You know, there's a reason that this record never made it into my Floyd collection... apart from having all their original material already, and aside from the fact that I hate greatest hits by favorite bands, the track list deviates so far from the theme that I sometimes wonder if it was meant to be some kind of joke. All those songs are great, but none of them actually prompt you to dance... there's only one Floyd album that you can plausibly groove to, and that is The Piper at the Gates of Dawn simply for its psychedelic properties. If you can dance to A Collection of Great Dance Songs you're either an absolute thug, or really fuc-king offbeat... either way I'd give you mad props.

So tell me, how many floydians out there actually get down on this compilation?

And who's the fool who wears the crown?

I don't own the album, and my impression is that the title is purposely a joke.

I might buy the album one day just for the sake of having it. (And also to look through the booklet, see the album artwork, etc.) From what I've heard, the version of "Money" on the album was a new re-recording of the song, with all intstruments on the track played by David Gilmour, except for the saxophone. (Although he's learned the sax in recent years for "Red Sky At Night" on "On An Island", so he could very well play every instrument on "Money" now)

The title "A Collection Of Great Dance Songs" was a tongue-in-cheek joke by Dave, who compiled it with Nick. Roger wanted nothing to do with it.
If you look at the artwork, you'll see that the dancing couple are actually tied down by ropes, and therefore, cannot dance.

Dave and Nick re-recorded "Money" simply because one lyric had to be changed from "First class travelling set" to "... travelling section".

Also, "ABITW2" is a mix of the single and album versions, Shine On is basically the same as the '94 live version.

BTW, I own it :;):

Yeah we practically chose to buy that album way back when simply because of the amusing title and the thought of Pink Floyd's music played so that others may dance.
And the other reasons were because of the different mix to the songs and because it was freakin' Floyd. Any little biscuit to tide us over until we got a copy of The Final Cut.

I've always really liked the cover art.....probably the best of any Floyd compilation, with the possible exception of 'Relics'.....

The only other reason I purchased it, was for the re-do of 'Money'. I remember liking it at the time, because it was different........but not nearly so much now.

I think the Echoes cover is better than the other compilations. Especially Works which has rubbish artwork.

The Echoes cover is the best of the compilations in my opinion.

With Relics as a very close second.

Well, it isn't really an official Floyd release, the record company just threw it out to win the fans - most bought it for the Embryo demo.

Echoes has the best artwork, of course, followed by ACoGDS, then Shine on at third, with Relics coming in fourth, and Works falling behind.

I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing

I forgot about 'Echoes' actually. It can be fun to look at, in order to pick out all those album references I guess. As a compilation, I think it's piss poor though....sorry I ever bought it....:(
