That shameless butchery of the song "Echoes" is best forgotten. How the hell do you edit and clip one of the greatest epic musical pieces ever? That should be first to go! Change the name of the compilation, or better still.....just recall the whole lot of them! Angry

Get rid of Echoes altogether and replace it with "The Essential Pink Floyd," which contains only radio hits. Think about it, what is the target audience for Echoes? Casual fans don't want to pay $30 to listen to things like When the Tigers Broke Free or even Marooned. And those with a better appreciation for their music would want to buy their regular albums (where they are best enjoyed) anyway. Here's my idea of a good collection:

Disk 1:
1. Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2
2. Money
3. Learning to Fly
4. See Emily Play
5. Hey You
6. Have a Cigar
7. Young Lust
8. One of These Days
9. Time
10. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Dance Songs Version)
11. Arnold Layne
12. Mother
13. Brain Damage/Eclipse
14. Wish You Were Here
15. Comfortably Numb

Disk 2:
There is no disk 2.

Blasphemy? Maybe...but I'd buy it.
interesting, interesting, so you would have liked a very commercial pink floyd album, pity, the commercial is not the best material but what most of people, who just listen and know about music superficially like. Ok, that would get more people to pink floyd but to a pink floyd fan, an album with just radio hits without the true art isn't worthy for a collection. There are still some good tracks but you just take away too much essence.

DISC ONE
1. Astronomy Domine - definitely should be there, probably Syd's best song
2. See Emily Play - good pick, wish the Syd songs were spaced out a little though
3. The Happiest Days Of Our Lives
4. Another Brick In The Wall (pt.2) - their biggest hit, ok
5. Echoes - of course it should be there
6. Hey You - great one, but there are better songs
7. Marooned - no idea why its here
8. The Great Gig In The Sky - this and no Brain Damage?
9. Set The Controls For Heart Of The Sun - nice pick
10. Money - another good one
11. Keep Talking - ehhh..
12. Sheep - best of the Animals, ok
13. Sorrow - nothing from AMLOR should be here

DISC TWO
1. SOYCD - one of their best
2. Time - nice
3. The Fletcher Memorial Home - not a good pick
4. Comfortably Numb - their best
5. When the Tigers Broke Free - meh..
6. One Of These Days - great song : )
7. Us And Them - wouldn't put it here, rather have Breathe
8. Learning To Fly - no
9. Arnold Layne - I think another from Piper would've been better
10. Wish You Were Here - great pick
11. Jugband Blues - another great one
12. High Hopes - awesome song
13. Bike - YESSSSSSSS!

I would take out Us And Them and The Great Gig In The Sky and replace them with Breathe and Brain Damage/Eclipse.

Also, all of the Final Cut/AMLOR stuff would be taken out (since they were more or less Waters/Gilmour solo projects) and replaced with more stuff from The Wall and the early days (In The Flesh? Waiting For The Worms, the Trial, Lucifer Sam, Matilda Mother), which I think doesn't get enough attention here.

I actually put together a 2 disc Best Of Floyd thing with my iTunes and it came out like this (and yes they do fit on an 80 min CD)

Disc One
1. In The Flesh? (fades out at the end)
2. Speak To Me
3. Breathe (fades into...)
4. Astronomy Domine
5. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
6. Another Brick In The Wall (pt.1)
7. The Happiest Days Of Our Lives
8. Another Brick In The Wall (pt.2)
9. Money
10. Remember A Day
11. Time (fades before Breathe reprise)
12. Waiting For The Worms
13. Stop
14. The Trial
15. Echoes

Disc Two
1. One Of These Days (wind sound leads into..)
2. Sheep
3. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V)
4. See Emily Play
5. Lucifer Sam
6. Matilda Mother
7. Bike
8. Wish You Were Here
9. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (VI-IX)
10. Jugband Blues
11. Comfortably Numb
12. High Hopes
13. Any Colour You Like
14. Brain Damage
15. Eclipse

I got rid of my copy of Echoes since I was dissatisfied with the track listing and the order. Was "Bike" next to "High Hopes"? What the hell? As well, like the Dave Floyd live experience, no special attention is paid to the meaning of the lyrics since it's mostly the radio hits back to back. No chronological order, and no order as if the songs are interconnected and tell a complete story (unlike what Waters did with the track listing to In The Flesh: live). So I'd make Echoes a double-disc comp: the first disc spanning all the songs I like from their arty years (Dark Side to Final Cut, along with "Astronomy Domine" or something really old) and the second disc would be select picks from Division Bell and AMLOR. That disc would be called maybe, I dunno, "Dave Gilmour & Friends" or "The Post-Waters Dream". :) (Don't get me wrong, I'm starting to appreciate that period more than I used to, which is why I'm bothering to make a second disc to begin with.) Also, disc 1 would connect the songs together lyrically and tell a story. Or more than one story, but the stories relate somehow. I figure it will start in the stratosphere somewhere with a newly defined context of "Is There Anybody Out There?" and work my way from there. A person is being born with "Speak To Me/Breathe", and as he gets older he deals with the pressures of life (growing up, dealing with war, etc) and finally ending on a down note with his death in "Goodbye Cruel World".

">" indicates a segue.
* live version from Pulse of Astronomy Domine...the drums give the song more 'oomph' than the original version, even if the vocals are less inspired.

disc 1

01.Is There Anybody Out There?>
02.Astronomy Domine>*
03.Speak To Me/Breathe (fade out)
04.Goodbye Blue Sky
05.Time
06.Welcome To The Machine
07.Southampton Dock
08.Your Possible Pasts
09.One Of The Few
10.The Hero's Return>
11.Hey You
12.Comfortably Numb (somewhat out of place lyrically, but this song belongs on a best of...I just pretend the drug problem is by someone who has gone to war and not a rock star)
13.Paranoid Eyes (why do people hate this track?)
14.Run Like Hell>
15.When The Tigers Broke Free (he's reminiscing)
16.The Final Cut (didn't kill himself, didn't have the nerve)
17.Two Suns In The Sunset
18.Goodbye Cruel World (did he kill himself? die of old age? or did the nuclear holocaust kill him? YOU DECIDE! Also, this song fades in starting at the quiet bass part)

disc 2: The Post-Waters Dream (no story here - just some catchy songs!)

Actually, I'll work on the track list for this later after I've heard the albums some more.

Best of's arent suppose to tell a story, they are just the bands best songs. Some of you are the missing point. I'll come up with one....there are certain things you have to think of when putting together a best of, or a greatest hits. I think there shouldnt be more then 2 or 3 songs off each album, except for the wall, because its a double album.

I think you're missing the point if you think "best ofs" have to follow a particular guideline. These are our own personal best ofs, so they do whatever we want them to do to be a best of. We're not a label putting together a "greatest hits" package to sell albums to the masses.

maybe thats why your picks look so lame. You have to have a smart enough sense to know what works well for the general person. Many of the songs you pick the casual fan wouldnt want to hear. With a best of you attract the casual fan so they want to hear the rest of the album.
