting annoyed, though. Why do I always bring up The Beatles when I need an example of something? hmm Happy )

I know. The problem is that they have no equals. Comparing is almost futile. :P
