getting better - playing guitar

i',m using an SM57 myself. It seems fine over the thweth fret, but not quite as loud as i would like it, before i get too much noise from the preamp

The SM57 is a great mic that is what I use to mic my cab when I record but the SM57 Beta is diferent. The regular SM57 will not work nearly as good. The main difference is the Beta is a condenser mic the regular is not. The SM57 beta will be a lot louder to.

Other mics of this type you might want to look into are:
AKG C1000S (This is the one I want)
Audio-Technica 853a (Overhead Room Mic)
MXL 993 Pencil Condenor Mic
There is another good one by Shure but I don't know what its called and I can't find it in my Musicians Friend catalog.

Here's something that might help too. When I need to bost a signal I plug in my compressor into "insert" section of my mixer. Since there is an output level on the compressor it lets me bost the signal before it hits the preamp.

Interesting. I could always trade around on ebay to get the Beta, without paying much price difference. oh, i got rid of my compression pedal
