I understand American made guitars are so much cheaper over there than in UK. Could still get genuine California made Strat/Tele and change from $500, I'm pretty sure. However, need to consider pickup, effects, amp situation very carefully as well as just getting a Strat if you want to REALLY get Gilmour sound. Also you need to learn to play like him.

Pickups are going to be expensive I have heard. What kind of pickups and what type of amp would you recommend for me to get? I will be getting an American Strat.

Wowser the other moderator will probably know exactly which pickups to get. I really don't have a clue which amps Gilmour used, sorry.

don'y bother messing around with fitting different pickups - especially as they can cost the same as a new amp
This page is quite useful for seeing david's gear, and it is a versatile setup, so if your style veers away from pink floyd, u still have a good versatile tone. Buying second hand would be a good option i think.

you can get a good little tube amp from laney, like the

LC15R (browse to valve amps, then lc14r) won't annoy your parents too much, either. reviews are here

look to getting a compression pedal at some stage, too, like the
M-102 DYNA COMP

I will definitely check it out. I have a lot of browsing to do. I want to get some EMG-SA pickups on the guitar, hopefully the price won't be too high. Are the LC15R and M-102 DYNA COMP the amp and pedal you recommend to use with a American Reissue Stratocaster?

they should be used with any setup u use. This all sounds like it'll rocket off budget, though - the reissue strat alone will be around 800 bucks.

I went to Guitar Center to look at the Strats. They had quite a few, but I don't understand whats the difference. They all look the same, except one is 500, and ones 700, and even 900. All of them had numbers like X303 or something. What's the difference between an X303 and X305 or whatever. I look at the very top and they had one that had a year on it, it said 62. I am guessing this is a reissue strat. I think that is what I need to be getting. I just want to know what's the diffence number wise and price wise.
Thanks.
