Dark Side was one of my faves when I was first getting into the Floyd, but now that I have discovered More, Ummagumma, Obscured by Clouds... DSOTM pales in comparison.

Now I will only listen to my vinyl copy whem I am in the mood. Which is rare.

DSOTM is not overrated...it is overplayed.

I tend to agree with you. When I first started listening to Floyd I loved DSOTM but now I dont listen to it so often. I believe that Wish You Were Here is grossly overrated. It just doesnt seem like anything special to me once you take out Shine On...

100% agree on one aspect of that. I think the problem is people are confusing overrated with overplayed. Overrated implies the album is not as good as the hype or what people have said about it over the years, while overplayed implies that the saturation point for that particular piece has reached its zenith.

The album itself is not overplayed, rather the song Money is. I've never heard any other song off that album on the radio. The "classic rock" station in my area plays the song about 6-7 times a day. I think that can make people hate the album, the same as I know a lot of Eagles fans that hate Hotel California. When you hear a song enough and you're beaten over the head with it, you can begin to hate the album its on, even if you never hear anything else off of it.

Same here, but I don't hate the overplayed songs, sometimes I simply need to not listen to them for a while.

I definitley agree with giving songs a break for a awhile. I listen to AHM a lot and even that can get repetitive after a few listens. I go in phases with music. Sometimes I'll put the Floyd down for a little bit and delve into something I haven't heard for a while like some Leo Kottke or Rush or Slayer(just to name a few)

Then when I go back to the Floyd it's like hearing it for the first time, somewhat! For example Money, If you want an overplayed song, that's it! But i just listened to a live boot recording from 1972 and it is so funky and brilliant I can't believe it!

Piper at the gates of dawn is so overrated.. I hear ppl saying it's an amazing album and it's not that at all

There's a couple songs on the album I like, but on the whole....it's not in my Top 5. I don't know if that means it's overrated, though. I do believe that it's iconic in Pink Floyd history and definitely a hallmark of that sound, but....I don't know.

The Wall is much more overplayed than Dark Side, in my opinion.

DSOTM is one of the few albums I could listen to over and over continuously. Sometimes I think I'm insane collecting every bootleg with a DSOTM + Echoes setlist, but I realize it's because these recordings are some of the best ever made.

Iconic because it's their first album blablabla ETC.. But song-wise it's really really not something someone should say is the best thing they've ever heard because they would be lying to everyone and to themselves..
