Just curious if The Final Cut was the first Pink Floyd record that you listened to.

No it isn't. Without a doubt it is the most raw, powerful and full of purpose album they made.

The reason I asked is because I find that most people that site TFC as their favorite usually state that it was also the first Pink Floyd record that really introduced them to their music.

Powerful- yes it is.
Full of purpose- well, that's subjective. I guess from Roger's point of view it is. Obviously it does deal with real issues which touch people in different ways. For me, Wish you Were Here is the record that is full of purpose.

I agree that it's powerful, although I don't care for it. It's too heavy-handed. Same with Animals, but in that album's case, there was still the Gilmour influence in the music, and it saved it from being too preachy. Without David's counterbalance, The Final Cut sank under the weight of its own ego.

You could also say the reverse was true with AMLoR. Without Roger's counterbalance lyrically, the album is a bit too light.

The Wall
Wish You Were Here
Dark Side Of The Moon
Meddle
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn

I actually listen mostly to their post-Syd/per-Dark Side material the most of late. I just think the albums from 68-70, though having great material, lacked coherence and songs. When you consider the epic qualitative jump from Saucerful to Dark Side, you'd be forgiven for thinking that someone sold their soul to make those works! And after all, they're only ordinary men...

There is a lot of good music '68-70. They were trying to find themselves for sure, or Noodling around as David Gilmour once stated. Meddle and Obscured by Clouds really are the result of those years.....ideas they liked and didn't like. Zabriskie Point (1969) is important as well. Some of that work found its way to Dark side.

Give Obscured by Clouds a good listen if you haven't already. Although just a collection of songs.......its really good.

OBC is great! Great moods, and it really conjures summer for me. Good stuff. Wot's...Uh The Deal ? is my favorite on that LP...

You can hear a lot of ideas in the 68-70 period that were developed into ideas for Dark Side. Heart Beat Pig Meat feels like a precursor to Speak To Me, Unknown Song and A Pillow Of Winds pave the way for Brain Damage, Violent Sequence lays the ground for Us And Them, Funky Dung, part of Atom Heart Mother, feels like an early Any Colour You Like, and if you get a chance, the live improv PF did for the moon landing in July 1969, entitled Moonhead, has a bit that sounds a whole lot like Money...so, I hear what you're saying!

the wall as numbero uno is interesting,i know pink floyds songs can be interpetted differently and appeals to us all on different levels but i feel that album as good as some of the songs are (nobody home, comfortably numb, one of my turns, mother)lacks the sense of a band pulling in the same direction. Also what shall we do now did not make it on another great tune.My favourite albums at this moment are:1-dark side of the moon
2-wish you were here
3-meddle
4-atom heart mother
5-the wall
6-animals
7-the final cut
8-a saucerful of secrets
9-obscured by clouds
10-the division bell

RE: Album Rankings - How do you rank Floyd?
I used to lurk around on this site a lot years ago, not sure iff I ever had a username but since I do now figured I would start with one of these...

1. Wish you were here- I love this one because it's got the same classic feel and production that Dark Side has but it hasn't been played out as much.
2.Meddle- Echoes and A pillow of winds are two of my favorite songs by anyone ever. There's nothing wrong with the rest of it either. Cool cover too.
3. Dark Side of the Moon- This is what got me into them almost 10 years ago when I came across a scratchy vinyl copy of it while in high school. It's perfect all the way through and could be number one but I've heard it so much it's lost a bit of what makes it special.
4.Atom Heart Mother- This one is pretty weird but it's grown on me a lot over the years. It reminds me a lot of sunny mornings and spring time. The suite is pretty experimental but I'm into it, the short solo tracks are all great and I've actually grown to love Alan's psychedelic breakfast. A fun and relaxing track.
5. Animals - I love the anger and the guitarwork.
6. Obscured by Clouds- This is like a version of Dark side of the moon that doesn't take itself so seriously.
7. Saucerful of Secrets- I'm not a huge fan of the long title track, not this version anyway. I dig all of the short songs though, especially Rick's. One of their most psychedelic.
8. Piper at the gates of dawn- I do enjoy this album and Syd's whole style but I have to be in the right mood for it. Sometimes it would be higher.
9. The Wall- I am definitely more of a Gilmour fan but I do think this album is a classic in it's own way. It's a little bloated and works better in the context of the movie which I like a lot. Comfortably numb and Goodbye blue sky are favorites.
10. More- This is a great little understated record. A lot of good songs but some filler. Understandable considering it was a soundtrack.
11. Division Bell- I do love High Hopes , wearing the inside out and the instrumentals. However there are some songs I just don't like at all like Take it back. I really do like this album but I'd like it better 15 minutes shorter.
13. Momentary Lapse of Reason- I hate the production and I'm not crazy about all of the songs either.

This could change a bit from time to time. I didn't mention the Final Cut since my vinyl copy skips and I havn't heard it in years. I plan on buying a cd of it but I've been preoccupied with black metal and ambient music lately.
