Hi, I'm an American Sign Language interpreter and will be interpreting for Roger Waters soon. In ASL, meaning is what is signed, not words, so I need help with what some of the music means. If anyone can give me background on what songs are about, things only fans would know, anything, it would be a great help to me.
Any info on the songs from Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Perfect Sense (who is the monkey?)...I would love to hear from you.
Thanks.

As far as I am aware Wish You Were Here is a dedication to Syd Barrett (one of the founders of Pink Floyd).
Perfect Sense as far as I am aware is very political and when he talks about monkeys he is basically calling the leaders of the world monkeys. i.e. George Bush
I could be wrong though, I have been before and know doubt will be again.

I always thought the monkey was a metaphor for the "common joe" guy who enlists in the military.....apparently the Navy.

I was thinking along the same lines for Perfect Sense.
And I forget to mention Shine On You Crazy Diamond...know who he's talking about or why he uses the word diamond? Does anyone have the lyrics for On the Run and Any Colour?

In 'Perfect Sense', I always thought of monkeys as the humans. It reminds me of that movie '2001', when the monolith comes down, the monkeys touch it, and evolve and realize that they can use bones as a clubbing weapon. I'm still trying to work out the complete meaning behind Perfect Sense, but I think that's the beginning of it.

As cevor says, the initials are S.Y.D. for Syd Barrett, their gifted, but troubled former frontman.
Why diamond?...It`s not literal, but slang for wonderful, or brilliant.
diamond Noun. Wonderful, excellent. [Orig. London]
diamond geezer Noun. A really wonderful man, helpful and reliable; a gem of a man. A commonly heard extension to 'diamond'. [Mainly London use]

No. There aren`t any...instrumentals. Tough to "sign", but "OnThe Run" seems connected to the fear and danger involved with travel (hence the plane crash sound). "Any Colour You Like" I`ve always thought was an indication of the pretence of choice...political...religious...racial. Whatever allegiance you choose is irrelevant...we touch, see, hear, live, die...it doesn`t matter in the grand scheme of things.
Roger`s later solo stuff I would think is far easier to "sign", as it`s way more specific.
Icy wind of night be gone...this is not your domain

Haha, yeah. You won't find too many people asking what "The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range" is all about.

RE: lyrics/meaning - i need to know what they mean!
Wish You Were (the album as whole) is based around how Rogers Waters was feeling about Syd Barret at the time. Its main focus is about the absence that is sometimes felt between close friends over time. Like when someone changes and becomes distant until one day you realise is isn't the same person anymore, and even when they're standing in front of you, you still wish they would come back.
DSOTM is about the cruelty and harshness dealt by life itself and the toll it takes on the mind.
